Sometimes, it’s not so easy to tell the differences between good guys and the bad ones. Filled with superheroes, supervillains, and epic showdowns, The Unforgettable Logan Foster and the Shadow of Doubt is the thrilling second book in the acclaimed Logan Foster series from super-author Shawn Peters.
After using his photographic memory to defeat Necros and her minions, Logan has seen his life change completely. Now, the Multinational Authority for Superhuman Control (MASC) is keeping a close eye on everything he does in order to keep him out of Necros’s clutches.
But when Logan stumbles upon the fact that Necros was in the area on the very same day he became an orphan, he can’t help but wonder—is MASC hiding the truth about who his parents really are
When superheroes mysteriously start going missing, all signs point to the same supervillain who also may hold the clues to Logan’s past. Only Logan—along with his super-strong best friend, Elena, and their new bestie, Connie—can uncover the truth, find the missing superheroes, and stop Necros. Will Logan be able to save the day and uncover the truth about his birth parents before it’s too late It’s another action-packed Logan Foster adventure from super-author Shawn Peters.
This sequel is much more intense than the first one and older MG readers will be on the edge of their seats with the heightened excitement of the action scenes. Along with several epic superhero battles, there are dad-jokes and groan-worthy puns galore, some subtle and some worthy of a laugh-out-loud. Logan has some very tough decisions to make and the twists will keep you turning the pages. The characters are well developed, especially Logan, and I hope to read more about them in the next book of this series. I want to know what happens next!
A superhero adventure epic that could go toe-to-toe with any DC or Marvel series!
Trigger warning: No bad language is stated directly, but allusions to those words is mentioned several times. Also, Colonel Gdula is always seen with a cigar, and celebrates with one at the end.
There is never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, and Logan Foster—now Logan Lewis—knows that fact better than most. Three weeks after the epic conflict that launched Logan into a super-secret, superhero world, he and his foster parents are living with new identities on a houseboat in Marina Del Rey. But superheroes are mysteriously disappearing all around the globe, and the evil Necros is purported to be involved. As the disappearances are being investigated, Logan is simultaneously discovering information that may lead him to the family he cannot remember. Together with trusted friends and loved ones, Logan combines his eidetic memory with bravery and strength to help reveal the truth of his past.
This second in the Logan Foster series takes a marked step up in both emotional intensity and maturity. Though he is young, Logan’s powerful memory lands him as a freshman in high school, so he is now encountering students who use strong language and discuss more mature subject matter than in the first book. Strong language is tempered by Logan’s intentional editing for the sake of his younger sibling—to whom he is still writing this book—but readers will nonetheless sense the heightened emotions felt by the characters in Logan’s immediate vicinity. Logan’s personality, however, continues to emanate from the narrative in much the same way as in the first book, and this helps readers settle easily into this novel.
Logan is a unique character in middle grade literature, and this book begins to transition readers from the comfort of traditional middle grade stories to the upheaval that often appears in novels for older readers. Though Logan usually struggles to name and manage his own emotions, he is faced with so many in this story that he has no choice but to meet them head on. Luckily, Logan’s companions are endlessly supportive and help him to navigate his complex feelings in a positive way. From dynamics with family and friends to the ever present conflict between good and evil, there are several layers to this story that will keep the pages turning. This is a strong addition to the Logan Foster series, and it is a captivating story that will resonate with readers long after it ends.
I received a copy of this book from the author and I chose to leave this review.
Just finished the first sequel of 2023, THE UNFORGETTABLE LOGAN FOSTER AND THE SHADOW OF DOUBT which is absolutely everything a sequel should be!!! Building upon the original characters and plot, introducing new characters that scaffold into an incredible building crescendo of excitement with the highest superhero flair and Logan’s incredibly true voice. I adored the way the story evolved, and while it ends perfectly, I hope there are more adventures with Logan and his incredibly super family and friends! There is not a better MG book. That is a fact!!
Logan’s second adventure is even more fun, emotional and epic than the first! It’s great seeing the protagonist grow and develop in the world of superheroes, despite how strange it must still be Logan takes it all in his stride. It’s also fantastic to witness Logan and Elena mature the way kids do, even if they have super powers! Gil and Margie begin to acclimatise to the human world as well, endearingly so!
The sequel has Logan juggling the struggles of fitting in and the awesome superhero battles between the gang and Necros, what more could you want?!
This series is a treasure- funny, wise, warm and so welcoming! I hope we get many many more adventures if Logan Foster, and I will be here for all of them!
I already guessed one of the plot twists, but I still enjoyed this. Also, I love that they mentioned the fact that Logan can still feel empathy even though he’s neurodivergent. I know a lot of neurotypical people have trouble believing that, but it’s true. In fact, sometimes I feel like neurodivergent people can be more empathetic BECAUSE were neurodivergent. Not to mention that it’s just super awesome that his brain is like his superpower.
Even better than the first, this sequel builds on the great world and creative superheroes of the first book, but with more action and emotional punch! Perfect for kids and adults alike, Logan’s second outing takes him farther afield in an attempt to find his family and help friends in need. Filled with great action sequences and puns alike, what makes Logan’s story truly stand out is its heart. I laughed and cried my way through this incredibly fun adventure, and that is a fact without a shadow of doubt.
Please write a 3rd book! My boys (8 and 11 years old) and I need to know what happens next! We talk about your stories all the time around the dinner table. We love the action-packed, suspenseful, fun, and surprising stories. And, as a parent, I thank you for the seamless way in which you weave in gender- and neuro-diversity! You should definitely write another book- we are eagerly awaiting it, “and that is a fact!”
Logan is meeting new friends and trying to find answers to his questions about his birth parents-but people are not always who they seem to be! This action-packed superhero encounter will change lives forever! You must read this sequel in order to see who triumphs and who misses the win in life and battle!
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I’m so glad I did! I can’t wait to introduce Logan Foster to my 5th graders. Every character is interesting and endearing and there are no dull moments. Love the positive messaging without being cheesy.
This is one of the best books I've ever read. It was so engaging and had such good chapter endings that you really could never stop. I imagine if this was a readaloud in a late elementary/early middle school that kids would never want the readaloud to end. I cannot believe that there is not already a book deal for Logan Foster #3. This book deserves all the sequels. It wrapped everything up really well as if there never would be a book 3 but amazingly still left things open that could become a book 3.
Logan is a liability ever since it got out that he has the list of all the superpowered humans in the world in his head. Necros seems to be hunting down the supers she got from him when he was forced to divulge names to get his foster parents freed. Those supers are disappearing at an alarming rate, and MASC leaders are afraid Necros will soon come after Logan for more. But they have no idea where Necros is at the moment. Margie and Gil are refusing to let MASC wipe Logan's memory, but how long can they hold out? Logan is also trying to figure out who his real parents are, and though Margie and Gil want to adopt him he's not sure if he's ready for that. New teen from Logan's school, Connie, is identified as a super and welcomed to MASC for training. She also has a missing parent and is unhappy that MASC isn't doing anything to help find her mom so she recruits Logan and Elena to help. But their trip reveals that some of the supers aren't missing, they've decided MASC is domineering and not helping supers. Who can they trust?
This wasn't quite as fun as the first one, but then again the first one was a LOT of fun so it would be hard to match. A certain secret was pretty obvious to me and I found it surprising that Logan was so slow to catch on. It felt so glaring, but I guess he was distracted by other things. So that was not a point in the book's favor. I did like the development in his relationship with Margie and Gil, and there were definitely fun moments along the way. Peters has a talent for writing with a bit of wry humor in Logan's very black and white view. It takes such talent to write a very smart and straightforward character as likable instead of annoying, but Peters pulls it off. Due to some of the serious nature of the superhero battles and other content, I'd only recommend this to upper middle graders who can handle it.
Notes on content: 3 minor swears stated, and Logan often says a substitute word for what Connie really says and then says something like 'but she didn't say flip' so readers can easily guess what she really did say. No sexual content. There's two crushes going on in the story, Elena has one on Connie, and a girl has one on a boy. Elena also mentions kissing a boy at summer camp. There are some battles which do result in fatalities and injuries. There's a school bus accident that endangers a lot of high schoolers and results in some injuries.
Once again the ending surprised me. And yet, that's where I thought it would go. I really liked reading this series because there were very few swears and only one weird crush between two girls that didn't work out in the end. Wish that wasn't included, but that's how books come these days.
The illustrations again helped me picture the story better and have a better grasp of what the characters looked like. I really liked the art style and think it goes nicely with the cover art.
The action scenes were written well and I could picture what was going on about 96% of the time.
I'm glad Logan's story came to a good ending. It felt resolved this time and I didn't have any missing pieces or questions.
I don't really know why, but I liked having the random facts at the beginning of chapters. I enjoyed having Logan state his mind and lean towards truth and facts rather than lying to his foster parents and making a mess of things. Logan is a good example for the youth of this generation.
4 stars for Shawn! Excellent work.
**SPOILER ALERT** I thought Connie having a crush on Logan was weird and didn't think the kiss was needed to tell the story. I thought it was an interesting dynamic when they were friends but then it got weird.
You would think that after saving the world with his friend Elena, Logan would get some time to just be a kid. But nope. Not only does he and his foster parents, super heroes Gil and Maggie, have to relocate, the sinister forces of Necros continue to follow him. And on top of staying alive, he has big questions to answer: What is hidden in his brain?; Who can he trust?: and biggest of all - Is Necros his mother?! The plot is fairly formulaic, but it's good to see characters who have physical or emotional differences be the center of the story. Having said that, Logan's repeated phrase "fact" gets annoying after the first few chapters and Gils puns start to feel forces real quick. Also, this is another book where the adult author uses a children's story to push some social views and agendas, which is really getting old. I like the days when people just wrote a good story and wrote it well. Overall this book is okay, though forgettable and not as strong as the first, but some students might enjoy it.
I loved this book even more than the first in what I hope will be a series. This second book is more intense than the first and at times the twists and suspense made me want to pace and definitely made me stay up reading. This action-packed plot made for a fun ride and Logan is one of my all time favorite POV characters now. Logan is intelligent, loving, and loyal and so much more. I loved his found family and best friend Elena too as each one is so well fleshed out and seemed to come to life for me on the pages.
This book made me laugh out loud often and not just at the Dad jokes and puns. Logan's view of the world and his complete honesty made for both laughable moments and all the emotions too. The story ended with some answered questions, but also left plenty of unknowns that I need another book and more time with Logan.
How's this for a superpower? Writing a sequel to an already awesome superhero story that manages to top the original. That's exactly what Peters pulls off here with the continuation of Logan Foster's story where Logan chases down clues to who his real mother is while himself being chased by a powerful villain who wants the info in Logan's brain to hunt down all the world's supers. Logan's not your neurotypical action hero. In fact, he doesn't have any powers at all. But he's earnest, trustworthy, and the kind of friend you can rely on to the end. Along his journey, I guffawed, I got choked up, and I cheered out loud as the story rushed along to an epic, explosive conclusion.
This is what I wrote about the first book, and it's exactly the way I feel about this one:
"Readable and enjoyable. I think it's one of those books where, if you think you'd like it based on the premise, it will not disappoint. If I'd read this when I was the target age, I'd undoubtedly have rated it higher."
One thing that bothers me: reading this made me feel like a sequel was planned, scratched, and the end unsatisfactorily rewritten to "finish" the duology.
First book was a pretty great book, high side of average in my enjoyment. Lighthearted and unique, and the wokest things got was a couple of feminist comments and some token minority.
Now Elena is apparently LGBTQ. Which is sad—she's a good character with an interesting personality. I was willing to look past her ridiculous minority-point score but this tips the scale. I dislike being told sin should be celebrated more than I enjoy Logan and his superhero world.
So disappointed in this sequel! I LOVED the first book and was so excited to read book two. The illustrations are fantastic! I love Logan, especially him being a neurodivergent main character. His narration is spot on. I am also autistic and write books with neurodivergent characters. My disappointment with this book is in the themes. Not for a middle grade audience. The book seemed more appropriate for upper high schoolers with adult themes and issues. I’m so bummed.
I just really enjoy this series. I like that there are two sets of great parents, there are some good action scenes, and it's both funny and heartfelt. I can't wait to booktalk it to classes, because I know they're going to eat it up.
Also, Gilmore's Game Grotto, I see what you did there, Mr. Peters, you Critter you.
All the humor, heart, and superhero action of the original, with exactly the kind of world expansion, character growth, and unexpected twists you want from a sequel. The unmistakable (unforgettable?) voice pulled me in right off the bat, and the tight, fast-moving plot kept me turning pages until the end.
An excellent series continues!! I was able to figure a few things out early in the book, but it was still exciting. I really enjoy a book with a strong (super) family theme and this one has it, as did the first one. I can’t wait for the next one! I hope Elena’s dad jumps in to the mix next!
This story was better than the first one, had much more adventure, danger, and battles. There was a further developing of backstory and character exploration and all together a lot more fun. The next book should be quite a story.
In the second book of the series, Logan and his foster parents have new identities and a new home. Logan is going to a new school, and everyone is dealing with the fallout of the confrontation with Necros. Tons of humor and adventure in this series.
