giggling and kicking my feet in the air right now, this book is making me so happy it's embarassing 😭

this is the sweetest manga i've read in a long time, matter of fact this is so sweet that it gave me diabetes and i honestly don't think i'll be able to wait much longer to get the next book (Kodansha Comics pretty please, if you see this i'm begging you to give me the ARC of the second book, i've been a really good girl this year <3 )

now enough of me fangirling, let's get into the nitty-gritty : this book follows Ichiro Kuga, a young manga artist who lost his father and is left with his two younger siblings and unfortunately a very small inheritence.
[disclaimer : this book isn't centered around grief at all so if you have trouble with that topic, don't worry it's barely discussed and this is a really light-hearted book ! ]

instead of looking for another job to make a living, he decides to continue his job as manga artist since his first book sold pretty well and he got enough recognition to make it his main source of income ( talk about a #boyboss 😌 ) but the deadline is approaching and with no one to help, it seems almost impossible to complete everything in time ...

and here comes my wifey, Shiori Goshiki, the love of my life and the sweetest angel the earth had the privelege to welcome <3
she's an extremely talented assistant, even though it's the first time she has ever done that job, she's gifted, she's sweet and she's absolutely gorgeous to top it all off but ... she seems a bit strange at times like she doesn't really belong or almost like she doesn't even come from earth ...
now you have to read the book to figure out why !! ( don't throw tomatoes at me please i love you )

the art is absolutely amazing, it's flowing really well, the plot is a little excentric but that's super refreshing and fun and the characters are my little babies i love them so much and the way they're written don't make them feel one dimensional at all !
i would absolutely recommend it and i'll 100% be reading the next books !!

Thank you so much to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for this ARC

So the art was good and the story was alright and all, but I wasn’t feeling the romance. Like not even an ounce of it. I liked our two main characters, but everything just seemed so formal and kind of stiff. Awkward might be a better word for it.

I’m sorry to say I don’t really recommend this one. It was okay, but not enough for me to tell people to read it.

Thanks so much to NetGalley, Kondasha, and Gido Amagakure for the opportunity to read this book for my honest and unbiased opinion.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this up from the library, but the cover looked interesting so I decided to go with it. A Galaxy Next Door follows a manga creator after his father passes. He's left taking care of his younger siblings. In order to provide for them, he rents out parts of their house and creates manga. As readers begin the manga, they realize that he's struggling after his previous assistants have left to pursue their own careers. Enter Shiori who quickly becomes his assistant only for Ichiro to find out that she may or may not be an alien. This was cute and has a romantic/slice of life feel to it. I really enjoyed learning about Shiori's background. Of course, there are some awkward moments, but that's because Shiori and Ichiro come from different planets. There were a lot of heart-warming moments as well and I'm extremely excited to see where their relationship goes. I've already placed the second volume on hold at my local library. I definitely recommend giving this one a try.

Ichiro has been taking care of his little brother and sister since their father passed away, supporting them through his serialized manga and the income he earns from renting out rooms in their home. Goshiki is a young girl who's lived quite a sheltered life and is finally stretching her wings and pursuing her dream of working in the manga industry. She applies to become Ichiro's assistant and everything is going swimmingly the first day until Ichiro grabs what he thinks to be a pen that is coming perilously close to stabbing his new assistant, unfortunately for him, it's her stinger! Through a weird series of occurrences, Goshiki is host to an organism that makes it so whoever touches her stinger becomes her betrothed! If that wasn't awkward enough just being away from Goshiki makes Ichiro sick! Ichiro quickly realizes he's gotten way more than he bargained for with his new assistant especially since he's not only engaged to be married to her but he's pretty sure that he's got a crush on his fiance!

I thoroughly enjoy any book, manga or novel, that has characters that admit their feelings right away. The whole hidden love is fun and it makes for a great way to build tension but I think it can lead to a very unrealistic evolution of a relationship. It's refreshing to see a series start off with two characters admitting their feelings for each other! I also enjoyed that Goshiki is a sheltered young adult. I think her naivete about the world I believe will allow for the same tension that you find in rom-com with characters who haven't expressed their emotions but instead of it surrounding that very specific dance, the author can have it surround the characters growing together. Or at least I hope that's the plan. It's volume one so I'm totally projecting what I'd like to see however this ends up progressing this first volume was well-written so I have faith that it will be great! And yes on a personal level since I met my husband when we were in our teens it is always nice to have a series start out with people working on a relationship not working towards being in a relationship. It's a completely different dynamic and one I can relate to.

The characters in this were very likable as well, Ichiro especially is a prime example of someone doing the best they can in a tough situation. He also has a great support group with his siblings and friends which is nice to see. He doesn't like asking for help which is completely relatable but his support group knows when they are needed and aren't pushy about it. It's very realistic. Goshiki is of course adorable in her sheltered kid way. And I found it to be refreshing, again, that even though she's sheltered she knows exactly what she wants out of life. Fumio and Machi are too cute as well! Machi is the perfect little mother character and while I enjoy that I also enjoy that Ichiro lets her be a kid too.

The art in this was beautiful as well, the fact that the author is doing everything (well almost everything) by hand instead of digitally is points in my book. Don't get me wrong digital art is just as beautiful but being the daughter of and the mother of artists it's always nice to see people still making art the "old fashioned" way.

Overall, I'm looking forward to seeing how Ichiro and Goshiki's relationship evolves regardless of the course it takes! Highly recommend for fans of Dress Up Darling, Goshiki even looks a bit like Marin.

I got this one for the cover (and OK for the blurb as well), but yeah, I won't be continuing reading this one. I was just mostly bored, didn't know if I really had to take that princess/stinger thing seriously (I know, there was enough proof that apparently it is real, but I just couldn't believe that) plus given that it is such a big deal why didn't she hide it better/why didn't she tell him about it so he would know what was going on (then again I guess you would have even less plot then), the princess was your stereotype of oblivious/not very smart/never gotten to see the outside girl which is fun when done well, but in this case I just wasn't a fan of her.
I did love the art though. That was great.

First, my gratitude to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an advanced reading copy of this series in exchange for an honest review.

After Ichiro's parents died, he has been the one to take care of his younger brother and sister. By doing so, he became a serialized manga artist for a living and decided to drop out of high school. Goshiki, in turn, is a princess from another galaxy who wanted to meet him as she was a fan of his works for a while now. She was hired as his temporary assistant to meet his deadline. After an exhausting day of working, as Goshiki lay flat on the floor, her employer Ichiro, was pricked on her tail, thinking it was a manga pen sticking on her behind. Little did Ichiro know that there is a weird tradition lying behind touching a tail of Goshiki's kind. Soon after, Ichiro was hailed as the lady's fiance. Much to the guy's surprise, he starts to open his world to feelings unbeknownst to him before; as strange as the lady's existence, yet familiar as her breathing.

Goshiki in a stunning black dress and umbrella reminds me of Mary Poppins! The art is beautiful and the opening is quite interesting, although, I may have held back a couple of days before finishing it; there are just a few scenes that are boring me out. Nevertheless, the premise is refreshing. Overall, I'll give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. It just failed to hook me.

After losing both parents, Kuga makes ends meet for his younger siblings, Machi and Fumino, by making manga. His beautiful new assistant Goshiki seems too good to be true, or perhaps out-of-this-world might be a better turn of phrase. Whatever the case, one awkward penetration might have them closer than either expects.

Mash together the ‘save the guy’s hash and befriend the kids’ stylings of Mary Poppins (Goshiki literally appears holding an umbrella) with the otherworldly nature of Fly Me to the Moon, although this is entirely more explicit about Goshiki’s origins, and you’ve got the general flow of this, but it gets so much weirder as it goes on.

At first, Goshiki literally seems like a manic pixie dream girl, a wise and skilled talent who will appear and solve all of Kuga’s problems. But after one brutal all-nighter, she turns out to have a stinger, of all things, and when Kuga is accidentally jabbed with it, he’s basically agreed to marry her in her culture.

That’s one heck of a curveball to throw and it definitely changes the flavour of this story, deliberately so. Kuga writes shojo manga and the author is having a field day both commenting on the tropes of the genre while also using them to their own ends. While not perfectly executed, it’s certainly not lacking in originality and that does raise it in my estimation.

The way the obvious childhood friend/rival gets utterly upended almost immediately, but also contributes to the narrative? Absolutely smart. There is a very pointed mention of how formulaic these romances tend to be, but Goshiki is also trying to figure out what she thinks is romantic, so cue the hair stroking and wall slams anyway (that wall slam is great).

If you didn’t know this was from the mangaka behind Sweetness & Lightning, you might very well figure it out from the kids, especially Machi, who is a little bit of a scene-stealer once she gets going. Fumino has far less to do, but the series is only young. They bring an extra bit of heart to the narrative and the family dynamic is really sweet.

The only thing about this right now is that it might be a little too weird and too obvious in its attempts to thwart tropes or twist them around. Goshiki having a stinger probably should be a little more of thing, the explanation for this is kind of a word salad, and the weird impact that has on Kuga is used to decent effect but IS really out there. It’s telling that a lot of these first chapters reiterate the premise in the opening pages as part of the dialogue.

And doing it differently or not, a wall slam is a wall slam is a wall slam. To be fair, this premise is going out of its way to present these staples in a new light, but it’s still the same stuff with a different seasoning. I can see it not being enough for some, though I’d be lying if I said this whole thing wasn’t enchanting.

In fact, the Goshiki and Kuga relationship goes through some real turns even in this first volume and her naïveté plus his familial devotion and lack of confidence makes for an interesting match, especially when they become more than those mere traits.

For all the strangeness and cliche, this still knows how to be a fine story and that blend of humour, real emotional heft, and an appealing cast is more than enough to warrant a continued look. It’s a very strong start.

4 stars - if I had the chance to re-read this, I could see this hitting a higher rating even, but even as it stands it is unquestionably a very good, very bizarre, story that’s as strange as it is intriguing. It’s certainly never boring and that’s worth a lot in my estimation, whatever it winds up as going forward.

Thanks to Kodansha and Netgalley for the eARC.

4.5 Stars

Wild and sweet are the perfect description for this romantic comedy. From the start, the premise was so intriguing and compelling and it only became gradually wild bonkers from there but in a good way and it is for sure not the weirdest setup I've read from a manga.

A Galaxy Next Door is about a Shoujo author named Ichiro Kuga who has taken up the role of sole guardian for his two young siblings after the passing of their beloved father. With stressful deadlines, growing responsibilities, and everything else, he is near his breaking point. Enter this beautiful and mysterious girl named Shiori Goshiki who applies to be his new assistant but turns out to be a mystical star princess trying to find her own way.

So far this has been a light, fluffy, and incredible wholesome story. The relationship between Ichiro and his younger siblings is heartwarming to read. They all have wonderfully different personalities but mesh so well together. (The humor and sass of his siblings are so entertaining to read.) The romance part was adorable too. As much as I do love a slow-burn romance, it was refreshing to read about characters who are aware of their feelings and actually do something about it.

It also felt meta in some ways which made sense with the plot. The art style is too lovely and part of why I enjoyed this story as a whole. Volume 1 was a great introduction to this story and these colorful characters and I'm interested in learning more about this world.

If you love shoujo with a dash of fantasy, give this story a try.

3.5 rounded to 4

Ichiro is a manga artist that has recently lost his father and is caring for his two younger siblings. He desperately needs an assistant and in comes Shiori – his dream come true. For work purposes. ;)

The art in this one was really good - loved all the pictures. The relationship with the children was great and I did think the plot was a little more unique from some others I've read recently. But once this one 'took a turn' I kind of didn't love where it was going. It gave me a lot of anxiety. It is cute, and I would consider with the series sometime, but it's not at the top of my list.

Steam: none but there's some scenes of tension

Manga artist Kuga's father has passed away, and his mother abandoned her family long ago, so he is writing shoujo manga to support his two younger siblings, as well as taking tenants in their house. Goshiki comes in as an emergency manga assistant to do backgrounds and screen tones on Kuga's manga, and ends up being a tenant not long after. Oh, and they are engaged, under circumstances that are pretty darn strange.

The very basic setup of this story reminds me of Urusei Yatsura, with the more-than-vaguely coercive engagement due to the ML's ignorance of alien customs, and Kuga experiencing physical discomfort when Goshiki is unhappy or displeased. It's quite a bit sweeter, though, and who knows, it could be a two-generations-later meta-commentary on the magical girlfriend stories of the '80s and '90s. Thankfully, Goshiki and Kuga do far better at negotiating the emotional pitfalls of this setup than Ataru and Lum ever did.

Still, despite attractive art and a nice small-cast, neighborhood story feeling, not to mention the younger sibs are incredibly cute, this hasn't quite developed its own character in its first volume, and the leads have decided they like each other far too soon. An intense work session to meet Kuga's deadline, and a single shopping trip, seem to have sealed the deal. A love of manga pervades the story, but since I've read plenty of manga with manga fans and/or creators in leading roles (Nozaki-kun, Genshiken, Wotakoi, among others), that isn't all that strong a hook, either.

As usual when I've read something merely decent from J's manga stash, I'm just as happy that I experienced it for free. I'll read more of it if it happens to be lying around...

Ahh, this was SO cute!!

I found it a little slow for a large part of the volume, but I deeply loved Shiori and how naive and sweet she is! Her love for shojo manga is SO relatable and have enjoyed seeing her experience living on Earth and experiencing a different way of life.

Ichiro is best man!! I LOVEEEEE how much he cares for his family and is willing to do anything for his siblings. It was also really enjoyable (and humorous at times!) to read about him working on his manga throughout the story. It was a unique experience reading a manga with someone writing a manga, which has been a first for me in my own reading journey!

The siblings are so cute! I loved the chapter where everyone was hanging out together and being involved. It's also nice to see scenes like that, especially when it led to a VERY cute moment near the end!

Lots of wonderful moments in this one that definitely has me interested in reading the next volume!

It's not really a surprise that Gido Amagakure would write a story with distinct Mary Poppins overtones. Goshiki may not come to take care of protagonist Ichiro's younger siblings, but she's definitely there to save the day, and the imagery of her showing up with a big, black umbrella is hard to mistake. She's also a woman who has descended to the earthly plane from somewhere a little...unusual, let's say, which also throws in some interesting The Little Prince elements. Toss in a rom-com started by a stinger (she seems to have been parasitized by a being from the stars) and this is odd in the best way, a charming story that's more than the recommended spoonful of sugar.

First want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review! I about jumped for joy when I saw this up for a request and even more excited when I got the acceptance. I have been waiting for this manga and honestly can say it didn't disappoint! I really struggled seeing if it should be rated a 4 or 5.

I did go with a 4 (even though it was a 4.5 honestly) because I was a little bit confused by Goshiki and who exactly she is. Also a little bit of points off because it seemed a bit fast paced in volume 1 but I am looking forward to more of this story. Honestly really enjoyed it!

Thank you so much to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for the ARC!
I don't read manga very often, but the description sounded fun, I love stories about books or about people creating stories.
This one is about a struggling manga artist who has to support his younger siblings. One day he gets a new assistant and...cuteness ensues?
The *cof* fantasy portion *cof* kinda threw me off, like ooookay is this what we're doing?
But the family dynamics are cute as hell and all the characters are so vivid and lovable.
The art style is really nice also.
I'll have to read the 2nd volume to see if it goes more in depth about Goshikis background, because I was Confused™.

It’s been a really long time since I read manga and sadly, this wasn’t the hit I was hoping for as I come back to it. While the premise sounded like a nice twist on the meet cute formula, the characters felt quite wooden and didn’t really feel compelling or believable. The tropes just didn’t land and sadly, I wasn’t able to just immerse myself in the story and get carried away with it. I might pick up volume 2, but I won’t be rushing to do so.

This was fine. A very ok first volume. I find I'm hard to please in first volumes as is but the story's premise is ver weird and the romance is pretty flat. I would read the second volume so it gets an extra star for that.

Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for sending me an ARC!!

This manga tells us the story of Ichiro Kuga, a mangaka who has been taking care of his two younger siblings after his parents death; and Shiori Goshiki, who is the princess of a community found in a lost star. She has escaped and found herself being the assistant of Kuga, and through a magical bond, they start to develop more than friendships feelings for each other.

I really liked the way the story came along at the ending of the first volume. Both characters are a bit awkward around each other, which makes them very cute and relatable. The little brother and sister are definitely the best characters i found them so endearing and genuinely amusing. Even if the story plot is not my favourite (and at the beginning i felt like it was going a bit too fast for my liking), i understand that is how manga are written and once you get used to the pace of the story it is very easy to get into it.

I can’t wait to see what happens next with these sweet and loveable characters!!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for providing me with ane-arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun, cute, slice of life story about an uprising manga artist and his newbie assistant whom may or may not be a different entity from human that came from Moon Village. I found the story cute because of the main character, the male lead was a normal looking guy who worked as a manga artist to support both of his young siblings ever since they lost their parents. It was nice to see the story build up the romance between the two leads and does not push them to be together quickly. The female lead was naive and clueless about love, so she learned a lot from the shojo manga the male lead wrote, however, she isnt so dense to not know how to navigate her life away from her hometown.

For me, this was such a cute romance read and i like it despite how slow paced it was.

Sweet and gentle romance between and over-worked older brother trying to keep his small family together and the alien next door assistant he gets romantically entangled with.

The artwork is stunning and the storyline is cute. Definitely one I would recommend to those who enjoy adult romance manga that is sweet and not spicy.

4, I would like to continue the series and recommend it, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for an eARC copy of this to read and review.

It was okay. The story was kinda weird but I guess it was still easy to follow and it was interesting in some part but it totally caught me off guard. I think the story I had in mind was gonna be different.

Something I probably won’t continue but it had its moments. The kabe-don panel was hilarious ngl 🤣

A Galaxy Next Door is the first manga in a series of shojos written by Gido Amagakure. It follows the story of Ichiro Kuga, a young mangaka who, after his father dies and leaves him with his siblings, needs to ensure their future by working hard and saving money. But life isn't easy when you need to meet deadlines and take care of young children, especially when you don't have an assistant. That's when Shiori Goshiki enters the frame. She is a 19-year-old teenage girl who turns out very talented for the job. Ichiro directly accepts her, but what are the risks? When he unexpectedly discovers that she is a princess from another kingdom and that he is betrothed to her, things start to take an interesting turn.

A deception for me this time. I didn't expect much of this shojo, to be completely honest, so I wasn't surprised. Another shojo that makes you think 'Mangakas cannot surprise you anymore', and then they invent something completely farfetched. That's the case with this manga. Not only does it reunite all sorts of clichés with forced proximity and forced marriage, but it has also quite a few things that left me gasping in disapproval. There are a few sexual references here and there that left me very uncomfortable, especially when thinking that this shojo is normally directed toward young teenage girls. I just thought it was weird. I had a hard time finishing this one. Although the drawings were super cute, there were too many texts and the plot didn't live up to my expectations (or tried to surprise me in any positive way).

I think that if you start reading shojos with a manga like this one, it would be fine. However, for those who read a lot of them before, I believe that this manga won't get off the beaten tracks. For all those reasons, I wouldn't recommend it to everybody.

Thank you so much Netgalley and Kodansha for the opportunity to review A Galaxy next Door!

Thank you to Kodansha and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this manga to review!

In this manga we are following a struggling mangaka, who must now look after his orphaned siblings, and a strange being in the shape of a beautiful young woman who becomes his assistant as they struggle to meet deadlines and navigate their feelings for one another.

This manga is competently drawn with well paced plot. It has charcters that at first glance have all the appearance of the romance mediocre: A bland man with no redeeming features and an overly pretty vaguely foreign fashioned Yamato Nadeshiko wannabe. Honestly, this is basically a romantic comedy with an unnecessary sci-fi element! It really could have been the exact same without the weird star supernatural element added. I don't know who this manga is aimed at? It feels extremely self-indulgent on the mangaka's part!

Fumio is a side character and the youngest of the siblings and a fantastically cute addition. Give this a go, if just for Fumio!
