At the Intersection of Love and Death

Rate this book
One is inevitable, while the other often feels so. At the Intersection of Love and Death transports you to distant worlds, haunted places, and lands which never were. The twenty-six stories in this collection span the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and horror exploring love, death, and the places where these two powerful human experiences meet.

"The stories in At the Intersection of Love and Death are loaded with heart with some chills mixed in for good measure. This collection is one to savor." - Beth Cato, author of The Clockwork Dagger

"Michael Haynes tells the stories of people who are as real as your neighbors, imperfect people, aware of their mortality, who wrestle with impossible situations and try to find the human way forward. These are the stories that Harry Chapin might have written, if he'd been a speculative fiction author, and they will stay with you long after you are done reading." - José Pablo Iriarte, Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author

"This collection of elegiac, beautifully-written stories will pull you in and then continue to haunt you. Haynes' impressive debut touches on all the subgenres of speculative fiction while maintaining the same atmospheric and lyrical tone throughout." - Leah Cypess, author of Thornwood and Glass Slippers

I read and blurbed this earlier in 2022. "The stories in At the Intersection of Love and Death are loaded with heart with some chills mixed in for good measure. This collection is one to savor."

I got my book directly from the author at a convention.

This book was so much fun to read! Short stories can be so hit and miss, but I can't think of the last time I enjoyed reading a collection -- from an author whose work I wasn't previously familiar with -- so much. Haynes' stories are tiny gems that pack a lot of punch, emotion and story all into one neat package. As a fellow writer, I feel like I could learn a lot from his economy of style and prose, but as a reader I'm just delighted with his thoughtful takes on (as the title of the collection suggests) love, and death. Highly recommended.

I loved every story in here. I finished it awhile ago but just updated my Goodreads. One story in particular caused me to sleep with a nightlight on!

Enjoy this journey into a mix between Twilight Zone and Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Stories.

I seldom read short stories or fiction that leans into the horror genre. However, I recently bought this short story collection by Michael Haynes.

I started reading Michael’s collection just a couple of days ago. I am now about 80% through the book and have found it difficult to down this collection of stories. Both evenings I kept telling myself, “Just one more then go to bed.” Both evenings I read more than "one more" story.

Many of these stories remind me of the old Twilight Zone television show. The plot of each story is tight and coherent, the atmosphere melancholic but with a touch of horror, and the conclusion unexpected but appropriate. However, these are not “just” horror stories. So far, each has been a study of grief.

Haynes has written a compelling and enjoyable collection of stories. Now, just one more…
