Genre: historical romance, historical fiction
Tropes: different social classes, high born lady
Series: Roguish Gentlemen #1
Cliffhanger: No
Trigger Warnings: murder (mentioned)
Set in the same world as: Imperious Lords series, Inevitable Love series, Ladies and Strays
Rating: 4 ⭐
Spice: 2/5 🌶

I have received this novel as an ARC. Thank you, Lisa Torquay, for this opportunity. All thoughts and opinions are my own and left voluntarily.

"It is your husband's duty to guide you towards the right conclusions."
In other words, to tell her what to think. Hell would freeze over before she accepted any ‘guidance’ without examining it first.

This was a very catchy read that kept me entertained and made me finish it in less than a day. It's exactly what you would expect from a historical romance novel, with a bit of steam, banter and a strong minded lady who falls for someone beneath her station.

“No romantic dreams in this pretty head of yours?”
“No romantic dreams in this clever head of mine,” she corrected him with a tart note.
His low chuckle poured between them. “Too clever for marriage, then.”

The plot was fast-paced, the dialogs were nicely done and I actually enjoyed watching the two main characters torment and tease each other. For the fans of Lisa Torquay, a few characters from previous novels might bring a touch of nostalgia as well, as we get glimpses of how their lives are now.

“I will kill any man who dares to touch you.”
“Can I do the same?”
“Too much work.”
Her eyes narrowed on him as she vented, “Goodness, what a scoundrel you are.”

It was fun, easy to follow and a very nice way to spend an afternoon. I definitely suggest giving this novel a try as it is very cute and a good choice for historical romance lovers.

“My dear Lady Elvina. How delightful to see you here.”
“Divergent opinions, I am afraid.”
“Sweet as ever.”

I was gifted this book by the author for my honest review.
Honestly I've said it before about this author and I will say it again. The way Lisa writes she takes you into the time and place, I felt like I was in those Victorian times with the horse and carriages, walking down the smelly streets of London in by gone times with the ladies in full skirts and bonnets and gentlemen in top hats and tails. Loved reading this story about a wealthy mill owner Percy and Lady Elvina. How Percy manages to marry a Lady someone who was according to the times way above his station even though he is wealthy in his own right. I hope that Matilda her best friend who was betrothed to Elvina,s brother before he was wrongly accused of murder and shipped off to Australia finally gets her happy ever after as well. Hopefully that will come to light in the next book out by Lisa. This story I loved it, it has definitely left me smiling at the end of the book but wishing it still had chapters to carry on reading, that is when you know you have picked up a good book. Well worth the 5 stars as I'm not usually one for reading historical romances but some of these characters I've read about in previous books by this author. Looking forward to the next one being released so I can download that one as well.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Jilted Gentleman stands out and shines. Percy and Elvina were both vivid, complicated characters. Percy is a very successful businessman who has no tolerance for the aristocracy. Percy attempted to marry into society only to be jilted at the altar. He has no plans to give his emotional control to any woman, and he will never fall in love. Elvina is the daughter of a highly esteemed, wealthy Duke. Elvina knows her place in the ton; she will marry a titled man and live her life in the glamour she has been raised. Elvina won’t marry for love but duty and status. Percy and Elvina’s passions combust at their first meeting. They both see the danger, knowing they could never be together and refusing to risk their hearts. When tragedy and scandal strike, Percy is Elvina’s only shelter from the storm of ruination.

I love how these two people know themselves and what they want and don’t want. Both have control of their emotions except when together. Percy and Elvina cannot escape the sensual pull and give into it but stubbornly protect their hearts. The journey the couple takes is made in a slow burn. This gives the burgeoning feelings developing an organic way to grow. Nothing is overnight but is a process. The ebb and flow of emotions and passion were perfect. The plot flowed well and kept my interest throughout the entirety. The physicality and intensity between Percy and Elvina were oh so steamy! The couple’s connection was instantaneous and all-encompassing. Each chapter built on the last, creating a romance I could invest in and kept me riveted to the page.

The Jilted Gentleman is the first book in the Roguish Gentleman series. What a way to begin a series! I couldn’t put this book down; it was a quick, entertaining love story. The journey Percy and Elvina embark on pulls at your heartstrings. Many swoon-worthy moments made the story shine. I cannot wait to read Hadrian’s story! I am so happy to find Lisa Torquay; she breathed new life into this historical romance. I highly recommend this book. The Jilted Gentleman will keep you up reading long into the night! I could not put this enchanting book down.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book through the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Jilted Gentleman is a delightful series start. And a surprise at every turn. From the hot banter to the even hotter steam, to the plot twists, I couldn't put it down.
Elvina, as the daughter of a duke, knows that the filthy-rich tradesman with lands bordering the ducal states would never be the right match for her. Even if their kisses threaten to set fire to theatres, townhouses, and wherever else they are.
Fate, however, will interfere and they will end up married. The straightforward manners that Percy is used to as the owner of the biggest cotton mill in the land will be in deep contrast with the nobility's way of doing things that Elvina grew up in. And will challenge them to find a middle ground to make their marriage thrive.
Another winner from Torquay!

This is one of those books in which you start to read and you don’t want it to end. The author has outdone herself. A beautiful regency setting and characters who are a perfect match for one another. The story is very engaging, the plot will completely consume the reader. The male character is absolutely stunning and the passion between both characters is sensed throughout the story. I’m leaving all the juicy details out because this book is really worth reading.

Lisa Torquay linked someone we already met previously to this new series start. Percy Russel was jilted at the altar by his former betrothed in The Lady and the Mill Worker. Here, our hero meets none less than Elvina, the daughter of the Duke of Rutherford, way out of his league. The attraction between both is as instantaneous as it is forbidden. As a rich cotton mill owner and a trader, the lofty lady is not for him.
But Elvina's family will suffer a hard blow that will leave her ruined in the eyes of the ton. Percy will think nothing of standing in and saving the lady from disgrace. And that's where their love for each other will be sorely tested.
Utter steam, angst, and the challenge to build a relationship amidst strife runs through this compelling story. The most beautiful book in this autumnal crop.
A must read.

I really wanted to love this historical romance more. Elvina and Percy were very likeable and the side characters were interesting. The plot was good, although I couldn’t connect with the story. The writing was difficult and some mistakes took me out of the story and I felt more editing was needed. I want to read more from this series. I received an advanced reader’s copy from the publisher. This review is my honest opinion.

This is Book One in the Roguish Gentlemen series. Wonderfully addictive storyline, pulls you into the Victorian era!
From the moment Lady Elvina and Percy meet their attraction is mutual. She is a feisty and beautiful redhead and he is a very handsome mill owner.
Mr. Percy Russell is the richest mill owner in England. Elvina is the daughter of a Duke. This is an action packed story, with heartaches !
What I love about Lisa Torquay’s books she mentions the plight of the common folk who have to work for a living, and the widows with children.
This another well written storyline, with delicious love scenes and a perfect happily ever after. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

With colorfully depicted descriptions and characters who come across as very realistic, Lisa Torquay makes the first book in her Roguish Gentlemen series entertainingly enjoyable. The historical romance is filled with emotional situations, passionate encounters, and even some humor from time to time. I was constantly pulled into the lives of the main couple, especially when their innermost desires and feelings became known. THE JILTED GENTLEMAN transported me to a period in history where people were often judgmental and consequences of their views could greatly affect someone else’s life.

As the owner of a mill in England, there is little time for Percy Russell to do anything except take care of endless business dealings if he wants the company to remain successful. This suits him just fine as being left at the alter has made him not very fond of interacting with people. Yet the daughter of a duke who is also a close neighbor captures his attention from their first unplanned meeting. Lady Elvina is far above his own station in life, but Percy cannot stop thinking about the spirited woman and how much she tempts him. Unbeknownst to him, images of him repeatedly keep invading her own thoughts and leave Elvina perplexed by her intense reaction.

There are numerous unexpected developments that happen to Elvina and Percy after they meet, and the influence of these circumstances on their futures was frequently unanticipated. How their growing attraction for one another entered into the equation was convincingly portrayed, and I was always eager to discover just what would end up occurring after crucial choices were made. The author certainly took Percy and Elvina on several compelling adventures, and I enjoyed watching their reactions during these events. Whether it was an emotional moment or a scene containing lots of amusing banter, their responses seemed genuine every time. All does not go always smoothly for this couple, though, and I was never quite sure as to how a few of the incidents would work out for them until the whole episode concluded. Received arc from author. Rating - 4.5 Stars

The 'Spitfire and the 'Blackguard'!
THE JILTED GENTLEMAN was another great example of Torquay's ability to capture and draw you straight into a different time and place with such ease, vibrancy and colour.
Sending you down a captivating path fraught with angst, the clash of the social divide, the allure of the forbidden, delicious provoking banter, emotional awakening and discovery, shocking twists and stumbling hurdles, baiting humour, insecurities, heartwarming romance and heated steamy intimacy. All balanced and rounded off with a resounding resilience to overcome each challenge and a comforting blanket of old friends (from multiple past series) to add warmth, continuity and perspective to this great read.
From the start, the instant baiting, goading and 'rubbing each other up the wrong way' teasing, sparked such a smile enducing chemistry that the smouldering fireworks, between Percy and Elvina, became so enjoyable to see lit, exploded and counter released in equal measure. That I was eagerly awaiting their next encounter with bated breath. I just couldn't deny the palpable sexual attraction, allure and yearning that radiated off this well matched pair, so delightfully, that they kept me reading and coming back for more.
I especially loved getting a chance to peel back the prideful, cold façade Percy erected (in The Lady and The Mill Worker) to expose his multi-layered core beneath. A maelstrom of strong passion, subtle roguish charm, hidden compassion and intelligence meshed with an instinctive need to throw up walls to protect oneself... many traits that can be mirrored, in splintering degrees, in Elvina, beneath her clever sharp wit and shield of duty expected cheerfulness.

A great series opener that entangled me so effortlessly in the couple's hard won happily ever after.
I can't wait for book 2 to finally shed light on the event that has so tragically and hauntingly changed Matilda and Hadrian's, Elvina's once happy go lucky brother's, life.

This book surprised me in that I was expecting to find the beleaguered Gentleman, down on his luck, a working class man with no prospects and falling for The Lady. I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find him already successful and with no intention of losing his heart – again. I very much loved Percy, right from my first meeting of him and couldn’t wait to turn each page of this story. And I adored that Lady Elvina was both fiery and sure of herself. Percy’s name for her – Spitfire, couldn’t have been more appropriate. They played off one another extremely well and the flirty banter, the heated exchanges, and the wicked passion, all kept me entranced. Add in a murder that put The Lady out of favor with The Ton, and this had all the elements of a book that I read in just a few days. I WILL say that, as I was nearing the books’ conclusion, I kept thinking, the author is going to wrap this up too neatly. I should NEVER have thought that of Lisa’s talents. It’s a cliff-hanger with the murder, and will be explored in the next book. Thank goodness, because I cannot wait to read Hadrian and Matilda’s story, set in hot, dangerous Australia. This was a fun, sexy, romantic read and I’m very grateful to have been given another look into Lisa’s talented world.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book with every promise to rate it honestly. The opinions expressed here are solely my own.

I requested an ARC of this book, and all opinions are my own.

This is a new series that ties in with prior ones, but I think it stands well on its own. The story is nothing new - merchant falling for an aristocratic lady - but it's told without the usual class vs class anger and mistrust. In fact, Percy Russell - the wealthy mill-owner, has every right to be distrustful of the aristocracy after being left at the altar by his former betrothed - Lady Emma - the sister of an Earl. While it has hardened his heart to love, he actually learned from Lady Emma and her husband how to make his mill a better place for the workers, and is an overall really good person.

When he meets Lady Elvina Dankworth - the daughter of a Duke - it's not exactly a meet-cute as she mistakenly takes him for a servant. Their chemistry is immediate, though, and continues to flourish throughout the story. When they finally give in to their desires it is hot and steamy.

There is a central conflict involving Elvina's family that looks like it will extend over at least one more book, but it's intriguing and keeps you captivated.

This was an enjoyable book, and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Lady Elvina Dankworth is the daughter of a duke and she is expected to marry well. Too bad Elvina is more attracted to Mr Percy Russell, their neighbor and the biggest mill-owner in their area. During a few interactions, Elvina and Percy have fun flirting with each other. Their attraction is growing by leaps and bounds but because of duty, Elvina cannot marry a tradesman. When Elvina's brother is accused of murder, her chances of finding a good match goes down considerably. Who should step forward but Percy.....he offers to marry her. Unsure of what they both are doing Elvina and Percy marry. Things are going beautifully until the past starts to get into Percy's head. Just when it looks Elvina is going to be in an unhappy marriage, she decides to take matters into her own hands. Of course this gets Percy's attention and together they finally get their happy ending.

I really enjoyed this first book in the Roguish Gentlemen series from Lisa Torquay. Both characters were very will written and their story line was so fun. I loved the flirtiness that the author brings to her characters. Their first meet had some wonderful humor you just couldn't help but laugh along. Great story and I can't wait for Elvina's brother, Lord Hadrian Dankworth story next!

Really enjoyed reading! Took me a little bit to warm up to the main characters. Elvina and Percy are a solid couple. They have great chemistry, the feels and the ability to sustain a relationship. I like that Percy is a mill owner instead of a Lord. I did have a bit of a hard time with the fantasy of a mill owner because of social injustice issues around fabric production. However, Percy gives every indication of being a lovely human who treats his employees well and with respect.
This story has lots of vegetables (or is meaty for the non vegetarians), you can really sink your teeth into it. About half of the story follows their life after marriage. I was not fully sold on the emotional fear that Percy develops. Really enjoyed Elvina's growth throughout the story and her spirit!
This is my second book by Lisa Torquay, she is now on my to read list. I really, really want to read the sequel to this book!! Really interested to learn how they develop individually and how their love story unfolds.

“The Jilted Gentleman” is one spicy romance! The aristocratic Lady Elvina Dankworth is at the age where she is getting pressured to settle and marry. She realizes its her duty, but losing her independence is frustrating! Then she encounters Mr. Percy Russell, mill-owner. He’s everything the men of the ton are not; driven, smart, breathtakingly handsome, at times very rude and untitled. The ton and her father will not approve…but will that stop her? Percy is left breathless and entranced by the Duke’s daughter, but being jilted by another member of the ton has left him more driven than ever by his work and wary of commitment. I love the plot it’s romantic, fun and hot. The tension and banter between Percy and Elvina drove me crazy! They both captured my heart! I could not put their story down! Thank you so much to Lisa Torquay for the opportunity to read about a smart independent Lady who challenges everything the ton stands for and never looks back!

I was provided a copy of this ebook by the author for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book. This is the first in a trilogy of related stories, and does a wonderful job of introducing the characters and setting up the conflicts that will carry into the other books.

I thought the development of Percy and Elvina, and their relationship, was handled well. The world the inhabit was established well, with references to the changing social, economic, and political situation in Great Britain when the book is set. I like how Torquay used characters from previous books in cameos and as examples that the characters refer to. I am curious where the next two books will go.

There were a few editing issues (missing words, odd phrasing, punctuation), but this did not detract from the overall story.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I was very excited to start as the previous novel I read by Torquay was very entertaining and quite fun.

I found quite a few typos--mainly with the characters names--which took me out of the narrative a few times. I had to decide if there was suddenly a new character (as many characters had very similar spelled names) or just a typo.

About 75% into the novel and I couldn't decide what the plot was and started skimming the (many) sex scenes. Eventually I came to realize that this novel was setting up several characters for their love story in additional installations and that's why there were so many loose ends and unfulfilled plots.

All in all, the story felt a bit cobbled together and rushed. The protagonists were sweet and entertaining to read about, but I was left in the end feeling quite unfulfilled.

The characters are unconventional. Elvina has it all. She is expected to marry someone of rank and continue the family as directed. When she meets a man who is so different, she isn't sure that is the life she wants to lead. Percy wasn't born to wealth, but through hard work has made quite a fortune for himself. He was jilted before and expects to never let another woman have any control over him again. When he meets Elvina, he thinks he just wants her in his bed but because she is from a high-ranking family, he knows that is not possible. When a scandal befalls Elvina's family, Percy marries her so that she will have his protection. What he didn't expect was that he would fall in love with his wife. She is being shunned by her people and she worries that it will hurt his business. Can they make a life together? Will they have a real and loving marriage?

Lisa Torquay has a gift for drawing you into the story.
In The Jilted Gentleman, we are reacquainted with Mr Percy Russell, a wealthy mill owner that was left at the alter by Lady Emma. Percy has refrained from any emotional relationship to avoid future humiliation. That is until Lady Elvina Dankworth, daughter of the Duke of Rutherford appears in his life. Lady Elvina is pressured to make a match with an eligible member of society. Elvina wants more than a match that the ton expects from a lady of her rank. That is until the family is caught up in a social scandal.
Lisa Torquay once again has created strong characters, especially independent women during a historical period in time that did not allow for women to have their own ideas.
Follow Elvina and Percy as their lives intertwine and they challenge each other and the society of the ton with their independence.

I absolutely adore all the books written by Lisa Torquay. She brings strong independent  personalities on paper that are full of life, fierce and hope to change the world.

Both main characters have known their place in society yet from the first moment they were intensely pulled to each other. Although due to their social classes, Lady Elvina from ducal lineage and Percy just simple business owner, they could never be together. Because of one  tragedy though, Percy might be the only one that would be able to save Elvina from further ruination. So there is only one choice......

I honestly love Lisa's creative writing. She brings all her characters wonderfully to life. I love the sizzling, steam and the thrill she creates. So to sums it up, this was another wonderful easy read for lovers of regency romance.

This story is set in England at a time when the nobility had grand ideas about how great they were and how lowly anyone was who made an actual living. I consider it to be historical-ish. The setting, dress and language are mostly historical, but occassionally a modern phrase will slip in.

Elvina is the daughter of a duke and very attracted to Percy, who is a very successful owner of a cotton mill. Sparks, angst and heat fly between them as they try to avoid their attraction to each other. Elvina is strong and Percy is determined. Both have misconceptions about the other that take some effort to overcome.

This story has well-written characters and believable situations that pull you into the story.

I received an advance reader copy and this is my honest review.

I loved the slow burn and witty banter.

Elvina and Percy matched very well from the very beginning. There's a bit of mistaken identity which added to the fun.

I like that while Elvina is a duke's daughter, she doesn't yearn to be married right away unlike her other peers. She doesn't have her head in the clouds and she's intelligent too.

Percy is rich by trade and not by birth. He is a hard working man who tried his best to steer clear of Elvina because of their stations in life, but fate had other plans.

There's a lot of tension and sexual chemistry. Their love scenes were passionate and because of some unfortunate circumstance, the duke allowed their marriage.

Guaranteed HEA.

This steamy historical romance has a lot of sexual tension and sizzle! As the Duke’s daughter, Elvina Dankworth knew exactly what was expected of her. Never mind the strong attraction she felt for wealthy mill owner Percy Russell. However, when her family is rocked by scandal, the Duke reconsiders the match previously considered unacceptable for his beloved daughter. I found the book interesting and engrossing. It also sets the stage and whets the reader’s appetite for the next volume is the series, “The Transported Lord.” I thank the author for an advance review copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book! Percy and Elvina’s story is woven through with passion, excitement, drama and love. The other wonderful part is that it is like visiting with old friends! The other characters in her books are ones we’ve met before and grown to love as well. Keeping up with them is a great sideline to the story, as well as extremely satisfying that they stay true to their original values and characters. Wonderful story!

4 1/2 Stars!! Book one in the Roguish Gentlemen series, can be read, and enjoyed as stand-alone. Full length told in dual POV with HEA. I liked that there were secondary characters from the previous series, Ladies & Strays. I loved both Percy and Elvina, they had sparks flying from the beginning. They are both intelligent and gave as good as they got, their dialogue was fantastic. Small lack of communication was not drawn out. There is a secondary plot throughout the book that sets up the next in the series. I highly recommend this steamy Historical Romance!!

I enjoyed this book, it was a fun and easy read.
And even though I enjoyed the plot I found hard to connect with the characters. I thought it was in some ways to superficial and there wasn't enough depth to their personal feeling and thoughs. I loved the banter and the witty dialogue, but the story felt a bit rushed sometimes.
