Burn to Rise #2

Beyond the Lights

Rate this book
Life is about getting knocked down and still getting up each time. If you never give up, you win.

Two and a half months have passed since Leah walked out on Søren, shattering his world and forcing him back into the retreat of his mind. He’s still hurt. She’s unbalanced. But no matter how addictive avoidance is, with the Burn to Rise festival happening, the time to face reality has arrived.

Thirty-eight cities and seven weeks of music put their willpower to the test as everything they’ve buried under piles of lies and self-deception is brought to the surface once again. Blowing hot and cold, they try to keep the need to be close silenced, until the fear to disclose the truth explodes and all the repressed emotions and the strings that tie them together unravel.

As Leah and Søren open up about the things that crippled them, strengthening their relationship in ways they’ve never imagined, life finally falls into place. However, Ryker’s presence lurking in the shadows follows them everywhere. And he has no intention of letting them go.

** THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE **
Beyond the Lights is the conclusion of Leah and Søren's story. It should be read after Behind the Lights.

ARC REVIEW
If this duet was a Netflix series you'd binge the shit outta it!

At the end of Behind the lights my heart was broken and a piece of my soul was stolen.
Beyond the lights slowly glued me back together, to break me apart all over again. To, then, finally fix me and return what it stole with added interest.

The Burn to Rise duet, has been nothing but spectacular! And although it isn't your typical romance novel, it is real and beautiful.

The raw emotions this duet invokes are earth shattering, and I don't think I'll ever find anything like it again. Soren and Leah will always have a special place in my heart "here and in the afterlife"

A note to the Author: Cannon, you are incredible! I love what you can do with words. How you can make me feel what they feel, like I'm a part of the story. Thank you for writing one of my favourite books!

Everything hurts. LA Cannon shattered my heart, my soul, and my world with this one. Such a great continuance from Volume I (Behind the Lights) and the cliffhanger we were given. This one gave me so many feelings and had me staying up until 2 AM to finish, but also not wanting to finish it too quickly and have it end. AND IT HAD ME CRYING AT 2AM???! What the fuck. 😂😭

This follows the same characters we saw in Volume I: Behind the Lights and continues the story on the American wide tour with all of the different rock bands over the summer. From that awful cliffhanger that had me crying, I finally got the closure I needed from Leah and Sóren’s story. I even love just how much LA brought in the side character stories and let us get a good look at them. BUT, I definitely would not be mad if we had a little spinoff where we got to see more of the side characters. Like Chris and Mark??? Ian and the kids??? Astrid and Alex??? *wink wink* I guess I really just don’t want the Burn to Rise fandom to end, as I adored each and every single one of the characters.

For those who don’t know, this is a rockstar romance that follows Norwegian and German rock bands - where the leading vocalists find themselves in love and… after the first book, in a bit of a sticky situation. Can Leah and Sóren work through their individual pasts and the same nightmare that plagued both of them at different points in time? Hint: Sóren's brother is fucking evil.

Trigger warnings: there are mentions of suicide, rape, domestic violence, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, etc. This can be seen as a rather dark story, but it shines light one some very important topics and I know that LA is using her voice and platform to continue raising awareness for these topics.

I was excited to read this book as an arc because honestly I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I was again amazed by the way the writer managed to touch so many topics in a way that it makes you feel, think, cry, smile and sigh. Perfect balance among the characters. I liked the development, the morals of the story and the things that stayed with me after finishing reading it. Overall this duet is a perfect read for those who search for an unconventional story surrounded by music, emotions, uncomfortable truths, humor and a sense of relatability. 100% reccomended! I wish their story never ended! ❤️❤️❤️

ARC Review

Behind the Lights, the first part of the Burn to Rise duet, had me opening a bottle of wine, furiously pacing my apartment in utter despair and annoying my husband with sighing to no end. All of this in the middle of the night upon reading the last chapter.

If Behind the Lights shattered me, then it's safe to say that, after agonizing 4 months of waiting, Beyond the Lights put me back together.

The story of Leah and Søren develops further in this instalment, both fighting fighting their own demons of the past, finding a way to the future, while touring the States with the most amazing Burn to Rise festival. We get to experience the turmoils of their old friends and new ones (*hint Aussies) while also getting a glimpse of the exciting, but also tiring tour life.

As with the first one, I couldn't put this book down as I was eager to see how it ends. But at the same time I was sad that it would end.
Nevretheless, Vol.II again brings ALL THE FEELS forth that will keep you glued to the pages in anticipation and also bliss.

L.A. Cannon has once again shown her impeccable way of the feather and word flow that is just bewitching to read (with all the dirty, heavy and smexy stuff in between *hint*hint*), hence fortifying her as one of my favorite authors ;))).

Ms. Cannon has truly outdone herself with this phenomenal story. It's emotionally gripping, raw, and put me through a roller coaster of emotions. From heartbreak, to tears, to laughter, to hope, and to happiness...It's absolutely incredible ride and one that I was grateful to experience.

The journey that Leigh and Soren take you on is one that reminds us that not all paths to love are easy. Some are hard...filled with pain, sorrow, and regret...But, the most extraordinary types of love stories are the ones that will show you the way back. Falling hard, losing hard, then winning hard in the end. It's an absolutely beautiful and glorious comeback.

Like being on stage, the chemistry and connection that is projected between Leigh and Soren is still so vibrant and alive. Every high and low is felt as this couple's angsty, powerful, passionate, and consuming story plays its final note. It will rock your world, so remember to breathe through it all and trust that LA will see you through to their happy ending.

There are so many heartbreaking and beautiful moments make up Leigh and Soren's EPIC love story. Moments of angst, love, drama, friendship, heartbreak, redemption, and healing. This is a story that has so much depth. It's intense, emotional, raw, and so DAMN GOOD!

I have so much love for this couple. Their story moved and impacted me. A truly unforgettable ride.

This is a slow-burn romance rockstar, with tons of metal/rock music, it's told from a dual point of view, with a second chance at love, and has heartfelt romance and unconditional friendships! This book it’s emotional and touches on topics some people find hard, addiction, domestic violence, and mental health issues. This book follows the same characters as the first book Behind the Lights and the continuation from where the cliffhanger left at. We get to know these characters more extensively, their growth, and their development process. The way L.A. Cannon highlights these topics is incredible. I don't think I'll ever find anything like these two books again. Both books are phenomenal!! Soren and Leah will always have a special place in my heart. The Burn to Rise duet, has been nothing but beautiful and hopefully one day it will turn into a Netflix series! L.A. Cannon's writing style is extraordinary.

I don't have words to express how much I loved this book and this series.

Cannon has outdone herself again! If you read Behind the Lights and thought it was amazing, Beyond the Lights is even better.

I have read this book 3 times now and I still laugh, cry, get excited and feel with these characters. Cannon's ability to draw me into the story, to make me feel one with the characters and like I am part of their group is amazing and powerful. I am sad that the story has come to an end because I want more of these characters, and not only Leah and Søren, but all her characters - they are all made to feel important to the story. I 100 % won't say no to her writing more books about them.

That being said, Cannon's attention to detail and involvement of current events will have you reminding yourself that Leah and Søren aren't real. But have you wishing Buried Alive and Darken Omen were. I actually think she could write a book of lyrics for these bands.

In conclusion, I have never read a book that has left me feeling so whole and gave me so much.... not only did Cannon give us the story of Leah and Søren, but also the story of their bands, their friends, the Burn to Rise festival AND also the opportunity to reflect on a variety of topics and current events that are not always deemed socially acceptable to talk about. For this alone, she deserves a medal.

And a special note about the beautiful human that L.A. Cannon is:

When Cannon set out to write this novel and series, she wanted to include something that was real and would get people thinking about stuff we usually don't talk about - something that could scream in silence at someone at the other end of the world that they are not alone. She wanted to portray the excruciating pain of the truths we sometimes hide behind weak smiles. And this she did! And she took it one step further by donating her 1st paycheck from Beyond the Lights to the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

"Don't f*cking let society tell you something's wrong with you because you don't follow its rules" ~Søren, Beyond the Lights

If the first book was a five-star. This is more. Way more.

Once again, L.A. Cannon outdid herself. The way this author can portray emotion and carries it into your heart is just mindblowing. When I tell you I laughed, I cried and then laughed and cried again – you wouldn’t believe it but I did.

Just to give you a glimpse of how well she portrays the way the characters are feeling: “Soren had already fallen from grace forever with all the shit he had done in the past. The lies, the fights, the frugs, the selfishness, the betrayals, the mistakes. He knew redemption wasn’t for him, that his soul was doomed, but watching her running away felt like being condemned to perdition.”

Or… with Leah’s side: “Most people probably thought she was insensitive and a coward and they wouldn’t be wrong. But at that point, she didn’t care. Surviving was more important than other people’s judgement. Besides, nothing anyone could tell her would be worse than the things she silently screamed to herself.”

It’s just brilliant the way she can show how devastated, angry or happy they are. L. A. Cannon has a magic way with words. It’ll hook you up.

The second instalment of the Burn to Rise duet shows life to Soren and Leah after they break up—how miserable and confused they are and how things sour—or heat up—quickly with having to spend time together in the same festival.

The consistency in L. A. Cannon's work is brilliant. Everything is planned out to the fucking detail. Timelines match, World tour days… From festival scenarios to concerts with actual lyrics created by her… It’s just too good to be true. Even the secondary character’s affecting problems match the story perfectly. It’s so perfectly intertwined it gets you hooked on learning about them as if it were a biography about a true Rock Band! She is fucking good at creating the world around them and this does NOT disappoint.

It gives me faith that there are well-hidden treasures around somewhere. This is most certainly one of them!

And just like the first book, this is no empty romance for just a good reading time.

The author approaches hard—and sometimes taboo—subjects, showing how people shouldn't e ashamed to have/feel and how it is OKAY to have help from family and friends. Subjects such as mental health and domestic violence are really important in the kind of society that we live in and I am proud to have supported an author that brings awareness to this.

Once again, we can feel the struggles (even the breathlessness and suffocating moments) the MC’s go through, giving us that feeling of inclusion in the story—a writing skill not many have left nowadays.

Anyway if you’re looking for a well-plotted book, that brings awareness to important subjects but has good tropes like:
Rockstar romance, second chance, a strong female lead, a broody sexy metalhead hero and kind of “enemies” to lovers. But also lots of angst, sexy and funny moments!!

“She didn’t have all the answers, didn’t know what the future held for them, but there was one thing that would forever remain undisturbed. Even if the sky fell and the stars died, Soren would always be her beginnings and her one end.”

Beyond the Lights is a rockstar romance, the second novel by L.A. Cannon and book two of the Burn to Rise duology.

This is a second-chance romance novel following Leah and Sren after the events of book one and the intense ending. Again, please be aware that there are quite a few TWs related to violence, abuse, etc.

Without revealing too much of the events in the first book, while the first book tears a reader apart, this book acts as the saving grace and lets us know in the end everything will be OK.

Just like the first book, this one is also slightly paced but packs a great deal of emotion and quality content with characters that you fall in love with, be they the main characters or the side characters.

This is the first time I've felt so satisfied reading a duology that's a mixture of everything I love to read about. Yes, it gets dark at times, but the author's writing skills make sure that there's this balance in the story. It feels like you're on an emotional roller coaster that's going to stop safely, but it's exhilarating and scary at the same time.

I absolutely loved this book and the duology as a whole, but hopefully there will be more books in the future because the author has introduced main characters and couples whose stories I'd love to read.

an inside look at the struggle of rockstars

I love Leah and Soren. Just go into this series expecting more of an internal look at the struggles of 2 independent rockstars. When they are together it’s a whirlwind romance but not written in the traditional way. It’s more of a raw journal of their lives and waiting to see if they can have both their dreams and each other. Soren’s mom made me giggle so hard! This was such a journey and worth the read!

The Sequel was everything we'd expected to be and even more.
Catching up with the aftermath of the first book's ending we get deeper into these characters and their dynamics. Buckle up for a new journey filled with a heavy dose of music, suspense, romance, complicated relationship/ friendships and character development all tied with L. A. Cannon's gorgeous writing style. If you loved these characters before you'll do even more so now. And if you love twists, this is exactly the book for you.

This series is a guaranteed 5 star read and will stay with you, like very few books do.

HOLY HELL!
It's almost 4AM and I just finished this gem..
And holymoly.. You've outdone yourself (again!)..
I laughed, cried, yelled throughout this story!
You've broke my heart and then pieced it back together because of all the feels..

The way you write is beautiful and how you bring everything to life, it's surreal..
Leah& Søren had my heart from the very (Wattpad) beginning and they'll have it forever!

Thank you for writing this beautiful masterpiece! Can't tell this enough!! You are one hell of a writer with a golden pen or fingers (whatever you prefer!)

I can't wait to have both of the paperback versions to admire and re-read!

This series changed my life. Every person who's been through trauma should read these books. I know you're worried it might be triggering and I'm not going to say it won't be. But I promise it's worth it. And if you still have doubts, send the author a message. She can guide you through it or tell you what parts to skip if that's necessary. She's that awesome.

If you have a loved one that's been through something traumatic, this is the series for you too. It will help you understand it and see if from different perspectives.

Now don't go thinking it's a heavy, sad series without fun. There's love, romance, humor, and awesome music in it too. Lot's of it.

It's impossible to put a stamp on it or shove it into a genre box. It holds something for everyone.

For me it's about chosen family, love, and healing. A message of hope for all of us.

It made me feel seen and understood, while becoming part of both band's families. Of L.A. Cannon's family.

Please read this book. For the people who feel understood by it. Or to experience live music through words. It's a unique, magical experience. One the author can write like no other. Or because you want support a pure-hearted passion project by an author who did all of it herself and works hard to make sure people know her series out there.

Loved it. Recommend it. Will read again.

After finishing book 1 I couldn't wait to delve into book 2 of this duet, desperately looking for the answers I needed. I enjoyed the story however, there were parts through the middle where I felt there was repetitiveness and at times I did feel slightly disinterested. Do not let this put you off reading though as it is an absolute must to get closure on the story of Leah and Soren and romance is not my usual genre!

Cannon writes with such emotive skill that I really do feel I know Leah and Soren so well and I feel their pain, happiness, heartache and a mix of several other emotions whilst reading. I have never heard distressing scenarios put into more accurate words than what Cannon does and this demonstrates a true understanding of situations that are unfortunately so real for so many people.

I enjoyed learning more about the side characters and I would look forward to reading more spin-offs into these characters lives.

I must highlight the page at the end of the book that calls for readers who are facing their own struggles to reach out for help! A beautiful way to end a beautiful story and an important message that all should hear!

The perfect ending for the perfect series.
I know that third person pov isn't for everyone, but no one can write it like this author. Her poetic ways shine through all the series, making you feel every raw emotion.
Her characters are flawed and real. The accuracy with which she describes places, faces, vibes and feelings will blow your mind and transport you into this amazing world full of music and friendship.
I laughed, I cried, have some mini heart attacks, some anxiety, all because this story. I inhale it more than once, breath through the drama, smile through the cuteness. To be honest I also wanted to punch some of this characters.
We have a lot of sexy time: in the shower, outside, on the tour bus, in hotels, bound to leave you hot and bothered. But it's not only sex, it's intimacy, understanding, connection and even healing.
This series will break your heart and put it back together in the most amazing way. I get the feeling that every person that had some similar problems will identify with this story and save it in their hearts. It already has a place in mine.
Don't miss out on this journey, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

This was a highly anticipated second part of the duet and I didn’t want it to end. What a rollercoaster of emotions this duet was! This book follows the same characters from Behind the Lights and continues Leah and Soren’s heart wrenching love story after the cliffhanger from book 1.

I loved the plot, the main and supporting characters, the world, everything so much. The characters were raw, real, and beautiful in their actuality. Words don’t suffice for how much I loved this duet.

The writing is beautifully captivating and I was thoroughly engaged. This duet made me cry, laugh, smile, and think, yet I stuck with it. This is an unconventional rockstar romance, but that should not deter anyone from reading it. I could not get enough of this book. I’ve been thinking about the words, feelings, characters I felt since I finished the book and honestly this was a pretty difficult review to write because of all the feels.

Highly, highly recommend this duet!

I have been waiting for this book since the second I finished Behind The Lights, and damn! Now I just want to hug Soren and Leah and just keep hugging them.

"Beyond The Lights" starts two and a half months after the first book of this duet, Behind The Lights, finishes. And it picked the emotions right up! There is no drawn out drama, but rather it showed the reality of the hurt that Søren experienced, the heartbreak Leah went through. It shows their emotional journey as they go through... a lot of things. They are like yin and yang, really. Two halves of a soul. Their story was beautiful, heartbreaking, and wholesome all at once. They are soooooooooo made for each other!

But you know what made me love their story? Them, obviously, and the side characters. Like, literally everyone in this book was SUCH a nice part of the story! I can't imagine loving the book as much if it had not had these amazing characters. All together, they made this book happen. They made Søren and Leah who they are. And I love them so so so much.

I am gonna be totally honest, I did expect a liiiittle more romance, but when I read the "Afterward" by L. A. Cannon, everything clicked in place and I fell in love. So please please please give this duet a try! I am sure by the end, you'll love them too! ❤️

PS- Please pay heed to the trigger warnings. Because Burn to Rise duet deals with things that can be very triggering.

Beyond The Lights is book 2 in The Burn to Rise duet. A continuation of book 1 that ends in a cliffhanger. Told in 3rd person with duel povs.
I was floored by book 1 and stayed up all night to finish this one as I couldn’t put it down. These books are very long but trust me you just want more and more of Leah and Soren and the whole amazing crew of Metalheads.
A story about soulmates that will break you and fix you. A story with obstacles and distance but never a lack of love. It touched on many subject matters that are woven into the love story that will touch your soul and make you feel so much for these amazing characters, main and secondary.
The writing is AMAZING! I am in awe of this author and the way she made me feel so much and never want to leave this fictional world.
Now on my Favorites list and one of my top favorite couples .

This sequel was even better than the first one , a nice slow burn full of angst , pain and love.

It was easy to fall into this world of Rock and Roll again, with triggering topic still as mental health, addiction, but as the first one , very well written and describes like we can see it in the real life . And for that *chef kiss*.

The romance has a better place than the first book , but there is still a all world describe in details around them that allows us to know everything.

The sex is hot and sexy. And I loved this two characters, their love was sweet with a beautiful second chance in love HEA.

wow just wow

Ive been holding onto reading this for awhile. I’m so glad I finally read this book series. It really was truly a beautiful story. You don’t have to be a fan of the genre of music these characters sing to love the story. Every trigger that is involved in this story was written tasteful and real without being overly graphic. All the side characters are all lovable and make you fall even harder for Soren and Leah. The beginning was amazing but the ending to this love story was perfect.

perfect end to this duet!

Emotional, deep, and touching on so many hard subjects with class and humour mixed in, this love story was epic!

From everything Leah and Søren went through from the day he picked up his new guitar until now…just incredible! And along the way, we got to fall in love with their bands!

Love the writing, the attention to detail, and the writer’s ability to make me feel like I was literally at these concerts. So well done.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves rockstar romance, characters with depth, and a love story that comes out on top!

It’s a beautiful story of love, friendship and people overcoming obstacles in life. The struggles with mental health are so real for people and to be able to connect with a story so deeply is amazing. I love the romance but it was that deep connection Leah had with all the people in her life that got me. The support system and coming out of the trauma really resonate with people.
I bet some of the scenes live rent free in the minds of a lot of readers. 💜💜

The perfect sequel to a sizzling, heartfelt and heart-aching rockstar romance <3

L.A.Cannon truly ripped my soul apart and then put the broken pieces back together by the end. I love how she weaved in mental health into this series. This ain't your typical rockstar romance novel; it's a heavy mix of dark rockstar, mental health issues, friendship and as well as dope music. This series is too real to be true; and I mean it in the best way possible.

I can't wait to see more of this badass author's work <3

This book torn me up. Heavy topics but written so raw and real. Which drew me in. It gave me all the feels. Where I laughed and cried sometimes at the same time. To see what they all had to go through was so hard to read. But again the way it’s written just makes you want to binge and want to know more. I highly recommend this duet. Man, what a story. The continuation of Leah and Soren’s story and man what a roller coaster ride of emotions and all the feels LA brings out in her characters and us readers. This story is the continuation of Behind the lights. This book was such a raw, and real look at human struggles. L.A. Cannon does not shy away from difficult topics, and hits them head on.

Leah and Soren’s story is real, imperfect, and gripping. I feel like I know these characters just by L.A Cannon’s beautiful, and detailed descriptions.

Highly recommend this duet 🔥❤️

With Soren and Leah not together, can they survive the Burn to Rise festival tour where both bands are performing.

Having got so drawn into Behind the Light, this book was compulsive reading.

Seeing Buried Alive growing as a band and watching Soren and Leah trying to find their way was amazing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am now heading to book 3.
