The Griffin Poetry Prize Anthology 2009: A Selection of the Shortlist

Rate this book
The Globe and Mail called the Griffin Poetry Prize “a rich tribute” to the form and “an annual report on the state of the poetry nation.” This year’s edition, featuring some of the finest work from the collections of extraordinary poets worldwide, reads like a who’s who of contemporary poetry. Selections were chosen by noted poets Michael Redhill, Saskia Hamilton, and Dennis O’Driscoll, and the result is a rich mosaic of a form that remains, in its relatively compact shape but often complex language, one of literature's most enduring gifts.

What an amazing and inspiring collection of poems. I have made a discovery of my poets familiar and unfamiliar who are all extremely gifted. This is a tribute to the English language and poetry. Derek Mahon (Life on Earth) is a wonderful poet that I have just discovered. I am drawn to his work, his ideas inspire me as both a writer and a reader. His "Art Notes"- using Edward Hopper, Rene Magritte and Maurice Wilkins are phenomenal.

A small sample from (1) The Lighthouse In Maine
(Edward Hopper)

It might be anywhere, that ivory tower
reached by a country road. Granite and sky,
it faces every which way with an air
of squat omniscience, intensely mild...

Thus begins a verse that resonates with this poet and poetry lover. This is definitely a prize worthy collection.
