It's a little amazing how much the author improved in some elements but then made other parts become horrible. I would have been so upset if I had paid for this series. First, the storytelling improved vastly. Now there is a main storyline and not just a series of short stories to set up jokes. The characters actually seem more interesting. However, the mysteries set up in the first novel are all explained as an author's note at the end of the book. Secondly, consent is not given for some actions made. Nothing too extreme but it's more annoying how little feelings are taken into account for the guy. Urgh again, it's not the worst manga but it's certainly not good.

Knowing that the author only had two volumes to cram this story into helped with understanding the pacing. I'm so glad I read these! It was a fun and cute story and such a nice read!

It was good

Not the ending I was expecting. I thought we'd get to why Divo couldn't remember. So not getting that was disappointing, but still it was a good read.

Rushed Beyond Belief

This series could have been so much more. I feel like it needed WAY more time to tell its story properly. It could at LEAST have had another volume. It was way too rushed, so much so that one of the main plot points--Divo's amnesia--was explained in a little paragraph in the bonus section of the volume. Like: ???? That was one of the sole motivations behind the plot! Divo had amnesia, so Arika had to "teach" (more like mold/manipulate) him to become a "proper" vampire, all the while he wanted to regain his lost memories. And the explanation at the end was so convoluted too.

The "Romance"

I feel like the only way this could be considered a romance is if Divo recovered his lost memories. Unfortunately, that never happened and it's over now, so...yeah, it's more of a predatory relationship where Arika takes advantage of Divo.

The only way he becomes a real vampire is because he wanted to become Arika's dream vampire guy. His thoughts eventually only circulate about Arika and what she might want, not about him. Like, "I'm sure Arika doesn't want a future like that." He's essentially a prop. And, when he's talking about his memories, he says, "...because when I was empty, no one else but you could fulfill me." There is at least ONE other person who could've "fulfilled" him--himself. You don't need romance or another person to feel whole. Two people can love each other, but it's not like half a person form one, like the popular Greek myth.

One time, Arika's brother even thinks, "This guy is seriously an overgrown baby" after he chomps on what looks like a waiter's tray. That makes the "romance" even creepier now that it's confirmed he has the mentality of a child.

Also, the VERY (second-to-) last panel hints at a relationship between Vampire Lady-in-Waiting with Big Boobs and the dhampir. I'm not even going to talk about the fact that the dhampir's mentor had a gloomy cloud around him, because I'm going to try and see the positive and that he's not jealous, he's concerned that the 13 year old child he raised is interested in a 390ish vampire. At least he initiated it and she looked confused, but the author did leave a note referring to them as "Sai and his girlfriend." So...yikes.

Comedy?

I felt like some moments were supposed to be funny. I did not laugh once. Sure, when they reassembled Divo again, that got a huff of air from the nose, but no full on laughter. Like, Lady Sitria was not funny (just pathetic), and the fact that one of her lady-in-waiting boobs are always resting on her head is a running "gag," if it can even be called that. And all of the vampire ladies were in cat outfits, which again was not funny.

Real Vampires

So the vampire ladies are the closest to what we view as vampires in this series. Yet it feels like one of them is more werewolf-like than anything. And we never learn any names besides Sitria's--unless you look at the extra information at the end.

Also, Divo was a pseudo-vampire, but through the power of ✨believing✨ he managed to become a real vampire? Huh? So did he grow a dick too?

Family

The grandma has no sense of boundaries and because of that I hate her and she's the worst character, even worse than Arika. At least Arika has the excuse of being 16. If the grandmother was reading her PRIVATE self insert fanfic WITHOUT her consent, she should at least told her that no, being held as a blood slave for a vampire is NOT all sexy and romantic.

And don't get me started on that end comic where the little brother turns into the vampire servant of Divo.
