Undeterred by his lack of enthusiasm, she leaned forward, flashing him a set of breasts that didn't so much as defy gravity as flip it off, insult its mother, and piss on it's shoes.
And -
Manuel bared his teeth as if he had fangs... and did not that just turn her on.
"You're the one who's Payne's."
No hesitation on that. No hesitation on his reply either: "Yeah. I am."
Lifting her palm, she peeled back and slapped him across the face. "And do NOT insult my blood."
Payne looked back through the glass at the human on the bed. "Yes. I am in love with him. And if you try to dissuade me by the fact that I have not lived yet enough to judge, I say unto you... fuck off. I need not know the world to realize my heart's desire."
"I want you..." Reaching for the bottom of his loose shirt, he pulled it up slowly, exposing the carved muscles of his stomach. "…to want me."
Oh, sweet destiny, she did.
And he meant what he said. The more she looked, the more those abdominals of his curled and released as if he were breathing hard as well.
"This meant he was a movie star, a drill sergeant, and the president of the United States all rolled up into a sixfoot-tall, stacked son of a bitch. He had a terrible temper, a stunning intellect, and a fuse that was about a millimeter long.
On a good day."
"How old are you?" he asked abruptly. He might be a letch, but he didn't do underage anything. She was sure as hell built like an adult, but who knew what their maturity rate was—"
I am three hundred and five years of age."
Blink. Blink. Annnnnnd one more for good measure. Sure as shit that had to be of age, he thought.
"All his life he'd wondered why he'd never fallen in love, and now he knew: He'd been waiting for this moment, this woman, this time.
The female is mine, he thought.
And even though that made no sense at all, the conviction was so strong, he couldn't question it."
"She's your sister?"
"Don't forget it."
Manny smiled by baring all his teeth. "Then there's something you need to know."
"What."
Manny rose up on his toes and met the fucker eye-to-eye. "If you think you want to kill me now, this ain't nothin' compared to how you're going to feel when I see her again."
"I would do anything for you. Anything."
With that, he pushed his way out... and as the door eased shut, she realized that I love you could indeed be said without actually uttering the phrase.
Actions did mean more than words.
V stepped in close, bringing their faces to within an inch of each other. "You don't have the stomach for it. Trust me."
Those deep hazel eyes held his and didn't blink. "You'd be amazed what I would do to keep you alive."
Abruptly, V's mouth opened, his breath growing tight. And as the two of them stood chest-tochest, he knew every inch of his body, felt all of it at once.
"What are you saying, cop."
-----------------------------------------------
There should be something said between them, V thought. There was just so much...
to be said.
"I want it from you," V bit out. "I need it."
Butch nodded. "I know."
Vishous rolled them over, keeping them joined, and his eyes roamed her face for a long moment. "I have no words. Sixteen languages, but no words."
There was both love and despair in his voice. He was truly handicapped when it came to emotions, and falling in love hadn't changed that... at least, not when things were as stressful as they were right now. But that was okay—after this time together it was okay.
---------------------------------------
"Yes?" he drawled. When she seemed speechless, he sucked on her lip and growled, "If you recall, we were discussing the bathroom? I was thinking maybe I could reacquaint the pair of you. Not sure if you're aware of it, but that sink counter has been crying out for you."
"And you do some of your best work at sinks."
V dragged one fang up her throat. "True that."
"Jesus Christ... to be three hundred years old and find out you had a sibling.
Nice move, moms. Real fucking nice.
To think he'd assumed he'd worked through all of his issues with his parents.
Then again, only one of them was dead. If the Scribe Virgin would just go the way of the Bloodletter and kick it, maybe he'd manage to get on an even keel."
"Christ, he so didn't need a mirror to see himself for the coward and the fraud he was... but there was nothing he could do about it. He was locked in a cage with no key that he could find, years of his family's derision boxing him in and cramping him: The truth behind his wild side was that he was a straight-up pussy. Blay, on the other hand, was the strong one. Tired of waiting around, he'd declared who he was and found somebody to be with."
“With that, he pushed his way out...and as the door eased shut, she realized I love you could indeed be said without actually uttering the phrase. Actions did mean more than words.”
“Butch tightened his grip on his cell and wished there were an app that let you reach through a phone and bitch slap someone.”
“I came to you, Jane. Every night this week, I came to you. I didn't want you to be alone. And I didn't want to sleep without you."
Manny and Payne were amazing characters, and I absolutely loved, loved, luvvved them together! They were such a sweet, sexy couple with a strong emotional connection and explosive chemistry. In fact, their sensual, evocative romance was possibly my favorite since Lover Eternal and Lover Awakened.
Band of Bastards – So many future possibilities with these villainous warriors.
Thomas “Veck” DelVecchio – Now I really can’t wait until Envy comes out!
To Saxton (The Classy Slut),
Do you remember that time when you got beat up and brought to the brotherhood mansion? If no? I sure freaking do, I also remember that vampires heal quickly, and so my question is. Why the hell are you still there? I remember a time when you were lusting after Vishous, and being a big shot lawyer to the glymera. So what the hell happened to your house? I know it’s a scary time with the lessers and all that, but Lash is gone and if the aristocrats of the vampire world are reappearing, my guess is that you could head on home. I am really sick and tired of your Tresseme hair and loafers at first meal. We get it, you and Blay are lovers and all that but man you took it too far and can't he dematerialize to your home. Go home Saxton. In no way do I hate you but you kinda pissing me off with your sexiest man alive routine. You know the Sitch with Blay, let him go.
Thanks
Darien of Team QUAY! (And if you don’t understand team Blay +Quinn)
Love can conquer everything but reality. Which will win every stinking time.
It finally happened, he thought as he burrowed under his shirt and took hold of his heavy cross. All his life he’d wondered why he’d never fallen in love, and now he knew: He’d been waiting for this moment, this woman, this time.
The female is mine, he thought.
And even though that made no sense at all, the conviction was so strong, he couldn’t question it.
“Are you the healer?” she said in a low voice that stopped his heart. “Are you . . . here for me?”
Her words were heavily accented, gorgeously so, and also a little surprised.
“Yeah. I am.” He wrenched off his suit’s coat and threw it into a corner, not giving a shit where the thing landed.
“I’m here for you.”
Jane tightened her arm around his waist. “Are you all right?”
He glanced down at his shellan. “I don’t think my sister is old enough to have sex.”
“V, she’s the same age you are.”
He frowned for a moment. Was she? Or had he been born first?
“Answer me one thing,” her twin said.
“What.”
“Do you love the bas—him. Do you love him?”
Payne looked back through the glass at the human on the bed. “Yes. I am in love with him. And if you try to dissuade me by the fact that I have not lived yet enough to judge, I say unto you . . . fuck off. I need not know the world to realize my heart’s desire.”
“I love her so damned much,” Manny heard himself say. “That’s my heart right there. That’s my woman.”
"Love can conquer everything but reality. Which will win every stinking time."Let me start with the following warning: It is impossible to review any book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series without mentioning spoilers for all the books which came before it. With that in mind, you might not want to read this review if you haven't read the first eight books in the series...
Payne looked back through the glass at the human on the bed. "Yes. I am in love with him. And if you try to dissuade me by the fact that I have not lived yet enough to judge, I say unto you...fuck off."Payne is the twin sister of Vishous. She was kept in forced hibernation by the Scribe Virgin for centuries, and only let out of her cage at the end of Phury's book. She's every bit the warrior that her brother is, and simply does not fit the mold created for Vampire Females.
It finally happened, he thought as he burrowed under his shirt and took hold of his heavy cross. All his life he’d wondered why he’d never fallen in love, and now he knew: He’d been waiting for this moment, this woman, this time. The female is mine, he thought. We first met Dr. Manello in Lover Unbound. He was the Chief of Surgery who had the hots for Jane. The poor guy is brought to the mansion by the ghost of the woman he once cared for. He's asked to operate on a gorgeous woman who isn't real enthusiastic about the idea. If he fails, he's pretty sure that he'll be murdered, and even if she does walk again, her brother might kill Manny just for being around his sister...
“I wish I were whole. I wish I could have given you young if you'd wanted them and could conceive them. I wish I could have told you that it killed me when you thought I had been with anyone else. I wish I had spent the last year waking up every night and telling you that I loved you. I wish I had mated you properly the evening you came back to me from dead. I wish. . ."Vishous was stunned to discover that he had a twin sister and heartbroken to realize that she might die before he had the opportunity to know her.
"I wish I were half as strong as you are and I wish I deserved you. And. . . that's about it."
But by God, he was going to stop running from his cowardice. He had to own his shit - even if it made him hate himself to the core. Because maybe if he did, he'd stop trying to distract himself with sex and drinking, and figure out what he did want.We pop into Qhuinn's life several times throughout this story. He's still convinced that he'll never be with Blay even though he knows he will never love anyone as much as him... He's been whoring and brooding and running himself ragged to the point that John Matthew finally has to set him straight...
Apart from Blay, that was.
Wrath and the Brotherhood had too long ruled this continent, and to what end? The Lessening Society persisted. The Vampire population had scattered. And those arrogant, flabby, feckless humans where everywhere.Where previous books in the series might have provided a POV to see what was happening in the Lessening Society, this book introduced us to a brand new enemy in the Vampire War. The Band of Bastards - chiefly comprised of warrior males who trained with The Bloodletter but didn't make the cut to become members of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. They have a serious chip on their collective shoulders from being rejected by the BDB, and their leader, Xcor, has a few issues of his own...
“You are perfect for a female."
"Not where I come from."
"Then they're using the wrong standard.”
"Yes. I am in love with him. And if you try to dissuade me by the fact that I have not lived yet enough to judge, I say unto you...fuck off.”
‘I love her so damn much, thats my heart right there. My woman.’
‘Word.’
The truth was, he loved her. Completely and forever. But that was the curse of all this for them both, he suspected.
She was a female who didn’t fit in anywhere, a warrior stuck within the tepid skin of a Chosen’s body
If Xcor needed some blood to tide him over, he would get it from this woman, or another.
She had the Bloodletter’s iron will not just in her face or her eyes or her body. It was in her soul.
This was more than just being alive. This was to live.
