World-renowned recording artist Krishna Das gives readers a rare treat: commentary, instruction, and a CD exploring the classic Hindu poem Hanuman Chaleesa.
I was standing on my balcony at my apartment in London looking across the sky line of canary wharf listening randomly to some music on Youtube. I came across a rendition of KD's Hanuman Chalisa and burst out into tears. This is when I truly connected with the message of Neem Karoli baba. I memorised the Hanuman Chalisa listening to this CD in 4 Days.
Chanting the Hanuman Chalisa is a common Kirtan experience. Learning the 40 verses is often a community practice. But ultimately, attempting it alone or with a group - memorizing it, learning the pronunciation, understanding the meaning, learning the melody, is a daunting goal. Having the devotion of Hanuman is one of the prerequisites for many.
Krishna Das is one of the first to bring call and response chanting to the West. His deep, booming, heartfelt, and almost morose chanting is iconic. This book is a wellspring of his intent and a gift to us all. Flow of Grace is about the singing the hymn Hanuman Chalisa, a song which praises Hanuman, a revered Hero in Hindu mythology, and invites this "knower of all hearts" to live eternally within us.
The book covers the story of Hanuman, why this chant, Maharaj-ji, the practice - but at the core are the lead in and 40 verses this is a followed up by the English translations. Although there are CDs, I usually just find a cover, or Krishna Das online. There's a slow version, like the CD, that's easy to find online. Sometimes I'll video the verses I'm working on to have handy. There are locals you can join in with as well, like Girish and Kat McMillan; Bhakti Breakfast Club and Sanghita Yoga teach the Krishna Das melody and I'm sure the world is full of support.
The colorful plates are entrancing, the quotes are inspiring and all to support our 'Entering into the Presence of the Powerful, Compassionate Being Known as Hanuman'.
At first I balked about the odd square shape, but discover that with the red cover make the book easier to find.
The format I read on my Kindle was intended for iPads, so things didn't look lovely. Still, a wonderful way to capture the spirit of the Hanuman Chalisa, with some lovely stories from Krishna Das's guru.
