Why Trey Let Me Get Away

Rate this book
Second chances are relationship Hail Marys. I'll either win Whitney's love or go home brokenhearted.

Whitney Savittieri is the one that got away, and I'll do anything—including strategizing with my teammates—to get her back.

Never mind that she's giving me the stiff arm and wants nothing to do with me. We're going head to head, and I'm playing for keeps.

I've been in a lot of pressure-packed games, but the stakes are higher this time—my heart and my happiness are on the line.

I'm avoiding my ex like the plague—like a really, really handsome plague.

While Trey's risen to fame in the NFL, my life has gone so far off track I've derailed and am careening into a ditch.

So I promised myself I'd never love again. It's too risky—a woman can only take so much disappointment.

Giving us another chance is a mistake my future and my heart can't afford.

Kortney graduated from the University of Utah with an English degree and spent a few years before motherhood teaching 7th and 8th graders how to write a book report, among other things. But after a reading slump, where no plots seemed to satisfy, Kortney pulled out her laptop and started writing the "perfect" love story...or at least she tried. Writing love stories is her job...just kidding. Her real job is taking care of her five awesome kids and spending time with her husband.

Kortney loves a good romance movie or book, warm chocolate chip cookies, and traveling the world.

Things I liked:
- Trey
- The hot wings scene 😂
- The football team giving Trey tips on winning Whitney back (reminded me of The Cheat Sheet)
- Bridgette
- Grandma Gia
- the physical chemistry between Trey and Whitney
- the good moments between Trey and Whitney

Things I didn’t like:
- Whitney. I could make a list of why she didn’t sit well with me but I’ll focus on a major issue I had. It’s spoiler related and is labeled in a separate section below.

I love Kortney’s other books so much. Her writing has been a favorite in the past for me. The “com” series is a wonderful place to go for great rom coms with a lot of depth. This book works for many people, but didn’t work for me. If you don’t mind books with problematic or unlikeable characters- you will probably really enjoy this one. I typically don’t connect well with books when I feel like a character has very little to no redeeming qualities, so this one was a struggle for me.

Spoilers:
The moment that Whitney decided to yell, scream, and shove Trey for literally no good reason, was her moment to shine in apologies because it was very very bad. She can feel whatever she wants but her way of communicating it was out of line. Further, her apology was a bunch of excuses, and her making light of her terrible behavior and terrible actions with jokes/teasing. She did not fully apologize (in my opinion) and she never blatantly acknowledged or apologized for physically shoving him. I’m not trying to be that person, but if it was a man who did that to a woman, it would be completely unacceptable, so I find it equally unacceptable for her to treat Trey in this way.

In her defense- I don’t think a genuine apology would have done much for me, because I was so done with her at this point, but because of her terrible apology on top of her terrible behavior, I could not ever support her with Trey. She tells him “Maybe you make me do crazy things that I normally wouldn’t do with anyone else like be mean and scream and yell”. This is the biggest red flag out there, and it’s supposed to be considered cute.

The things she thinks and does feel very mean girl for me. She minimizes Trey’s struggles which really bugs me. I don’t need perfect characters but I do want to feel like the couple will actually be happy together and make it. And I wanted someone who will treat Trey as good as he treats her. Whitney was not it.

🤔🧐🤯MY THOUGHTS:🤯🧐🤔

I’m so happy things worked out for Trey. He deserves everything he wants, even if that means Whitney. I personally wish he could’ve found someone better. Whitney is a piece of work. She’s a nasty person. I get that she wants to be independent but to be jealous of the man she loves because he’s successful and she isn’t and to break up with him for that reason….🤬🤬🤬!!!

I don’t care if she did realize her mistake and blah, blah blah! She doesn’t deserve that second chance and to get such a great man out of the deal. Just No! While I did enjoy the story, I guess the way it inflamed my irritation with the main female character shows that her character development was great. 😅

I now need to find the sequel to this about Jenna, Trey’s sister.

RATING KEY:

🎭 Comedy/Tragedy- based on if I laughed or if there was a tragic event and how it affected me. I will mark the Masks with either a C or T to indicate Comedy or Tragedy
👻 Spooky/Creepy -based on if this had any occult or paranormal themes and if those elements creeped me out or gave me anxiety!

ALL THE STARS FOR TREY.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

This book was a good time and the lighter escapism read I was hoping for when it landed on my kindle. I LOVE sports romances and was ecstatic a closed door author I adore wrote one.

For the football aspects, I thought there was a perfect blend of Trey’s life and practices, games and such, but never so much to take over the point of the story, the romance. Easily one of the highlightable features of the plot. I have been missing football and this helped quench that!

I LOVED TREY. He was the shining beacon throughout the entire book. I loved how nervous he got trying to talk to Whitney. I loved how hard he worked for their relationship and the truly genuine good soul he has. He’s got that big golden retriever energy that never gets old to me. I want to soak up that optimism he holds on to so well.

Whitney was where I ran into issues. I was surprised at her reasoning for breaking up with Trey and how poorly it came off for her character growth. I understand some of her side of the story but I wish Whitney herself had put more effort into the relationship or at least apologizing in general.

In the end though, I loved this book. I needed something quick and enjoyable that made me laugh and grin and OH EM GEE I FORGOT TO MENTION THE KISSING SCENES. Absolutely the hottest thing about this book. Perfectly executed closed door romance kisses are my kryptonite and I was begging for them to kiss and THEY SURE DANG DID.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Sports Romance
- Language: very little
- Romance: kisses
- Trigger/Content Warnings: absent parents, divorce (mentioned)

I’ve enjoyed all of this author’s romantic comedies! This one is no exception. Trey is fire! The ultimate book boyfriend. The swagger, the confidence, the dimples, he’s got it going on! This grumpy/sunshine second Chance love story had me smiling for at least 90% of the book. I appreciate that the author doesn’t waste her plot on misunderstandings! Just when I think there’s going to be a misunderstanding there isn’t and I love that! I enjoyed the Alabama football references. My husband is a huge Bama fan. Even though I’m not very knowledgeable about football the author did a great job with it and it felt authentic. There’s a slow burn. I wanted to shake Whitney a few times! Trey’s patience with Whitney was off the charts, not realistic, but who cares. Fun and swoony from start to finish!

Trey. Star of The Story.

Trey. Star of this story, for sure. Whitney though? She wasn't nice. And I have a harder time with mean characters. She isn't mean to everyone though, just Trey. The nicest person ever. I didn't really get her justification for being mean. But, I loved the chemistry, the kissing (I had to wait for most of the story to get to this . . .) and the ending. Trey really made this book for me.

Another winner by Kourtney Keisel. I seriously feel like no matter the genre or trope she will nail it every time and this sports romance is no different.

I am generally not a fan of second chance romances but this one was so well done. We weren’t subjected to a million flashbacks, just given enough to establish their prior relationship and the past issues were resolved not skimmed over.

I absolutely loved the sweet softie that Trey was. From his appearance in Complete you knew he was going to be a genuinely great guy and he did not disappoint. I also loved Whitney. She was definitely an imperfect flawed character but I loved that about her. She had some genuine hang ups and could be downright miserable at times but she was also so caring and had so many great qualities of her own. These two definitely deserved to find their way back to each other.

It’s the cheat sheet. But better.

Amazing banter. Love a golden retriever MMC and the teams support. The FMC kind of bugged me sometimes but also their dialogue and inner dialogue killed me literally had me cracking up at times.

This was a fun dual POV, second chance, kissing only sports romance between a pro football player and an aspiring sports writer who broke up in high school and find themselves working together years later. I loved how Trey's teammates helped him try to get Witney back and that we got both perspectives as Trey tries to make Witney see they deserve a second chance. It was also great on audio and perfect for fans of authors like Emma St. Clair and Lyssa Kay Adams or books like The cheet sheet by Sarah Adams. I'm looking forward to reading book two in this new series by indie author Kortney Keisel!

I really enjoyed this second chance romance. And I can’t resist a good football story! It was pretty funny and absolutely adorable.

I loved Trey’s teammates and how they helped him get the girl back. It gave me strong Cheat Sheet vibes, so if you’ve read that one, I think you’ll like this one too!

I’m so very glad Trey got his story! I felt so bad for him after Complete that I crossed my fingers and sent all the mental telepathy vibes to Kortney and it worked!! Well, she probably had this planned out but, still, I definitely had some big hopes going on 😂 And let’s talk about what a great story it is! I loved the “second chance/ he falls first” plot lines mixed with the most wicked smart banter. This is Kortneys gift: to tell a fantastic story but in the most snappy, snarky and hilarious way possible, adding in the perfect amount of slow burn tension and complex conversation. Her books draw you in and make you sad when you get to the last page because you don’t want them to end. You just HAVE TO get this book on your TBR so you can enjoy it as much as I did. It’s amazing, I promise ❤️

I received a complimentary ARC of this story from the author via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

This book was super cute! It almost felt like a copy and paste of The Cheat Sheet, but I’m not mad about it lol. The male love interest got on my nerves at times and the story as a whole didn’t feel super original, but I enjoyed it. 4.25/5 ⭐️

This was my least favorite of Keisel’s works so far. While the banter was enjoyable and the second chance romance was fine, I felt this work had many problems in it that prevented me from enjoying it. I don’t think I necessarily dislike the book as a whole though so I’m giving it 3 stars as “this is fine, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless you have a specific interest in it.”

So let’s get to some of the things that just didn’t sit right with me.

First the night where Whitney has a blind date with a computer programmer and Trey comes in with his date. I had a personal problem with Keisel yet again using a nerdy man as a scapegoat to further her main characters’ relationship. She did it in Compared and it was WORSE here. We have a computer programmer (which she mentions like five times like it’s his personality) who is pleasant and nice but boring. Thanks? My husband is a software engineer and he’s the funniest and most charismatic person I know. People love him. He can befriend anyone. Personal feelings - but please I hope Keisel gets over this “nerd characters are boring” trope.

Now one more piece about the night as a whole. This night felt VERY out of place in the book because both MCs were out of character. We have Trey, supposed super nice guy EGG on Whitney’s date to eat super spicy food when it is legitimately causing him to feel sick. It is so genuinely MEAN that I was so upset by it. Then Whitney, who usually stands up for herself and others, just lets it go. Neither of them bring up this dick move ever again. And Trey goes on to be called “nice” many more times in the book.

So… moving on to the yacht trip. There is NO way that an Assisted Living Facility would allow a non-relation TAKE a patient without direct permission from the person who put them in there. Aka Whitney should have known that Trey was taking her and it should have been the facility who called her and told her. No “relying on grandma”. No sorry no.

And let’s talk about how Whitney, who yes is beautiful, fits into a MODEL’s clothing??? Is she suddenly a size 2? ❓❓❓

The football team was a bunch of names and zero personality. Didn’t get enough screen time for me to care about them.

Ultimately I didn’t like the conclusion either. The last like 20% just felt like…. Nothing? There was a whole bunch of talking which was great but then even after talking everything out, Whitney needed more time to decide. Yay, more waiting and drawing the book out….

It felt like Whitney’s feelings did a 180 SO fast that I got whiplash. I know that she hasn’t had any real issues with Trey’s success throughout the book…. But for her being so stubborn, it was weird to see her accept Trey’s marriage proposal. I wish Keisel had not included that epilogue. It actually took away from the story imo because Whitney had a bad experience in a marriage and it should have been much more of a long thought-out plan, not a whirlwind proposal. I hated that. I would have liked leaving the ending open.

So overall, I personally had a lot of issues with the book but the general concept was fine.

Well, wow!!! I purchased this ebook awhile back and then bought the audio version, too. This time around, I read the ebook, but I enjoyed the story so much, I will most likely listen to the audio book some time in the future.

This is the first novel that I have read by this author and it was even better than I thought it would be. I adore second chance romances and I have discovered these past couple of years that I am also a big fan of sports and celebrity themed stories. Well, this book definitely checks all of those boxes.

I really liked both of the main characters, even though it was hard to see Whitney have such a skewed focus and belief about herself, her life, and her decisions. However, that was part of her growth journey in this story. She had to learn more about herself and what was truly important to her.

Now, Trey...well he was pretty much everything you could ask for in a sports romance hero. He was devoted to Whitney, both in the past and in the present. I loved seeing him work to win her back, with some help from his friends. The emotions he went through were so vivid as the story played out and he was definitely someone who I could be happy for all of his successes in life and hope that he could finally win back the woman he had always loved.

I simply adored this story from start to finish and look forward to reading more of this author's novels.

When Whitney broke up with Trey almost 6 years ago, he had no clue why. Letting her go without a fight was the biggest regret of his life, but after seeing her again and finding out she’s divorced, he’s all in to win her back and never let her go.

I absolutely love this book! It’s one of those stories that I wanted to devour, but also savor each page!

Whitney is my favorite type of character—a woman who comes across as super strong, sassy, and independent, but has a heart of gold. The type of person who works two jobs so she can care for her sick grandmother when everyone else has bailed. A woman who is prickly with high walls to protect her wounded heart. She’s a complex character and I adored her!

Trey is a wealthy, famous NFL player who is humble, kind, and so likable. I love how he’ll do anything to get Whitney back after she repeatedly tells him it’s not happening, including getting matchmaking advice from his teammates.

You can expect:
🏈 second chance
🏈 sports romance
🏈 he falls first
🏈 slow burn
🏈 kissing only
🏈 fun sparring between MCs
🏈 grandma with no filter 💕
🏈 character growth
🏈 second first kiss that’s 🔥
🏈 HEA

The characters, storyline, humor, and romance were fantastic! This sweet and fun book is a solid 5 star read for me and one I highly recommend.

Many thanks to the author for an eARC of this gem! All opinions are my own.

You guys!! This book 🥺
It's an absolute treat for sports romance lovers and even sports lovers
Oh wow! Trey is determined 😂
Let me say that again because that's what he is and he's determined not only to win Whitney back but also Us 🤣 he's determined to be your heart melting book boyfriend and cry because he's not real .

What I loved :
🔹Inclusion of Trey's openness and honesty with his teammates, their support in Trey's efforts
🔹Grandma G is hilarious and she's all the encouragement I need .She can talk the talk 🤣
🔹Whitney's importance to stand for herself and not be damsel in distress
🔹I loved how Trey turned the point into allowing other people to love and care for her
🔹If you guys loved the consistent and sweet Trey, You stand no chance before angry Trey when he's fighting for their relationship.
🔹The pining and their first kiss , feels like I've been waiting forever for them to kiss 😜
🔹Whitney's issues are difficult to understand and love initially, I mean everyone has flaws and she's decided that because of her own reasons not to fall for a man again but When Trey understood her and said it's normal for everyone to feel differently let's talk and work on it , I'm a goner ... Melting puddle
🔹Usually in sports romances it's MMC that's portrayed with issues , I'm so glad that a FMC is portrayed with her imperfections and that Trey is trying to work through them with her 🥺😘
🔹Whitney's acceptance
🔹Ahh!! The final proposal 😭🥰🙌

One more mention is that, the first half goes a bit slow and it takes you time to understand both of them fully , and also there's a lot of sports anthology and terms , it took me time to understand them since I have literally zero football knowledge except that the players are hot 😆 but if you even know a slight bit of knowledge about it , you'll love every bit and boy !! You're in for a treat

Hope you'll enjoy this book as much as i have and I'm always here to talk about it !!! Literally waiting to chat about it 😁
So excited about this release ✨

A pro football player. A wannabe sports reporter. A golden retriever kind of a man. A salty/spicy/prickly woman. A second chance at love. A team of friends with ideas to win the girl over. All of this and more is what packages up this fun romcom.

I’ll be honest–Trey won me over from the very start with his eagerness, generosity, persistence and positive nature, but Whitney was a hard one to love, always pushing and shoving him away, and actually resisting his charms! Like who could do that?! It was difficult at first to cheer this couple on because of that. I kept waiting for Trey to just cut his losses and move on to someone who actually wants him, but that man is magical–oh, so magical. And let me just say, Whitney does have some redeeming qualities–she’s scrappy, determined and very independent.

Of course, there are reasons for Whitney’s heart of stone and I was aghast because they felt more like excuses, but by the end, I was completely invested and hoping Trey would find the deepest wish of his heart–a love and life together with his dream girl.

I loved how involved his teammates got in brainstorming ways for him to win her over; I loved Grandma G, as clueless as she was (goat needlepoint 😆); I loved every spark of chemistry and swoony connection; I loved the kisses in alllll the places; and new book boyfriend alert 🚨 I absolutely loved and adored Trey–he’s the whole entire heart and soul of this story.

Content/TW: divorced character; harmful parents; kissing/make outs

Let me just say, if you’re not a fan of football before you read this book, Kortney will definitely change your mind!! 😍😉

I was drawn into Trey and Whitney’s story and didn’t want it to end! I loved the twist on the MFC having the grumpier side for a change! It made it fun to see Trey break through her walls of defense she’d put up. (See my pun! Hehe!)

Trey was the sweetest thing!!! I loved his competitive, flirty banter with Whitney! It made for some interesting scenes! Whitney was stubborn and strong-willed, but truly wanted a HEA underneath it all!! Their chemistry was off the charts!!! You will need a fan after those kiss scenes, trust me! 😉

I LOVED Trey’s football brothers!!! They took the show whenever they were on the page! They had me rolling with their ideas for Trey to win Whitney back!

Things I Loved:
🏈Second Chances
🏈Grandma Gia!! (She had me rolling y’all!!)
🏈Death Wish Wings scene!!🔥🔥
The closet scenes! 😉
🏈The Offensive Player of the Week dating game plan!!
🏈The kiss in the weight room!!!!!🔥😍
🏈Whitney and Trey’s 3 rules! (And breaking them!)😉
🏈The Heisman trophy scene!
🏈The Epilogue!!

This book was full of flirting, laugh out loud moments, friendship and love!! If you love any of those, then don’t skip out on this one!!!

Thank you Kortney Keisel for my ARC copy!! All thoughts and opinions are my own!!!

This book fell pretty flat for me. Whitney started to get on my nerves with how in her own head she was. Too much in-depth discussion about football, players, positions, games, all the intricate details. I think I just don't like sports romances.

Overall it was fine, but I did have a serious issue with a trope that Keisel has now used twice to my knowledge. In Complete and this book, there's a nerdy throwaway character who's only personality trait is their nerdom. However, Trey's only personality is football and he's seen as the hottest, most interesting person. Not saying there's anything wrong with being who you are but I seriously hate throwaway nerds who are so flat you know they're just there as an unrealistic partner match to show how much better the MMC is.

I like Keisel's work but this one just wasn't it for me.

Great chemistry, but the heroine takes forever to change her mind

I thought this was a cute second chance romance, but the heroine was all over the place. While I could understand her poor decisions and her desire to not make them again, she kind of drove me nuts with her indecision and desire to blame. I do normally love sports romances, but this was not a favorite. I did love Grandma Gia. She was a fun character. I also liked the approach of getting the offensive MVPs of the week to provide dating tips. It was kind of a fun approach to "team". And there was some good chemistry.

Content: Kissing only with a little innuendo. Triggers with failed marriage and debt and losing yourself in your decisions.

Absolutely Adorable!

This story was a delight from start to finish. I loved how Trey and Whitney originally bonded over football, and how it brought them back together again.

I especially loved Trey’s teammates and their plans to help him win his girl back. Their plans were great and well executed by Trey.

This book made me laugh and smile! I look forward to seeing more of these characters in the rest of the series.

I always enjoy Kourtney’s books and this was no exception. Trey is an absolute dream boat but maybe too perfect. But Whitney is so mean to him, and not for good reasons, in my opinion. Trey is amazing and his friendships with his team are fun. Some good funny moments and one swoon worthy man make for a cute rom com.

Ahhh I loved this book!
I absolutely fell for Trey in Complete when he was just a side character. He was so sweet and down to earth for being such a famous player. And I loved him even more in his book.
Did I want to shake Whitney for half the book? Yes. But I did love her too. She’s been through a lot and I understood why she didn’t want to trust a guy again, but I did want to yell at her to stop pushing Trey away because he loves her so much and would never stop her from achieving her dreams.

If you’re a fan of The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams I think you’ll really enjoy this. Both feature a football player with a golden retriever personality, who will do anything for his girl. And who’s friands make a football themed game plan to help them win their girls over.

This whole book was adorable. Trey’s teammates working together to help him when her back?!? Trey, the big flirt/lady’s man, becoming an absolute mess every time Whitney was nearby?! Grandma G! Whitney’s grandma was the best and I loved her and Trey’s relationship and her telling Whitney to get it together lol.

This was such a fun read! I always fly through Kortney Keisels books and can’t wait for Jenna’s story next!

TREY: "“I just have one question.” I turn to Coach Murphy. “How long do I have to do what you guys say?” “Until she’s yours.” “What if she never ends up being mine?” “Then she’s an idiot,” Westin says.....With the Buccaneers’s offensive team in my corner, Whitney’s heart doesn’t stand a chance."

WHITNEY: "...all I can think about as I gather my stuff and leave his house is how much I wish Trey would’ve just kissed me, obliterated my lines without me having to make the choice myself. Because if I’m left in charge, eventually, my mind will gain control of my heart."

Oh my heart! After reading the "Sweet rom-com" series by Kortney Keisel, particularly the last book which is where we meet Trey and Jenna Lewis, I'm soooooooloo glad Kortney Keisel did a story on Trey and Jenna because I absolutely LOVED this one more! Trey is just a major heartthrob inside and out and I loved his and Whitney's story. Now I'm excited for Jenna's story when I get to it after I finish another book or two I'm already on 😅🤷‍♀️

Oh, one side note: one other character I was getting a kick out of even though she wasn't in it as much as Whitney's grandma 😆😆😆 if you've read this book, you'll know why I have to give her a shoutout. Best grandma ever.

The. CUTEST!!

I was so excited for this new book to be released and it totally lived up to my expectations!! I COULD NOT put it down!

Trey and Whitney were the cutest! I loved the flashbacks showing how they met and the history that they shared! It was fun to get a glimpse into their past, while also being a part of their current story.

I loved the chemistry between these two, their banter, and how Trey could get under Whitney’s skin—in the best way possible! Trey’s charm and Whiney’s attempts at resisting him had me grinning from ear to ear!

The side characters were awesome, too! Grandma Gia was so funny! I loved how she could see just what Whitney really wanted and needed and kept me laughing at her antics! And, of course, Trey’s team helping him Whitney over was adorable!

This book is a MUST read!

Congrats, Kortney on another amazing book! Thanks for sharing your talents with us! ❤️
