This has definitely been my favourite book in the series so far. Everything just seemed to be a bit better with this one: the emotions, the crimes, the flashbacks, it all had me on my toes.
The book ended once again on a big cliff-hanger, so I am damn excited to read the next and final book. I hope it’ll all end on a big bang rather than go out with a meek sizzle. So, here’s to hoping that town burns completely to the ground, but without Lana going down with it.

I find that I’m not a big fan of the romance in this series: it’s kind of leaving me cold. The characters are also kind of under-developed, especially on an emotional level. Really, I’m more interested in the mystery and thriller side of this story. I just really want to see how it all ends and what all the details are when it comes to that town’s weird mysterious past.
If there is one emotion I feel the most while reading this, it’s pure disgust for that religious town with its creepy Christian cult mentality. They breed monsters there, seriously. I can’t wait to see them all be brought down.

Ooohh I'm really starting to get into this! This one picked up right where The Risk left off and also ended on a cliff-hanger, which makes me desperate to read the next book and basically the entire series, because I really need to know how all this ends!
This story definitely captivates me, not so much due to an emotional attachment, but more so by stirring up a lot of curiosity and adrenaline. Everything is so fast-paced, yet interesting, and I just can't get enough of it.

Well.. this is definitely something different. This book takes on the interesting task of mixing a romance contemporary with a thriller by having the female main character be a serial killer with a mysterious and heart-wrenching past. I found it to be very intriguing and well-executed for the most part.
It's surely showing potential as the first book of a series: I'm hooked and very eager to see everything get pieced together. I am also very excited to see the resolution to Lana/Victoria's revenge and to find out what Logan's reaction will be to it all.
I wonder if this plotline will stretch through the entire series or if some of the later books will contain new characters and stories. I actually wouldn't mind if it turns out that S.T. Abby used all five book to really tell this particular story in depth. Anyway, since this book ended in the middle of the story and with a cliff-hanger, I'm at least sure Sidetracked will continue where the first book left off. And I honestly can't wait!
Oh, and I would also just like to add that Lana is a bad-ass and I might like her a bit too much seeing she’s a serial killer and all. Not that I feel any remorse for her victims of course. They deserve death and I was 100% rooting for Lana to remain the strong woman she is and succeed in killing them all one by one. I’d love it if this series ends with Logan joining in on her avenging angel scheme.

My opinions here are a bit mixed. On the one hand, I did enjoy this book, but I also found it surprisingly underwhelming.
Something that bugged me was that the relationship between Nico and Elena definitely felt more like ‘lust’ than 'love' for a very long time. I only began to see the love more towards the end, but by that point the tension had almost completely disappeared, so I wasn’t even sure which phase I preferred: The tension or the love? I wish there had been more of a mix of both of those things at the same time. That's definitely something I felt was missing for me.
I do have to admit that I loved Nico’s possessiveness. It was so poignant and intense. He was so greedy when it came to Elena’s attentions; not wanting to share her physically but also not emotionally. He wanted her to love nobody but him: past, present or future. Which is, of course, not exactly healthy, but… it’s just hot in books okay! My feminism and morals can sometimes simply fly right out the window, allowing me to merely enjoy the ride.
Nonetheless, I did need Elena to be a little tougher, stand up for herself and push back more. I feel like she was far too much of a doormat, especially when it came to her relationship with Nico. She let him get away with everything. He never had to grovel or anything close to that. I was honestly waiting for it to happen at some point, but it never came. Quite disappointing.
Now, when it comes to Nico, I really needed more from him in general. We hardly ever got to read from his POV, and even then, he rarely seemed to show us his emotions or inner thoughts at the beginning. Near the end, he opened up more, though. Anyway, I truly think this book would have been so much better if the POV had been split fifty-fifty between Nico and Elena: more interesting, more swoon-worthy, more everything that made this book enjoyable.
Honestly, the thing I hated most, was the constant miscommunication happening in this book: Elena thought Nico didn’t really want her and was still sleeping with other women, while Nico thought Elena was in love with another man. This resulted in both of them remaining completely closed off towards the other. Meanwhile, in reality, both were only into each other and no one else. A simple conversation could have cleared everything up between these two and it was annoying when this didn’t happen for the length of almost the entire book. Frustration definitely bubbled up inside of me.
Long story short, this book was enjoyable, but flawed in multiple ways. I wouldn't say anything about this story was done perfectly, but most of it was done adequately enough for it to be an okay read.
I didn't regret reading this, and I actually think the chances are high of me picking up the sequel. Hopefully the things I think could be improved will be done better in the next book!
After all, I can see a lot of potential with this series: the mafia dynamic, the family ties, the characters, the possessiveness/jealousies, the writing-style. It all truly has very high potential. It just needs a little more depth when it comes to the romance and everything would be great!

I read this book as if I were participating in some sort of sprint. I turned those pages quickly and without stop. I was invested and needed to know the ending. I think it is mostly the mystery itself that you want to see unfold: you want to understand how it is all being done. And you want to know it as soon as possible, not wanting to wait 'til the end.. but you must: hence the unavoidable quick and non-stop turning of pages.
Everyone involved in the story was really quite interesting and had their own unique characteristics. None were particularly likable, but I did have a bit of a soft spot for one of them, which is funny since I think he was meant to be the one we were mostly led to believe to be the murderer. I, however, never thought this to be the case, and oddly enough, I found him to be quite.. funny and charming. I had begun to form this idle kind of hope to see him survive, yet he unfortunately did die and by the hands of the girl I kind of 'shipped' him with, no less. No happy ending for me.. nor them I suppose.
I must admit that I did have my suspicions for one person quite fast (which in the end turned out to be correct), as in my opinion only one of the ten was truly creepy and appeared to portray some sociopathic tendencies mixed with a lot of narcissism. I won't spoil who the killer was of course, and I won't pretend like I was sure of this person's guilt at all, it was just a gut feeling. Besides, although I had this gut feeling about the identity of the murderer, how the crimes themselves were actually committed I had absolutely not a clue until they were spelled it out for us in the epilogue. I'm not sure if I find the explanation quite satisfactory as it does lean towards the fantastical, but, although I feel like there must have been quite a few coincidences and luck on the murderer's side, I do suppose this explanation accounts for everything that has happened in the story and is, with a far stretch of the imagination, plausible. And you know, for novels like this, it doesn't need to be realistic. As long as the events described can indeed happen, no matter how improbable, the novel has done its job. Especially if it entices you completely like this mystery certainly does. Very well done....more

Hell no. I can handle my cheesy romance novels like no other, but this was just horrifyingly bad. It had me on the verge of screaming and ripping my hair out with utter annoyance and pure disgust. Seriously, it was that bad.
The writing made me want to gauge my own eyes out, the plot was paper thin, the pacing of the story had me completely unnerved, the characters lacked any form of depth and the romance made me cringe more than anything I think I have ever experienced.
To be completely frank, not only is the stupidity through the roof with this entire novel, the main guy of the story also really really really creeps me out. If I were Eden, I’d be scared out of my mind and freaking run! But of course she lacks the brain capacity to come to that obvious conclusion, so instead we are stuck with this so called romantic story, which would actually work way better were it presented as a thriller about some stalking, kidnapping rapist....more

This story shows an obviously deranged man after having just killed someone and who is now trying to convince us (the readers), or perhaps even himself, that he is not crazy. The man claims that he is merely extraordinarily evolved in his senses. Of course we learn more with each sentence that this guy is anything but sane, no matter how much he likes to believe otherwise, and we see him reach his boiling point to eventually committing his crime and later fessing up to it. The question that lingers, however, is: was it guilt that made his crazy pop out again in the end or was it just that: crazy? Who knows....more

This short story is a depiction of ‘the perfect crime’ where a woman kills her husband without any preparations. Everything she does is done in the heat of the moment, and yet she is able to execute it perfectly. Aside from the details of the crime itself, which I will not discuss due to ‘spoilers’, I also find it interesting to consider the woman’s psyche. She’s quite difficult to read as her behaviour sends out a lot of mixed signals, and I am still not sure if she was a bad person, maybe even a sociopath, or if she had only gone crazy in the moment due to being in shock. The human mind is baffling....more
