I often have a hard time with heavy dialects in narrations, and one of the characters in this story has a dialect which was to be often extremely hard to even understand. But it worked! Different from what I usually feel, this just strengthen the already solid authentic feeling, and though I several times had to stop and jump some seconds back foe this reason, I found myself really enjoying it and learned to understand it continuingly better.
I like the story very much, but it was a bit too confusing at times. I realise most of it was intended, but I did feel a part wasn't completely as it was intended.
I had many ideas of how the story might develop while going forward, most of them didn't go as I thought it might, and some was more obvious, but the balance between the predictable and the unpredictable was held fine.
I could have wished for the story to be fleshed more out, but taking into mind it's a shorter novel, I think the author really spend the pages well.
A tiny semi-spoiler... ... ... ... I actually expected the story to be much more an unreliable narrator than it actually was. I'm not sure if I would have preferred it to be, because the way it was unsure all the way through kinda did the same as if it had been ...more

I'm not proud of even suggesting this; but I honestly have a hard time convincing myself that Mr. Masterton wrote this one himself. I have loved several of his works which have a general mediocre rating, so that doesn't scare me from diving I to his novels. But this one is truly terrible written. Masterton often writes stories where a synopsis would sound silly (just think of Ghost Virus, The Children God Forgot, the Heirloom to take some examples which all of them I have loved), so I know that Masterton have a way to convey a far fetched plot and alternative takes on many tropes, but he can pull it off because is is a great writer. This story is not written by a great writer. It just doesn't makes sense!
To be completely honest, the story is written as it was intended for a preteen audience, but the content is absolutely nothing you would present to a preteen. There's brutal violence, killings, rape in the rather extreme category, and still the plot is so far fetched, unbelievable, moving forward in a way which makes the most epic fantasy story seem more likely to happen in real life. The dialogues and the interactions between the characters are even more far fetched unauthentic.
It's one thing to suspend disbelief ... But when it's the characters dialogues you need to suspend disbelief about it's really really bad....more
