I cannot continue supporting this author after reading this book. The set up to the murder centres around the discussion of a book club book. Written by this author under her pen name Avery Aames. It’s so off-putting, I couldn’t finish the rest of the book. I know authors have to hustle to sell books but this crosses a line for me.

This author is using descriptors and turns of phrase I would expect to see in a book from 10-15 years ago. It’s clumsy and cliche. I expect better.

I didn’t need to know the minute details of a summer camping trip in the early 90s to understand that BTK masqueraded as a good father for decades. I wanted to hear about the process of reconciling the father and the serial killer. That’s why I wanted to read this book. However, I don’t need the author’s entire life story to get there.

I don’t relate to any of the experiences that are supposed to be my ‘everyday enchantments’. This is a book for a very small subset of people. It’s far too specific to include anyone outside of that subset, which defeats the purpose of a book like this. Also, throwing around Coyote in a non-Indigenous context is very problematic.

His belly jutted over his jeans like an oversized water balloon.” This is supposedly a character that is well liked and let the author is using such fatphobic and shaming terms to describe him.
