In The Cake Therapist by Judith Fertig, pastry chef, Neely returns to her hometown to open a bakery. She has a special gift where she is able to taste a flavor that reveals emotions of her customers and friends. Told from two points of view, in two different timelines, Fertig magically weaves together the lives of characters, which culminate in a beautiful story. I loved this tale, the characters, and how the plot was revealed through each characters’ actions. Although The Cake Therapist has a lovely aspect of yummy and delightfully sounding treats, there are some heavier subjects addressed in the narrative. If you love great storytelling, you’ll want to give this book a read. Highly recommended.

There are recipes all throughout the book of various foods and sweet treats that are featured in the story. Hannah owns a Bake shop/cafe and is the main character and amateur sleuth. Fluke’s side characters are likable and add extra charm to the storyline. I also appreciate the fact that, although there is a murder mystery to solve and the investigation and sleuthing are the plot, Fluke incorporates cozy side stories. In Key Lime Murder Hannah’s cat has a problem and the side characters all attempt to help. If you’re looking to read a cozy mystery series and are a foodie, I recommend the Hannah Swensen series. I searched for a copy of this childhood favorite and found one for my current, Socks for Supper by Jack Kent is a 1978 Parents’ Magazine publication. I searched for a copy of this childhood favorite and found one for my current, personal collection (I don’t know what happened to my childhood copy). If you are familiar with Kent’s other work, you will recognize his artwork in his illustration style. The characters have his signature, cartoon-like appearance and the art is done in a spare, mostly primary color palette. Socks for Supper is a sweet story about an old man and his wife. They only grow turnips and eventually wish for something different to eat. His wife has the idea to unravel the old man’s sweater, a little at a time to knit pairs of socks to trade a neighbor for milk and cheese. Eventually, the man’s sweater is totally unraveled and is gone. Readers are so surprised and tickled to discover how the tale ends. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to read this vintage children’s book, you will definitely want to find a copy! Socks for Supper by Jack Kent is am endearing, nostalgic read for me! ...more

Illustrations add an additional layer of coziness to this delightful story of food and family. The back matter includes a yummy, macaroni and cheese recipe and important author and illustrator notes. I highly recommend Soul Food Sunday. It is an especially good read aloud when discussing family and the traditions we share that are centered around food. I learned to make some cherished recipes from my own grandmother. She lives on in the family each time I recreate one of her special creations. I enjoyed reading the first installment of Joanne Fluke’s first book in the Hannah Swenson series, The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder. In it, we meet HaI enjoyed reading the first installment of Joanne Fluke’s first book in the Hannah Swenson series, The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder. In it, we meet Hannah Swensen, the owner/baker of the bakery, The Cookie Jar, located in the town of Lake Eden. When a local man, and friend of Hannah’s, is found dead, with Hannah’s famous chocolate chip cookies scattered around him, she is shocked and determined to help find his killer. I love the cozy vibes of this mystery and its side focus on the yummy treats that Hannah bakes and gives to others as a thank you and as an offering of comfort. I will definitely be reading more from this series of cozy mysteries....more

Oh, I loved this book for so many reasons. Not only was it a great romance, but I loved the representation of a main character dealing with chronic paOh, I loved this book for so many reasons. Not only was it a great romance, but I loved the representation of a main character dealing with chronic pain. Told in alternating perspectives between Avital and Ethan, who develop and grow in Their own right as well as a couple. The plot line was propelling and had just the right amount of anticipation. I was smitten with the baking and delicious sounding baked goods that were such a yummy part of the book. If you are looking to read about a character who deals with chronic pain, family drama, and a beautiful story of love and romance, then Kissing Kosher is the book for you. I can’t wait for the next book in The Pies Before Guys Mystery series. I loved the main character, Daisy with her pie truck, retro dresses, her magic, and of course, her pie baking! I also loved the side characters. The plot progressed in a way that I didn’t expect and it was so much different than other cozy mysteries that I’ve read before. I love food and preparing new recipes, as well as trying new and favorite restaurants. Reading The Secret History of Food informed me about exactly that. I found the secrets that were revealed to be both fascinating and often repulsive. The book also revealed information about the modern day food industry, again information that is disturbing to this food lover. Lucky for me I do not consume meat or seafood. I enjoyed Siegel,s writing style and ultimately am glad that I read his book. I am thoughtful about the food that I eat but after reading The Secret History of Food, I am now even more discerning about my diet. ...more
