It’s Middle Grade Fantasy where our Chosen One is a teenager who learns he is the son of a Norse god, and therefore a demigod himself. He finds himself on an epic quest, and the resulting story is filled to the brim with action. It’s also FUNNY.
I haven’t read any of Riordan’s other work (I started the first Percy Jackson book but then just got sidetracked and never wound up finishing it), so I can’t speak to whether or not this is just too similar to that, but judging it by itself, Magnus is a good fun read for younger audiences, and fairly decent for adults, too....more

I just wasn't super into it for the first half or so, but then I came to really appreciate the interactions and relationships among the main POV character, Pen, and Violet. It's the characters that really made this one sing for me!
