Ms. Jenkins has a way of creating compelling characters that I wish to check up on and spend time with. I can see the appeal given this series has so many installments.
While I love these novels, they are a wee-bit heavy on respectability politics, a tad bit strong on xtian themes when I prefer lighter themes, a bit fat phobic, and a bit homophobic, though a gay characters exist.
The charm of this wholesome town is perfect in so many ways. I'd move there and see Ms. Bernadine about helping the town be less of all the above. ...more

This is, first and foremost, a domestic thriller. It has many twists and reveals all well handled and shocking. This also is a family drama dealing with cross-cultural marriages, parental expectations, generational differences, the legacy of slavery amongst the Diaspora, and within modern-day Nigeria. I love novels set in modern day West Africa written by Black folks. I prefer those written by Nigerians whether living abroad or not. It has set in me a longing to visit Nigeria. I've known and even dated a Nigerian here. Beautiful culture with some fucked up colonial views of Black folks across the Diaspora. White Supremacy has fucked us all up, lateral oppression everywhere amongst Black folks, on the continent and across the Diaspora....more

2021 Reread: I love what this book offers. Its not a direct continuation of Lilith's story but it allows you to see what she became and the family she builds with her Oankali mates. Akin is charming and one of my favorite characters of Butler's. This book deals with a fatal contradiction that I agree with Butler in many ways feels like its human nature. I don't agree thats our nature though. I think the last almost 600 yrs of brutality has been confused for human nature. I don't agree that white supremacy is human nature. I don't even think its a natural state for white folks. So I think this contradiction can be overcome with a honest look at who we actually are rather than the lies we ymtell ourselves. Still I would stick with the Oankali. I find the idea fascinating and always have.
Review from 2020 reread: This is every bit as good as I remember. This book picks up decades after Dawn and features the first human-born male Construct. I loved Akin and his adventures. He's right about a human Akjai. We probably will destroy it but we deserve the chance. Personally I wouldn't go but I'd be more peaceful knowing humanity was continuing unaltered somewhere far away from my descendants....more

Original review: I fucking loved this! This reminded me loosely of Legendborn by Tracy Deonn in that it features Black folks in white spaces using African Traditional Religion. This features the Fae, the Orisha, Will Shakespeare and many historical actors who worked with him in The King's Men acting troupe. I did not like the narrator and I found my mind wandering a bit but I also bought the ebook and used both. This is clearly the beginning of a series and I am SO ready for book 2!...more

I don't think the author understands fully that racism can't be mitigated until white supremacy is destroyed. The author is a liberal and what's required in this situation is an abolitionist....more
