One star ofExcellent read, well written, I get so happy immersed in her dialogue and character interactions. I literally just love Audrain’s writing. One star off because I was non-plused by the ending, it seemed to lose steam and all of the tangle amounted to not quite as much as I had hoped it would. But leading up to that, was a 5/5 read!...more

The last 25% was much better and caught my interest but I felt that there were a few issues. There was too much going on in this book, the characters and their relationships, all of their backstories and all being told at once was a lot. I had a difficult time keeping the different friends distinguished, I knew who each one was but their characters blended into each other, I never felt they were fully formed although they were supposed to be. I felt like maybe the author tried to touch on so many current issues and maybe should have picked one or two and then done another couple in the next book? I unfortunately wasn’t surprised by the twists. For me it read more drama than thriller. I don’t regret finishing but not a fave....more

Well, for Shiloh, a lot of not great things, every one of them unexpected and I was impressed that she didn’t pack it in!
Shiloh hasn’t been home in 15 years, not once, but has cashed in all of her savings and quit her job to return to her childhood home and turn the farm around. One thing I noticed quickly was that everyone is mean to her, even her Dad, and like unreasonably mean. I know that the townspeople were supposed to be gossipy and singularly minded but I felt like this cozy was missing some coziness! The relationship with her Dad was not what I’m used to in a cozy either, they barely had any connection and I just felt kind of lousy for her. The plot took a long time to develop and there was a lot of her mowing the lawn, I think I was getting more stressed about her fixing up the farm then I was about the murder mystery. This mystery is a bit slow going but picks up midway through and I was more engaged.
I would have like more resolution at the end, we were left with a big chunk of the plot left as a cliffhanger and I am still stressed about the farm chores lol!
The shining star of the story was her pug Huckleberry, he was adorable!
Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the ARC, this book publishes on Feb 23rd!...more

Take a trip with Elin to the Swiss Alps for her estranged brother’s engagement celebration, staying at a 5 star hotel, converted from an old Sanatorium.
What could go wrong?? Well, Elin has some severe anxiety issues, is a Police detective on leave, is wanting to confront her brother over their estrangement and besides all of that, there is a killer on the loose and he is picking people off one by one. Oh also, they get completely isolated by weather/avalanches and Elin is handling the scene.. so lots could go wrong and I loved it, couldn’t put this one down!
It helped that I read this while storms raged outside blanketing us with feet of snow and branches banged on the windows. This book hit a lot of my terror points and I just wanted to sit on Elin’s feet and make her stop investigating!!
Not sure if I was being clueless but I literally went through every character trying to figure out the killer and was constantly wrong, again love that!
Side note, I grew up with a Sanatorium behind my house that had been turned into a hospital, it was never scary but was celebrated for it’s work in saving so many lives so I instead pictured this as the old Psychiatric hospital in my area, if they built a 10 star hotel in its place, I would not stay, let alone be part of a locked room mystery there!
I +++ recommend that if you love gothic, atmospheric mysteries with a touch of horror, grab this up as fast as you can and see what happened at the Sanatorium...more
