I will not love this book as much as the gorgeous series from AMC, but it was nonetheless interesting to read; Rice has a very good, addictive style. The series is more like a fan fiction based on the book + I liked the movie with Pitt and Cruise in it’s time, but it didn’t leave me anything (the film also has discrepancies from the book, but not as serious as in the show); I think this is the main reason why I want to continue Vampire Chronicles; I would like to understand the author’s vision directly....more

(ну и пример!)...more

...more

(hide spoiler)]

[image]
Ротфусс, be serious.
Shame on you, автор.

Do not think, here you can also find a new things, including absolute theories, not confirmed by anything, curious, but still this is just a drop in the ocean.
A very simple book, for real fans, there are always few lovers and a desire to know everything to the smallest detail.
The main advantage of this encyclopedia is the approval of the author himself, albeit with publicity that much should not be taken for truth.
Herbert's son calls this book a fanfiction, which sounds ridiculous, it's funny that he himself, together with a co-author, has been writing those same fanfiction for years, squeezing all the juice out of Dune. I guess how many notes Herbert had to leave before his death so that his son would not starve :)

“It’s because there’s no more Dune that there are no more Fremen,” Leto said.
Unfortunately, this part disappointed me. Very strongly, in truth, because I had very high expectations. I was scared by people (yes, yes, SCARED) by the fact that this part is the most philosophical, confusing and strange; I was really looking forward to a new portion of philosophy from Herbert, I prepared all my stickers, highlighters, notepads for notes, so that I could work well with this book. Not to say, of course, that I didn’t take anything out of here for myself at all, but you know, inflated expectations played a significant role.
Perhaps the main reason for my disappointment was the lack of those topics that Herbert had previously brought to the fore. I consider ecology, not messianism, to be the main theme of the Dune cycle, and while reading God Emperor, I was slightly depressed by the fact that here the theme of ecology is much less than in previous parts.
Immediately I will say that this is not a minus, this is just a hitch for me. This novel explores a different topic, a good one, albeit not quite interesting for me (in my purely subjective opinion, the central issue of Emperor is not new, and has already been touched upon in previous books no less expressively).
This part of the Dune feels like something alien, and if the author had not repeatedly sent the reader to the past, had not mentioned already familiar names/events, then I would have had a strong feeling that I was reading a completely different book. In fact, that's the way it is. Arrakis is no longer the same, now it is the same paradise that the ancient Fremen aspired to: forests, rivers, cities, cars, flora of various kinds; and only a piece of desert, which refers to the past of the planet. I list it all here, in a review, and again I feel sad, to say nothing about the process of reading story.
All of the above, I do not rank as the minuses of the book, I only outline the differences between the fourth part of the cycle and the three previous works of the author.
This book is not philosophical. How much people who already knew the book frightened me with this word, and how much they, in my opinion, were mistaken. Here philosophy is in the same portion as before, I do not understand such a sharp contrast in people's opinions. God Emperor of Dune is more of a puzzle, monotony, boredom, loneliness.
Among the expressive qualities of the novel, only the main figure is Leto Atreides II, while the other characters presented here fade against his background, merge at the end, and in general, you don’t feel anything other than a skeletons with a set of actions, alas, although there are curious lines that Herbert could develop better.
There are three times more dialogues in this part (I can be wrong, but it seemed to me that way). Even before that, the author was not particularly distinguished by clear descriptions, but here it’s straight dialogue on dialogue, and they all look like English small talk about the weather, for example. The characters are talking, talking, talking, but at the same time everything is marking time.
The original Dune is a book about a path of a hero; its sequel, Dune Messiah, is a dispelling of the hero's triumph; the third part, Children of Dune is a revision and accounting for the mistakes of the past; Well, I can’t briefly describe the fourth novel, hence the conclusion from me personally that the book is not clear what it is about.
I will continue to read the cycle, of course, not that this part would directly push me away from the Duneverse, but some sediment will now remain. I think if it were not for my sentimental feelings for Arrakis and personal preferences regarding the topics raised, then the impressions would be better, but so I quietly leave to cry for the old days with the Fremen, Paul, Jessica, Harkonnens, Stilgar, Irulan (none of you will not meet these characters here anymore, so be ready for a complete restart!).
