His widow's description of the end of her husband's life was brutally honest, as were her feelings of grief and loss. The book is well written, and the story is absorbing, but everyone talks about it like it's some incredible book that will reset autobiographies forever. Good news bad news: The good news is the recipes are interesting, tasty and stupid simple to make. Bad news: the author isn't a trained chef, there is an endorsement by Suzanne Somers (seriously?) and the writing style is very much like the books by Rachael Ray. Breezy, cheery,endless reminders that this or that recipe will thrill your kids, your neighbors, your spouse..blah blah blah.
Each page features an entire recipe, and there are plenty of pictures, so the format is easy to follow and easy to read. This isn't gourmet cooking but it is family friendly and if you dislike the more expensive formal cookbooks, try this one....more

This collection of some of their most popular recipes is great fun to read. The book bubbles over with encouragement and enthusiasm. The recipes themselves are interesting and they cover everything from traditional American snacks (fried cheese sticks, deviled eggs) to more exotic recipes from faraway lands. This book is a hardback but it's small so it's easy to keep in the kitchen or tote to the grocery store. There are plenty of photographs and the recipes are easy to follow.
The writing makes you want to go into the kitchen and try new things without fearing mistakes. This isn't Martha Stewart, folks. If your chocolate frosting isn't exactly like the professional chefs make, nobody is going to care as they gobble down your cake and ask for seconds. This book encourages you to have fun, enjoy cooking and share the fun with your friends. And imo, that's what good cooking is all about....more

The writing is excellent, the ingredients clearly listed, and the photos are gorgeous. The overwhelming majority of recipes use a skillet but there is a good bread recipe that uses a Dutch oven. Not all the recipes are traditional southern. There is a recipe for chili and another one for fajitas but that's okay. Breakfast recipes are included and main meals and of course dessert. The recipes all use traditional plain cast iron but I'm sure you could use enameled cast iron as well. There is a chapter on the care and maintenance of cast iron and an interesting bit of cast iron history is also included. Highly recommended for anyone who would like to try some cast iron cooking....more
