I was definitely excited to read this book, and it didn’t disappoint. My only issue (and this is 100% me) is that I barely remembered any of the characters since it’s been a year and a half since I started the series.
Gretchen Winthrop works tirelessly as an immigration attorney, trying to do her best for her clients, while Colton Wheeler is a famous country music star. After hooking up at Colton’s friend’s wedding, Gretchen has done her best to put Colton out of her mind. But he’s gotten under her skin, and when they meet again, sparks begin to fly. The problem is, Gretchen’s family has neglected her so badly that she doesn’t really think she’s deserving of love, or even that she’s capable of giving it. Colton decides to do his best to make Gretchen experience the magic of Christmas, hoping it will thaw her icy heart.
I really enjoyed the references back to “A Christmas Carol” throughout the book, though I admit I was imagining the Muppets version since that’s my favorite. I didn’t care for the inclusion of a couple of chapters of the book Colton gave Gretchen to read; when the first chapter arrives, it felt very jarring, and I wasn’t sure what I was reading until it dawned on me that it was another romance novel. I think Adams has done the same in earlier books, but this time it just didn’t work.
I’m still loving the idea of a group of guys getting together to read romance novels. I also love that Colton’s friends are so close to one another. Usually in a romance novel we see the female MC dish about her feelings to her girlfriends, but here we get that with this close-knit group of guys. It’s so refreshing to read a novel where the men are comfortable with an entire range of feelings, and who discuss and share with one another the emotions they’re experiencing. I’m all for more of this.
This is definitely a really excellent novel, and I really hope Adams somehow continues on this series. It’s one of my favorites....more
