It picks up a little while after the end of the first book, and it doesn't shy away from the trauma that book 1 left us with! We get a deep dive into Rose, the way she thinks and the way she has to learn to heal. Rose has issues, and this book executes the healing from them in a fashion that you don't see often. It feels real, it feels RAW, and I loved every second of it.

And we get our first bit of second half of this little MMF adventure ... the one that was teased so sweetly! The lovely Milo romance that I have been waiting for since the first moment that man sauntered onto the page COMES TRUE! That's right, we get to dig into Milo's story in this book, and it's everything you could want! Love, growing, SPICE (and I do mean freaking SPICE). When I say that his scenes dragged me in like nothing else I mean it! And while he definitely had his time to shine ...
Will did too.
And I'll be honest, I wasn't a big fan of Will in the beginning of book 1, but he does some massive growing here. I'll admit, I've grown a bit of a soft spot for him, and Gisele honestly had me rooting for him! His arc is filling out very nicely, and I seriously can't wait to see where she takes it.
That's just the characters. The story is rich (and the world only grew from Sunset), and there are so many turns and little details that will constantly have you questioning what you know. Midnight by the Sea is what you would call a perfect sequel. Crafted with care, and exciting until the very last page. It's hard to find a place to start with my love for this book. Gisele Briseia has crafted an amazing story, one filled to the brim with some of the most beautiful world building I have ever read. I can't state enough how much I loved getting lost in the Golden Isles, and all the characters that make them up.
Rose, the main character, is searching for herself after the death of her father. And to help her do this, she ends up going back to Nora, the place where she feels most safe. There she stays with her aunt Vi, an absolute spitfire of a character that ALWAYS had me cracking up. I seriously loved her so much, from the kind way she always talked to Rose to her jabs at the new Mayor of Nora.
In terms of Romance, we get to meet the first of Roses LIs pretty early on, and Will is nothing if not a grumpy to her sunshine. He's a little standoffish, with his dad being the Mayor (the same one trying to mess up Nora for the townsfolk), but I love nothing if not for a little forbidden romance. He a bit rough around the edges, but that just makes me crave the grovel I know is coming that much more.
Onto my favorite character from the ragtag group, that would be Milo. Milo really stole the show for me from the moment he stepped onto land (literally). He's got the BIGGEST golden retriever/sunshine energy and I cannot get enough of him. To say I'm ready to see his interactions with Rose and Will once the romance really takes off is an UNDERSTATEMENT.
This was a gripping read that had me turning the pages well into the night, only to realize I'd reached the end. If you haven't picked this one up yet, then please do. You won't regret it!...more

The Barbarian and the Princess was a refreshing take on historicalesk romance. She's fun, and witty, and it's no surprise that Vikar eventually falls for her charms. Vikar struggles with accepting his new wife, and his pain not only feels real, but it's expressive, and it really binds you to his character. The story was intriguing as well, and it kept me flipping the pages as I waited to see what would happen with not only our leading couple, but everything else as well. The world itself has room to grow, as I'm sure it will in future books, but what we have learned of it so far sets the tone for a beautiful, if not slightly tragic, series.
All in all, I'd say pick it up if you haven't already. It's a solid read, with strong foundation, and well defined characters. It's a good pallet cleanser between long books/series, that ends in an HEA. ...more
