Two things that I disliked about the book is it's treatment of disabled people and it's treatment of octopi because they are one of my favorite types of animals. I enjoyed the friendship between Young-sook and Mi-ja and the many stages that their relationship went through from happiness to tragedy to hope at the end of the book. The book focuses on women only groups of divers in Korea so I definitely enjoyed learning more about them and learning how Young-sook started as a baby-diver and went on to become the chief of the group. I thought it was interesting to learn more about the history of Korea and the horrible roles that Japan and America played in it. Overall, the book was tragic and yet I still somewhat enjoyed reading it.
