I liked Johan and Nya together, but the story felt too silly at times and I agree with other reviewers who pointed out that some of the dialogue was cringey. Nya, who was nearly 30 years old, couldn’t say the word “penis” or “vagina” during sex scenes and instead used the ridiculous nickname “eggplant emoji” and “peach emoji”. I suppose it was meant to be a cute way to show her inexperience and sheltered upbringing, but it made her character feel a bit juvenile and made me cringe every time it was used. Also, I didn’t like the made-up language. Again, it just felt silly.
Also, while I love the diversity of Cole’s books, I would’ve appreciated more subtlety when dealing with the social issues that were presented in this book because, as it was written, it felt very ham-fisted and only served to pull me out of the story.
That said, I’m still giving this book three stars because I did enjoy it and finished it quickly. I just wish the quality of the writing had been better....more

Henry was a much better hero than his brother—less of a jerk and more willing to grow and learn from his mistakes. Sarah was also a good heroine and I thought she and Henry really connected despite their opposite personalities. I was worried the reality TV plot would be ridiculous but it was actually pretty funny and introduced some interesting secondary characters. I did think the first half of the story was a little stronger than the later half, and like the previous book there was some contrived drama, but overall I enjoyed this and I’ll likely continue with the series....more

•The present tense writing style and alternating POV chapters were jarring at times.
•I wasn't convinced the H/H were truly in love and their relationship would last when I closed the book. I just didn't see enough of them connecting despite numerous love scenes.
•The hero was kinda a jerk and there wasn't enough character growth to make up for it.
•The conflict was VERY contrived and could've easily been solved by talking instead of jumping to conclusions and...
•The ending was unsatisfying. (view spoiler)[The hero was a complete jerk to the heroine and she basically just forgives him. I'm not a fan of public apologies so even though he apologizes on TV and abdicates his throne, I still would've liked to have seen them work through their issues privately including a sincere apology. It featured a Dominican heroine and a Russian hero, both boxers in New York who get to know one another as they train for a fighting competition. I liked the setting of the old school gym and that Gennifer was tough, both mentally and physically. I thought Gennifer and Mikhail truly connected despite the obstacles in their path and that their HEA was well earned. The book was scorching hot too! A negative was that the book had a lot of typos scattered throughout (as did the last one I read, Flower in the Desert) and it distracted from the story at times, particularly when the wrong character name was used after a line of dialogue, confusing me as to who was actually speaking. ...more

I likThis was an interracial romance between an African American woman stranded in the Grand Canyon and a Native American tracker who helps find her. I liked the first half of the book much better than the second. Ruby and Jace’s display of smarts, humor and mutual attraction as they worked together to survive in the canyon was great. Unfortunately, the relationship development didn’t continue well once they returned to normal life. I wanted to see them continue to build on the bond forged in the canyon, but instead the couple had issues getting together for largely contrived reasons. I still enjoyed the book but I wasn’t as engaged during the second half. That said, I liked the writing enough to read more by this author....more

This was a cute read. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would as I was initially turned off by the premise of a guy falling in love with a woman while snooping through her emails (even if it was his job, it just sounded kind of creepy and weird), but after reading Fangirl I decided to give this one a try. A lot of the novel was comprised of the emails Beth and her friend Jennifer composed at work, and I enjoyed this format as many of the emails were interesting, funny and a true reflection of the women's friendship. I found all the characters to be relatable especially Lincoln as he struggled to find his footing in life after college. Rowell really excels at writing realistic characters with real fears and struggles that you can root for them to overcome. I also liked that the book was set in 1999/2000 era. The book really captured the time period, and the whole Y2K thing that everyone feared at the time. The pop culture references sprinkled throughout were fun too.
The only thing I didn’t like was the ending. I was a bit disappointed that (view spoiler)[it took until nearly the end of the book before Lincoln really talked with Beth and they began a relationship (hide spoiler)]. The quick resolution made the the ending feel unbelievable and a little too pat. If not for the ending, I probably would've bumped up my rating to four stars. ...more
