I am giving a bit of myself away here when I say that I got my first degree in Communications and have no issue with looking up a word in the dictionary at least once a day. I delight in it. This book had me looking up words almost every other page with the heavy use of Greek derived words from mythology, medical terminology/anatomy, and words to describe components of church architecture for Catholic/Church of England style cathedrals. I read Pillars of the Earth and still think this book (Gideon) has more obscure parts of a cathedral mentioned in it! None of this is a bad thing. I think it shows that the audience for this book is younger than I am and grew up reading books like the Percy Jackson series. There seems to be an ease that I am seeing those younger than myself reading this with the vocabulary. Just think it funny that I am looking up the word that is medical term for the whites of their eyes instead of just saying that. The audience for this book is definitely above average for vocabulary.
The story itself takes awhile to get going....but when it ends, you have a moment of "Wait, what?" and a longing for more. ...more
Enough is enough. I love fiction. I love science fiction. I like a story to explain why things are the way they are and complete a world for me. This Enough is enough. I love fiction. I love science fiction. I like a story to explain why things are the way they are and complete a world for me. This leaves me feeling frustrated as nothing is ever explained. What is the flare really doing to their brains? What do the tests really have to do with it? What will the cure really be? Pills? Laser treatments? Surgery? I mean, never once is a there a direct correlation that this test for random variables is actually on what? Thought patterns? On chemicals released in the brain? What is the variables measuring and how does it correlate to the Flare in the "Killzone." The Killzone sounds such like a buzz word to get us all excited. OVER NOTHING! It is called dialogue and it only needs a couple of lines of it to explain away things. Unless you don't know what happens either, shame on you author for bringing me along on a half-assed journey then through your fictional world that you don't even know how to explain and complete. Shame on me for not stopping quicker when I realized this in the first book.
You know what I really think? I think this was probably a loose dream the author had after playing a couple of video games and it made sense at the time like all dreams do, but by the time he got to writing a book, much less book three, it was fair to say he had no idea where the dream was going and how to improvise a believable ending to give us a logical explanation of this world. PLEASE, round out your all ideas if you want me to suspend my belief in your fictional world.
Disappointed because this was the first YA Dystopian I read that was written by a man and I tend to like male authors more than female. Not to mention that this was recommended by my daughter as she really loved it.
Gets one star for being published for real and getting a movie made for it. And a second star because language and structure wise, this book is nicely written. Just wish those words weren't feeling so randomly generated at the end and actually worked with each other to form a cohesive narrative....more
