Briefly, Maame is about a young woman who cares for her dad who has Parkinson’s Disease before going out into the world to finally get to live her life.
My dad died from Parkinson’s about 13 years ago and, funny enough, that’s still not long enough ago to make me NOT cry throughout this book. Maddie is a Ghanaian Londoner who is 25 but left to care for her ill father. She has a carer come in during the week to help so she can go to her job, as an assistant to a depressed (but really really rude) theater manager. James, Maddie’s brother, is off living his own life and never returns home and never has money to help. Maddie’s mum is off in Ghana, running a hotel left to her by her father, also rarely home and always asking for money.
Maddie is only 25, guys.
She loves her dad dearly so she stays at the house with him, caring for him until her mom finally returns home for a year. Maddie suffers some serious losses but decides to move out and start her life. While a good move, more losses keep coming. I was seriously angry at the other characters on Maddie’s behalf and, surprisingly to me, getting just as devastated and depressed over her dad as she was.
Again, I thought having 13 years pass since I lost dad was going to make reading this ok. I cried nearly as much as Maddie. Don’t let that deter you from reading this really amazing book. Maddie is a character you can watch grow and root for when life keeps smacking her down. It’s not all doom and gloom! Maddie is constantly Googling for help to navigate life and her Google searches are pretty epic at times. She figures out relationships and balances her not so awesome family with her new freedom.

The author obviously doesn’t know about my fear of swarms of ladybugs, but she provided numerous swarms of ladybugs that about did me in.
Sam, delayed on her archaeological dig, comes home to stay with her mom in the south vs going back to Arizona where she resides as an adult. Her mom is staying in her mother’s, Gran Mae, house that she inherited when Gran Mae died. Sam’s brother, Brad, has been telling Sam that something seems wrong with their mom.
Sam sees the oddness for herself and she starts experiencing some wild and terrifying incidents in the house. Now, Gran Mae was not a nice woman. She had bucketfuls of issues and she was a demanding and cruel mother and grandmother. But she had a fabulous rose garden!
Sam’s mom and Sam end up finally talking to each other (honestly, that took a little too much time to get to a real conversation about the horrors happening between those two) and then everything just comes crashing in. Literally.

His main goal is to get downtime to watch his illegally downloaded soap operas.
But humans are dumb and he has to keep saving them. He’s a bot who is unnerved by humans and this crew wants to be his friend. Which unnerves him more.

This was not what I expected at all. I really enjoyed reading this, and instead of paying bills and doing chores, I sat and read. The Currently Reading podcast are enablers.
Set in Brooklyn, Eva Mercy is holding it all together as a single mom of pre-teen Audre while paying the bills as a fantasy erotica writer. She can’t just be a writer and a mom, she has to be out there at events, on social media, keeping up a presence to keep the books (fourteen of them) in the public eye. She also has an invisible disability, debilitating migraines, yet she keeps on going.
Shane Hall is also a writer who has published 4 books that met critical acclaim. But he could only write when he’s drunk, and he’s working on being and staying sober. Shane has no permanent place. He stays wherever for however long, being a stand-in teacher at posh schools and at some of the worst inner city schools he can find.
Eva and Shane meet up at a Black author panel. Except, they’ve known each other since high school, and after that chaotic, whirlwind of seven days in June, Shane disappeared, and Eva was left heartbroken and on her own. Fifteen years later, will they embark on another seven days?
This book was funny and touching (with sexy times) all at once. The tween daughter felt a little too wise and grown up, offering valid advice to the adults (I don’t recall being that worldly at 12) but she was needed to push Eva and Shane in the right direction....more
