Although not my type of book, the writing was flawless, and Morgenstern's imagination? Yikes! Scary, but in the best possible way.
There is A LOT going on in this story - When I think of a circus, I think of a special place that enchants children and adults, alike. The Night Circus brings its own sort of magic to the realm because it only appears at night, and you never know where it is going to appear. It also seems to have a life, while maybe not of its own, created or managed almost like a puppeteer manipulating a puppet. Towards the end of the book when Bailey had to attempt to restart the flame to bring the circus back to life, this reminded me of the time after the last rose petal falls in Beauty and the Beast, and it takes love to put color [magic] back into the world.
Time is important to the story, and yet the timestamps at the beginning of each chapter often confused me. Also, there are MANY characters, some more memorable than others.
The story ended differently than I thought it would. Towards the end of the book, when Celia is in her library, readers are told that there is a raven outside of a cage. In Shakespeare, a raven signals that death is upon us, and with the way things were going between Marco and Celia, I was looking for a more Romeo and Juliet type ending, but alas that is not what happened. ...more
