Poor Charlie inherits his unknown uncle's business. The legitimate business is parking garages, but of course that isn't what he really inherits. This one was humorous and I ended up laughing out loud a couple of times and smiling almost the whole time. It is very action-packed as well as funny with quite a cute, somewhat funny ending. I think the whole thing was really great and would recommend it to everyone! My favorite character would have to include 73 (yes, that is a name) and Hera, as well as Charlie and Morrison. The whales were fantastic as well. It is totally unbelievable but still so fun. I'll look again at Scalzi's other books. ...more

I appreciated how vulnerable Lewis got with his readers and how much he was really willing to share in this format. I thought it was funny how his mom and dad were depicted and how he broke the fourth wall to talk directly to the readers (and they did as well) in order to depict some humor. Otherwise, this could be quite a bleak book.
Not sure yet where it fits in/if it fits in to the school libraries. I think I'll ask someone else to read so we can discuss. If it were just the words, no problem, but some of the pictures may have pushed it over the line, even for our high school libraries. But again, not 100% sure. Still, I think some of our students could use this memoir. Definitely something to discuss with others - I don't want to be the final decision maker since this is an adult title....more

There are illustrations interWhile this is listed as a graphic novel, it isn't one in the usual sense. It doesn't have panels with drawings and text. There are illustrations interspersed throughout the novel, more like a children's beginning chapter book where there are illustrations (sometimes full-page) scattered throughout the novel itself. It was also interestingly told because all the swear words and "sex" words were behind a black rectangle like it had been redacted. If you know what should be there, f*** or sh** etc then you can read it pretty easily. If you don't have any experience with it and don't know what should be behind the black mark, there is no real way to find out. This is a good story about one boy reaching out in loneliness to another and how a teen can easily be in an abusive relationship and not even really know it. This is easily read in a day and one I would recommend. I read it for the district book committee and am going to recommend HS only....more

It is certainly marketed to YA6/10/23: I'm not sure what I'm going to rate this or what I'm going to tell the district book committee about this one. It is certainly marketed to YA as I've already purchased it for my high school library. However, some of the content may just go over that fine line we are always walking. It was quite explicit in some areas of just what some animals do to other animals in a sexual way. It doesn't really matter about that it is either heterosexual or homosexual, it is explicit about sex, which in many of our schools is off limits because of parental ideas of appropriate topics. And yet, because much of the book deals with homosexual or bisexual (which tends to be the norm possibly), we will for sure need to have at least one other person read so we can discuss to make a decision. There were lots of comic pages, some interviews with queer scientists, and the book discusses the whole continuum of asexual, pansexual, bisexual, etc in the animal kingdom. I honestly quite enjoyed the book, laughed at many of the jokes, and would recommend to many different adults I know. I'm just not sure it belongs on a high school library shelf. I guess we'll see....more

Jainan was my favorite character and went through so much. I loved how Kiem brought him out of his shell and convinced him that he was worthy and that Kiem really did love him. I can't wait to read the next in the series. The mystery of who killed Taam (Tom) and what was happening on the Kingfisher mining operation was intriguing and filled with red-herrings. And all of it taking place in space in a made up world with made up technology just put the icing on the cake. Loved it....more

Lenni is a fighter and I loved her relationsip with Father Arthur and Margot. We got to know Margot's story so much more than Lenni's but while it felt a little lopsided, it sort of was like their ages. We got about 17% of Lenni and 83% of Margot. The LGBTQ aspect surprised and delighted me. (I guess that could be somewhat of a spoiler.) I think my favorite character was, Margot. I would really recommend this book....more

It was an interesting reading experience for me because I liked what I was reading and enjoyed the book while I was reading, but then when I put it down, I was never really drawn to pick it up again. The demon/angel things that could be done and seen were interesting and they human interactions had a happier outcome than one would expect from that timeline.
