I love a friends to lovers romance and the way these two were so oblivious had me wanting to shout at my Kindle. But it was understandable as well, because they're each going through some really difficult things. Kenny is just barely getting out of and trying to come to terms with an abusive relationship, and she keeps coming back and trigger him. Han has just lost his job and with it, the chance at a green card, which is terrifying for him. So it makes sense that they both didn't immediately notice their feelings for each other.
The themes in this book were all on the heavier side, but the friendship, and later the romance, was so precious and felt so safe, because even before they started a relationship, they're all in with each other and they're each other's support system. I never had any doubts that these people belonged together, and I loved seeing them spend time together and grow even closer....more

This is pretty brutal for a middlegrade novel, but it's also full of heart and hope. Millie and Rose were both very different and have very different ways of coping with what's happening to them, which was interesting to read and I think will help middlegrade readers understand that people respond to similar situations differently and that's okay. I absolutely loved the Lost Boys, particularly Ben, and the story became so much more hopeful once Millie and Rose met them.
This isn't quite 5 stars for me, though, because I was honestly expecting a little more from this. I felt like the ending was a little rushed, and this book didn't do much that felt inventive to me - I feel like it's a fairly standard post-apocalyptic story....more

Luckily I did enjoy it enough to want to read the author's next adult romance, because I definitely enjoyed this one more! It's so much about figuring yourself out at a later age, and that always really resonates with me. I'm also a huge fan of friends to lovers, and I loved how Izzie was so supportive throughout Cash's process of figuring out she's actually a lesbian. Izzie was already an amazing friend, so I was convinced the romance would be amazing, but she also gave Cash so much room to figure things out on her own while being supportive in the background. I'm also not always a fan of kids in books, but who couldn't love Parker? It was so touching how she already considered Izzie to be family....more

Grace is such an interesting main character, because she's gone through a lot, which is understandably difficult, but she's also often in the wrong, and she doesn't always make the right choices. It would be easy to lose sympathy for her as a reader, but she never becomes unlikeable, because she's written in this raw, honest way that makes you care about her so much. This book is almost 400 pages, and it has so many different themes, but this just makes it feel like you get to know Grace so well....more

It is a comforting small town, brother's best friend romance, with a dash of magic to spice things up. This time, I wasn't quite convinced by the first half of the book, because I felt like it focused too much on the DnD gameplay (S&S in the book), and not enough on the actual characters and plot. I've never played DnD and it all just felt like a LOT to me and I wasn't super interested. I also found it a little hard to read because Hollis, who's fat, anxious, confused about her sexuality and has self-esteem issues, hit very close to home for me and it was like reading about my own teenaged self. In the second half though, this book completely won me over, which made me raise my 3 star rating to a solid 4 stars. It was amazing to see Hollis come into her own and start being happier and standing up for herself and making so many amazing new friends. I still just wouldn't have needed so much detailed gameplay described, but I loved Hollis so much and found her so relatable. I loved the fat rep and especially the anxiety rep, and I loved that Hollis doesn't land on a label because it's all just words in the end and you don't have to know everything about yourself immediately....more

At first I felt sure I wouldn't enjoy it, and was even tempted to DNF, but then the writing started to grow on me, and I really liked the ending of the first section.
Overall though, I didn't end up enjoying this, even though I liked the writing. The stream of consciousness is beautifully written with some quotes that really resonated with me, but stream of consciousness is so hard to get right and it's so hard to still keep the book structured enough, which is where I felt this book didn't succeed. The different sections didn't feel cohesive, so the story felt very choppy and confusing.
