The main reason I'm only rating this book 3 stars is that it felt more like a draft than a finished book. The formatting was off and there were strange repetitions within the text, making it difficult to keep track of the story properly. I might give it another try when the finished copy is released.
I do however love a verse novel, and this was a really quick but really insightful read. I can't judge the genderqueer rep myself, and I'm interested to read more reviews about that, but I did love how accepting and supportive Jamie's friends and family were of them after they came out as genderqueer, and it felt both realistic and hopeful when it comes to the struggle to come out and the fears that accompany that....more

But while the ending was really strong and unsettling, I found it didn't make as much of an impact on me as it could have. The main reason for that is the format. I've loved all the verse novels I've previously read, but this is the first one where I felt like the verse didn't really add anything....more

I'm glad I did, because this is such a beautiful, gripping book. It has a really strong message and it's impossible not to get emotionally invested. I also loved the supernatural element. The open ending and the mystery throughout the novel really invite the reader to come up with their own interpretations as well. If anyone has recommendations for other good YA verse novels, please let me know!...more

While some of these poems did resonate with me, I wasn't impressed with most of them. They seemed a little pretentious at times, and too unoriginal at others. For the most parts, I felt like Kaur hinted at important topics but didn't take the plunge to really discuss them....more

It almost made me cry a couple of times, and that doesn't happen a lot. The verse format made everything a hundred times better, but the story itself is such a strong one, and I especially loved the relationship between Xiomara and her twin brother.
