White Line Fever is a searing page turner that will make you consider avoiding cars for life. This is all-wheel-drive horror at its most fun!"
I just want to emphasize how fun and scary this book is! Plus, it explores a chunk of Oregon most people don't think about too much....more

It's like la-di-da, just another work day, oops I just talked to a demon. At no point is there a sense of melodrama or an attempt to elicit dread, and let me tell you, it shouldn't work but it DOES. Is the main character likable? Not in the least! Is the demon worse? Oh my, yes. And by the end, you're entirely sucked into its horrible world....more

Wildfires? Tornadoes? Hurricanes? They're eating America, and what they don't eat, they leave in pain.
This very short read is a beautiful, sad, and creepy snapshot of one town's pain and the monster that takes advantage of their suffering. A must-read for anyone reading horror in the 21st century!...more

(If that story or that painting is not on your radar, it will be after you read this graphic novel [although to be fair, I prefer Klimt's Judith]). This installment contains more art information, although maybe not quite as much because there is A LOT to get through, and much more of the story is centered on Karen and her actions.

I know I'm a little late to the party on it, but that doesn't mean I'm not completely smitten now that I've arrived. The characters are complex and interesting, with even the nastiest showing layers and the occasional glint of ... is that goodness? The story is heartbreaking, nesting a very dark tale about a murdered woman -- who grew up in a German brothel and escapes the concentration camps by agreeing to run her own child brothel -- inside a coming-of-age-meets-detective story about a young lesbian living in a Chicago of 1968. It's a story of community and family and how difficult society makes it to be different.
ON TOP of all this, this book is an ode to art, with unexpected threads devoted to composition theory, art history, and the incredible power of art to transform our lives.
I look forward to re-reading this over and over again....more

Well, this is a story about the ways we break each other and are broken by each other. It's about how horror movies work and don't work. This book was well-written and interesting, but I did find myself thinking: Why isn't it over yet? But it did have a few more reveals, so it proved worth the extra pages.

Barbara Ehrenreich is a grumpy, cantankerous science writer who is totally fed up with the health and wellness beat, and somewhere in her wanderings has become something of a philosopher. Underneath the grumpy diatribes about the healthcare system's systematic dehumanization of its patients, the classism of "wellness," and the sheer quackery of most "mindfulness" advice is a long, dark look at the granularity of the self and the simple beauty of death.
Angry and thought-provoking, this book is really about trying to find a way to live in peace in a modern era choked with misinformation and fear....more

I really enjoyed the MC's relationship with Sloane and Cullen, two of the lower staff, and I LOVED the suggested dark fairy elements. The ending felt a bit rushed, with most of the questions about the family left unanswered (or perhaps answered in a cursory fashion).
A solid debut that promises a strong future for the writer!...more
