What a great way to teach tolerance and diversity with this cute penguin story that is based on real life. Nakyla loves the penguins and wants to hear the story again and again. It also has prompted a lot of talk about how it takes a mommy and a daddy to make a baby, but that sometimes when a mommy and daddy can't take care of their baby it makes the way for these two daddies to raise a baby together. This story is just too cute....more

You gotta love an economy where they can sell their place for the same amount as a horse. The book did start out pretty depressing. I cried when they talked about the dog dying. I was really amazed in this book at all the work that went into building the house and the railroad. It is also amazing how quickly everything went up.
The only thing I didn't like is the one place in this book where there were some racist remarks. I looked at my book and found that it is an older addition, so maybe the newer additions have fixed this. I understand that the feelings expressed in the books are also a reflection of the times and the conflict and misunderstanding between the settlers and the Native Americans. I'm glad I was reading the book out loud to Nakyla so I could censor those parts.
Overall, I still think this was a great book. It had so many wonderful things in it and it was a pleasure to read it to Nakyla. ...more

I don't think Nakyla liked this one as much as the other two. I think she missed reading about baby Carrie. Still, it amazes me to think of all the things that had to be done to run such a big farm and to make all the different kinds of foods that they ate in the book. ...more

Well, I didn't like this book as well as the first. I found it fascinating to read all the details about how they moved and how they built the house. It amazes me to think about how things have changed. I do feel quite spoiled. The thing that I didn't like so much about the book was the way the conflict between the settlers and the Native Americans was portrayed. I know there was a lot of conflict and misunderstanding, but I wish that it could have been told using different words. I found myself having to skip racist comments. I know that people felt that way at the time, but I wish there would have been an explanation about it in the book. I was glad that I was reading the book with Nakyla so that we could talk about it. I will have to remember this and be cautious if there comes a day when she wants to read it on her own....more

I was really impressed by the questions that she has asked during this process. I also enjoy reading the book again for myself. Ken overheard one of the parts where Ramona "boings" another girl's curly hair and remarked that it is just like me (because that's what I like to do to David's hair when it was long). I told him it was this book that gave me the idea to boing his hair in the first place. It's so fun passing this stuff on to the next generation....more

I don't know if it is the shape or color of the books or the box they are in, but she really wants to learn to read them.
So I started reading them to her. We are reading them in order. I read them once when I was younger, but it is nice to read them again. It is really interesting to see not only how different their day to day life was, but also how they felt about the behavior of children. There are a lot of phrases and things related to behavior and discipline that I don't believe in, but if you take it as part of the historical value of the book, it's not as much of a bother.
The best part about these books is the questions that Nakyla asks me about them. She is really interested in the things that happen and even days later still talks about it. It is so nice that we are sharing such a positive book that is branching from my childhood to hers....more
