The story is pretty typical for Modesitt, long time fans pick it right up. The magic descriptions in this book though are the closest to magic as tech and Recluce has no gods along with the back story of rival star empire's ships forced landings. I wonder if I should mark it SF and not fantasy?...more

Kyr practices hard, she wants to be a warrior in the dystopic Gaea Station. Instead of fighting the aliens, she finds herself assigned to Nursery, the station's harem. (view spoiler)[ Luckily this isn't a Heinlein novel, so she escapes with the help of an alien, her brother and his friend. This is the first timeline with Earth destroyed. Thru the use of the strange alien god-machine, Kyr goes back in time and saves the Earth.
Earth forces then conquer the galaxy and develop their own god-machine, having two machines operating at once makes the universe start to unravel even after destroying most of the alien empire, this winds up the second timeline.
Kyr intervenes and the Earth dies again, starting the final timeline in which the god-machine commits suicide and all the threads are resolved. (hide spoiler)]

Two major characters on one side are sucked into the constant feuding that this culture seems to generate. The difference in economic standing from the lowest to the highest is extreme, with those on the bottom are so close to slaves that it doesn't matter.
There are multiple military SF tropes in this novel, there is no democracy in space, 20th century rock is the best music of all time, etc. Though I do like the non-ironic use of the phrase "Release the krakens!".
The characters are decent though, the royals and their servants feel like real people for the most part. That combined with some serious and varied forms of action makes for a fun, if somewhat generic read....more
