Great beginning, and then it just got terribly tedious and dull. I am so sorry to say this, but the first 1/3 was excellent, excellent. Not a huge fan of the cutesy teen voice, but I understand, it works for a lot of people to believe that an 18 year old might sound like that. But then, the "other world" of Empis just lost me. Maybe it's me. Maybe it's that this is the first King novel I've read. Maybe I just stopped wanting to deal with the violence and cruelty? Maybe I'm a literary fiction person? I don't need anything to "happen" in novels, and many of my favorite books are where nothing happens, so when I say it got "tedious and dull" I am not referring to action. The story just ended for me when he went into Empis. None of the things that happened in the real world, the great interpersonal story of the 1/3, with the exception of Charlie's love for the dog, had any relevance in Empis. What, exactly was the point of the quest? It just had no continuity with the whole set up of the story. I am willing to accept that the fault is with me. I'm sorry.
