You can tell how much research Moore must have put into each and every page because they were all LOADED with history. The women, the planes, the romance, the everything - so much detail and thought when into every single word.
I always appreciate historical stories about women who make it in a "man's world" so to speak. Nancy was such a great heroine. She knew what she liked/wanted and she didn't back down. She was graceful, tough, stubborn, fair, and fought for herself and those like her. But when she did, she fought with elegance, grace, and grit.
I also enjoyed the romance between Nancy and Robert. It didn't take away from the history and emotions of the book, and yet it was powerful at the same time. It was sweet, slow (just the right amount of slowness), natural, and encouraging. I love how Robert was there for Nancy. He allowed her to be her own person, never holding her back. I can't imagine many men in that time period doing that. It was really a sweet addition to an already engaging story.
Though this is a work a fiction, there is so much to learn and be inspired by. I'm so glad Moore decided to write about Nancy, and took her time with the story. It might be a long read, but it's oh so worth it. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own....more

When we think about WWII, or any war for that matter, we mostly think about people. I appreciate that she brings this to light because it's important for us to know. Animals are important to me, and horses? Well they have always had a special place in my heart.
Aside from showing the beauty and importance of these majestic animals, Miller also brings forth brave characters. Their journey is unlike anything I've read before, and I found myself hanging onto Miller's every word. Adia and Bret were brought together in an unlikely fashion, and yet they just worked. Mix in Ewan and you have the perfect trio. Their treacherous journey, sacrifices, and entire story was just so moving. So well put together.
WWII fiction fans, horse fans, historical fiction fans, and compelling fiction fans alike will enjoy their time in Miller's novel. I cannot wait to see what comes next from her. Her writing is to simply put it - poetic.

ThI have yet to read a book from Amanda Barratt that did not touch my heart in deep, meaningful ways, and The Warsaw Sisters is no exception to that. The amount of history, emotion, turmoil and yes hope that Barratt puts in her stories is amazing. She has this uncanny ability to take you on this horrific journey, and yet layer it with hope, determination, sprinkles of grace, love, and so much more. On top of that, you learn about parts of history that are either often forgotten or unheard of. And so while you are on this emotional roller coaster, you are also learning and digging for even more information about this people and their circumstances.
Honestly, there are not enough words to be able to describe the amount of respect I have for Barratt, or how much I thoroughly enjoy her novels. Yes, there are difficult things to read about - we are talking WWII after all. But Barratt handles them with such finesse and grace. She puts in just what is needed for the story, as well as educating the reader and touching their heart. And again, I cannot stress the amount of hope she puts in her characters. They are no one "special" in the world's eyes, but they still fight for what they believe in and try to make a difference. They are truly inspiring.
Historical fiction fans will not be disappointed with Barratt's most recent release. Yes tissues need to be close by at all times, but trust me when I say you will not regret reading the pages of this novel. May it touch and inspire you as it did me.

And no, I don’t mean anything that I should be averting my eyes from. No, Lessman has found the perfect way to include tension, romance, and chemistry in a clean way, yet in a way that is more than just your typical “Hallmark romance”. There is real spice here (again, clean) and I am for it. Why? Well because I would like to think we have that in our marriages. It’s real life, and certainly relatable.
In addition, Lessman gives readers real characters that struggle with faith, grow in faith, and everywhere in between. I thoroughly enjoyed Henry’s journey. Not one time did it feel forced – it was all natural and I could see someone like him in real life going through the same journey. Again we see how Lessman brings real, relatable characters to the story. Notice a theme!?
The other thing about Lessman is how she brings history to life. We see things in this story that are horrible, and rightly so, but things that are not talked about much in our history books. It shows me that she did her research, and while at times it was tough to read (only because of the truth of the matter), it was true to history. Makes you want to do your own research (though I don’t know how much research I want to do for child trafficking because I’m certain it would make me both cry and cringe). My point being – Lessman works hard to make her books true to life. They are not fluffy, nor is everything wrapped in a cute present with a bow on top. A Dare and a Prayer is a story that will certainly show hope and light in a world of darkness, but also show difficulties and some of the emotions that people have (whether we want to or not).
This book may not be for those who want a pretty historical fiction. But it is for those who want a raw, honest story. A story with real characters with real emotions. Emotions we’ve most likely all felt at one point or another. A story with hope, character growth, and even laughter. Lessman is one of my favorites and I hope you’ll find that she is yours too!

I mean, the perspective Moore brings to this part of WWII was just mesmerizing. We, of course by nature, only think about the big picture impact of WWII. With authors like Amanda Barratt, we do start to see some of the smaller impacts (smaller in our opinion only - they were huge to the people they affected), and I'm happy to see that Moore has joined in.
Under the Java Moon is a read that will move readers in unexpected ways. It brings a wave of emotions - joy, sorrow, hope, uncertainty, fear and so much more. I love seeing the storylines for Mary and George - married and yet experiencing very different parts of the war as many couples did. Both strong yet vulnerable, Mary and George were well developed characters that will stay with me for quite some time.
If you're looking for a book that will make history come alive in new ways, I highly encourage you to read Under the Java Moon. I think you'll find yourself trapped in the pages for hours. Elaine Stock has a way of writing like none other. Her characters move readers throughout the pages of the novel. Not only do you have compassion and Elaine Stock has a way of writing like none other. Her characters move readers throughout the pages of the novel. Not only do you have compassion and empathy for them, but you have respect, admiration, and awe. Edith is no exception to the rule. She shows bravery in a new light. She shows hope that can apply to us even today. No, we do not live anywhere near the tragedy that she did in this story, yet we have difficulties in our own lives, and Edith reminds us that we can and will get through it.
We also read about Vonni, who's story is just as impactful as Edith's. I can't imagine the depth of hurt and sorrow Vonni went through in this story (I don't want to include any spoilers, so you'll have to read it for yourself). But she shows great strength and courage, reminding readers that even when things are grim, even when it seems like you are alone, the truth is that you are not alone and you can keep going.
Both of these women provide valuable lessons to the reader, but what really makes this story a hit is Stock's words. Her ability to pull you into the time period, feeling a sense of belonging as you're reading, and hitting you with every single emotion the characters feel is uncanny. I thoroughly enjoy reading her stories for this very reason. Historical fiction fans who enjoy jumping into that time machine will love reading When We Disappeared. And if you haven't started the series yet, I encourage you to read the entire series. Each and every story will be sure to touch your heart.

There are novels that will touch your heart, and then there are novels that will absolutely shatter your world. This is such a book. The Lon4.5 stars!
There are novels that will touch your heart, and then there are novels that will absolutely shatter your world. This is such a book. The Long March Home is so much more that I anticipated. It is gut wrenching in spots, tender in spots, hopeful in spots, and simply a stunning read. It took my breath away. Yes, there were difficult moments as I was reading. Honestly – it’s a war novel, I expected it. But those who have a hard time reading about violence and it’s after effects may want to take that into consideration. I would say it’s highly graphic, but I have a pretty imaginative mind so it doesn’t take much in the description area for me to be able to imagine. Anyways…. that’s just a side note.
The bottom line is that if you enjoy history, if you enjoy stories set during and in the midst of a war, then this is the book for you. It almost has a memoir feel to it, which I rather enjoyed. I also really liked the two timelines that it went back and forth on. It made it so there was something to break up the roughness of the war, plus you really learned the backstory of the characters by “living” it.
There is a lot between the pages of this book – emotions, trials, blessings, and so much more. I think it would make a fantastic read for a book club – there are so many things you can discuss while reading through, and I wish I would have thought of messaging a friend to share my thoughts as I read. I cannot say enough good things about this story. Again, it’s not for everyone, so be sure to do your homework. But if this type of book is right up your alley – well then get your copy as soon as possible, grab your tissues, and get ready for a roller coaster of emotions. It is well worth it.

I'm not sure there are words to describe the depths of emotion I had while reading this novel. Barratt doesn't just give you a lesson in history, she I'm not sure there are words to describe the depths of emotion I had while reading this novel. Barratt doesn't just give you a lesson in history, she makes you feel it. And if I felt it this much as a reader, I cannot even fathom how she was able to write it, and write it so eloquently. Barratt finds this unknown little stories about such an awful time in history, and just brings them to life. When we think of the tragedy of WWII, we really just think over the overall brutality of it. We often don't stop to consider each individual life that was affected by it. Barratt makes you think about each individual. Both on the good side and the bad side.
One thing that always touches my heart about her novels, and this one is no different - she reminds us that there are good guys who are unfortunately part of the bad side of history. In that I mean there were God fearing men dressed in German uniform. They didn't like what they had to endure, and some of them, like Janek, tried to use their position for good. It's a good reminder to not judge a person by their appearance. They might not be the bad guy you think they are.
The other thing I appreciate about Barratt is that she does not sugar coat what is happening in her story. Now, I will admit sometimes it is very hard to read, and by hard I mean like emotionally hard. Some people may not appreciate reading the horrific events of WWI that took place around these characters. Some of the characters themselves had to endure things I could never imagine, nor would I want to. But while she doesn't sugar coat it, she isn't explicit either. She writes enough so you know what's going on without the graphic writing. Trust me, the images still come to my head, and that's tough. I'm always in a fog when I read her stories honestly. But among the awful events surrounding this story, Barratt still provides hope. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I can't expand on that too much. The hope comes from the faith of the characters. Hope comes from those officers that choose to help the Jews even though they could die. Hope comes from the pharmacy workers who choose to put their life on the line in order to help. I think the way she sprinkles these little glimpses of hope throughout the story is perfectly timed- just when you need it.
I knew going in this would probably be on my favorites list of 2023 and I was not wrong. Full of emotion, history, inspiration, hope, and faith, this book will be on my mind for a very long time. Not only that, I can see myself rereading it, and pairing it with some historical websites so I can research some of the accounts myself as my own history lesson. History is hard, but it's something we need to learn so it doesn't repeat itself. Thank you Amanda Barratt for bringing this story to life. I am honored to read your words.

She is not afraid to put emotion into her characters and their stories. She isn’t afraid to write about hard time periods. You can see the tireless hours of research she must have spent before penning these novels, because every little detail is so carefully placed on the page. Stock makes you want to jump into the story and help the characters, encourage them, pray with them, and just be a part of their story.
Herta and Julia were such wonderfully written heroines, each with their own hurts and fear, but together a winning a combination. They were strong, and often made my ponder how I might have reacted to their circumstances. Most likely not as brave. But they made you believe that you might. And that is what makes Stock such an amazing story teller. She makes you believe in the characters, yes, but also in yourself. I can’t really describe it. Just to say you’re going to have to check this out for yourself. Get tissues, a warm blanket, and some cocoa, it’s going to be a long (but worth it!) ride. Your emotions will go all over the place, but when you reach the ending, you will not regret one single moment.
I highly encourage historical fiction fans to read not only this charming book, but the first book in the series as well. I can’t wait to see what comes next! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own....more

She weaves such a beautiful story of God’s love for everyone – even the people “we” (society) deem unworthy. The truth is we are all unworthy of God’s love, and yet He provides it. And why can’t we learn from that and do the same? Or take a lesson from Nellie. But more on that in a moment. Tolsma always has the most wonderful faith threads in her stories and this is no different. Yes, there were some woeful moments, that make you sad, and ponder how such things could happen. But then there’s this moment of light. Clarity. Hope. And Tolsma puts them at the perfect times.
Then there’s the research. Tolsma has such attention to detail in her books, from the setting, the historical aspects to the plot, the way the characters talk, and the types of characters there are. And confession – I visited Tolsma’s blog to see if she added any historical tidbits from her research and she has. I highly recommend you checking it out. I can honestly say that I felt like I was in France during this time period. Everything she wrote payed tribute to that.
Liz Tolsma also has a way with character writing. Nellie is such a good heroine. She has a huge heart, she’s determined, and she values life simply put. She’s not afraid of getting her hands dirty, or taking chances. I love the way she is with the children in this story, especially Claire. Her character had such depth, such love. She truly was inspiring to me. And by far my favorite character.
A Picture of Hope is a book to run to the store and buy. Or ask your library to purchase so lots of people can read it. It provides hope, courage, love, the gospel, and a plot line that will leave a mark on your heart. I highly recommend reading this beautifully written story. Her words are purposeful, beautiful, smooth, and perfectly laid out across the pages of this book. The combination of dialogue, internal thought, letters, and POV's is masterfully put together. And the history! I learned so much from this book, which led me to looking into even more when I was done. Amy Lynn Green takes these little unknown facts from history and turns them into amazing stories. She's careful to keep true to the era and the facts, while sprinkling in her own imagination.
Perhaps what touched my heart more than anything about this story was the message behind it. Green reminds readers that you can have two people with opposite viewpoints that come together and really listen to the other side. Maybe not at first, but the more Gordon and Dorie are together, learn about each other, learn about the reasons behind their viewpoint, the more they start to understand the other side. And isn't that what we should be doing in ALL aspects of our lives? Listening to the other side, not just shutting them down? Oh my word this message really spoke to me, and rang loud and clear for me. If there is one message (besides the gospel) that this world needs today, it is this.
Green will take your breath away with The Lines Between Us. The history, mystery, strong characters, and descriptive writings will draw you in without a chance to leave. Make sure you set some time aside to read it, you're going to need it! I highly recommend this novel for historical fiction fans, especially those looking for the little pieces of history that are unknown. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
