It's hard to really give this book the credit it deserve. Five stars just isn't enough for this story, this awesome read, this whole series, for it isIt's hard to really give this book the credit it deserve. Five stars just isn't enough for this story, this awesome read, this whole series, for it is rich beyond epic, full with anger, lust, betrayal, revenge, love, hatred, fear, broken bonds, long forgotten history that unfolds to bind allies, forged bargains with evil so tainted that death is the best wish one could hope for and forcing togetherness at the last moment when needed for survival? It's hard to see a way that the author can continue and outdone this rich fantasy and the hunger that will linger in you for more feed on the family of lead characters and the unexpected bond that formed between them.
I love a good read, a good fantasy that keep me turning pages after pages and no wondering how fast time has past or worried about sleep until it's too late and the body shuts down just for some short snores......this series, this book delivers all that.
If you love strong solid adventures with characters you can believe in and love adrenaline keeping you on the edge of your seat, this is the book for it. You can blame the author for squeezing every lengthy angle before you get to breath again....just don't sue....more

I haven't finished it yet but I would never give this to my husband to read, first of all he couldn't read this and secondly if he did he would probably be scarred for life. So far it reads more like a history of how ignorant humanity has been about sex and all of the completely moronic sexual things that humanity has done and some of them are really quite horrific like how some African slaves were given repeated vaginal surgeries in the early days of gynocology. I will probably finish it but it ifeels like it was written more for the novelty, which admittedly is a solid genre....more

The narrative is awkward, the dialogue, stiff and unnatural. At best, the story moved along like a cheaply produced TV series, one that is cancelled after six episodes. Grisham loads the story with too much extraneous information. It's as if he was being paid by the word. The epilogue alone reads like a highly detailed police report. I once worked for a law enforcement organization and am familiar with the style--which is perfectly appropriate for police reports but not in a novel.
None of the characters are particularly likable. The principal character, Lacy Stolz, comes across as flat and uninteresting. The bad guys are phlegmatic, bland, and dull, even though they are described as serious criminals involved in organized crime. There is absolutely no suspense to keep you going. Where is the author of "The Firm" and "A Time to Kill?" These early books were true page turners with great characterization and captivating plots. The plot of the "The Whistler" is plausible, but the story as written is as dry as dust....more

I've now read several of her novels, but this is far and above the best so far. The story just keeps twisting and turning and getting even more intriguing. It had me up reading half the night I got so involved. And when the crime is finally solved, it isn't anyone you would have suspected. And yet all the pieces of the puzzle fit together so nicely.
