I don't know if it was the translation or culture or what but I just felt like there was symbolism with the fish that I was missing and the timeline didn't really flow - I couldn't quite tell when one scene ended and another began at points. I get the gist that our mc's wife (who is never named?) wants a baby.. and then two of his friends have babies.. but it just didn't make a lot of sense to me over all....more

Typically, each poem in a novel-in-verse will be a new scene etc., most of these poems could've been connected - written in normal prose - and it would just read like one scene/paragraph.
If I ignore the choice of formatting, it was fine. It wasn't mindblowing or super gripping, but it was an enjoyable enough read....more

It wasn't my favourite novel in verse I've read, but it was one of the shortest so I'm putting it down to that and the fact it had less space to go deeper. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and Eric felt like a very complex character despite not getting to spend a lot of time with him. This could easily be stretched to a novel if the author (who is only 19!) wanted to and I'm really keen to read more of their work going forward!...more

I picked this book up right at the start of a slump and it took me forever to get through it but it was a delight the entire time. I felt like I trully understood Ben's compulsions and the anxiety and distress he felt because of them. I really disliked the handling of his parents situation and teh way the dad behaved - the resolution, the way he just came back and how he explained his actions just felt wrong in my opinion, like he just wouldn't leave the kids with a non-functioning alcholic mother like that. It felt like he just needed to not be there but the author didn't want him to be a shitty dad who just left so tried to give him a reprieve but it made him come across worse, however that wasn't the main premise of the book so I've tried not to let it bug me...more

This was fine, but I'd be lying if I said I was fully engaged and cared. I listened to the audiobook and if it weren't for using it as background noise while playing my switch etc. I'd probably have dnf'd as it just didn't grab me. I don't think it was anything bad, it was just one of those books that didn't work for me - maybe just the wrong time. I'm sure it will be loved by many...more

I picked up the audiobook and was surprised at the length, and I also went into it not knowing anything about it.
The beginning was quite slow and I couldn't really see where things were going, but then after Billy went to his Dad's it really picked up and did so again once the main crux of the story (the greys) got into it.
I thought this was done really well - it handled Billy's mum's paranoia, the strained relationship between Billy and his Dad and new step family. The new friendships. It's all just done so well and it feels like a really good foray into dystopia for kids. It was exactly what I needed right now....more

This had the exact sort of setting that I liked - Isolated. Somewhere like a boarding school, or a cruise ship, or a prison. This books absolutely would've rated higher if we'd got more exploration of the place. I never really felt like we were in the sanctuary and it felt to me like the author was just desperate to get to the climax of it all rather than give it time to build. You know in these sorts of stories that it won't be innocent, but I always enjoy that part of a dystopia where you can pretend it's a utopia and I just never really got that in this one....more

I didn't guess the big reveal (or at least the one I think was intended to shock the most) and my main theory for how the book would go was wrong and I love that. Maybe it is predictable and for whatever reason I just didn't clock it but either way - I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this!...more
