I'm very new to the sequential art game. The two that I have read have been finished or almost finished and have taken me at least a couple of days to read. So this was a very strange experience for me, especially given how excited I was for it.
content The story so far is pretty intriguing, though there's not much to it other than what is mentioned in the synopsis. Essentially, new amateur to the fencing world takes on a famous fencer in a regional competition. We get a little bit of a backstory, mostly through imagery/background art of the panels and it was all very well done. I'm definitely interested in knowing more about Nicholas' life. And of course, we get a little cliff hanger.
Also: how it possible to already feel sexual tension in such a short lil book? Pacat is a genius.
art It was absolutely gorgeous. I'm by no means a professional sequential art reader but this is definitely the best art I've read/looked at so far. The emotion on the faces was so nuanced, the panels very well thought out, and the use and nonuse of words to accompany panels was perfect (sometimes I find that too much or too little text can take away from the overall story).
I really do think you should all buy this... but maybe wait and buy it once the second one comes out as well? Might just be my sad, quick reading heart talking. But anyway, Pacat didn't disappoint.

i really didn't expect an auto- download graphic novel from netgalley to get me in my feelings but here we are.
it's a hundred pages of wild western goodness with a trans woman main character and a POC woman main character and it was just so fucking cute. no transphobia or homophobia AT ALL in here and the relationship that developed was just so damn cute.
i went in to this with no expectations which i think enhanced my enjoyment of this. it is VERY short so if you're looking for tons of character development or a slow burn romance you're going to be disappointed but if you're just looking for a f/f good time this is fantastic. HIGHLY recommend....more

i'd be interested to see where the series goes, but as it stands i'm not blown away with intrigue over the plot or characters.

eh... i'm not saying that comics/manga/graphic novels have to be sweet and happy for me to enjoy them. but this one seemed too bleak and depressing for my taste.
the main character is seeking sex as a form of emotional sanctuary and the the guy she chooses to do it with is not even COOL enough to be a dick. he's just lame and weird. i also found the art for the sex scenes... not sexy. which i think was the point but i did not like it. at all.
i did think the pages that were mostly scenery were pretty. a lot of this takes place by the ocean and those drawing were nice. ...more

this one is kind of hard to explain: but in a nutshell it's about this one room in an old house and how the space is used over time... before it was even a room, after it was a room, during it's use as a room.
and the visuals are laid over each other so the room itself could be the room from 1960 but with people from 1950 and 2020 and 1900 inside. the narrative itself is all over the place, honestly i wouldn't even call it a narrative. but most of the pages and scenes have something central tying them together. so like misunderstanding, or aging or whatever.
i didn't love the art style in this, it was a little bleak to me and the colors were not something that really grabbed me. likewise the execution was a little bit confusing given that so much was going on at one time.
but i was left feeling things and i think that was the point. puts into perspective how short the human lifespan is, how we all experience similar things in this life, etc. i probably don't stop thinking about this one for a long time.
i wouldn't necessarily purchase this for myself, but i'm really glad i picked it up from my library....more

because this was fantastic. it's a loose retelling of the greek myth of hades and persephone and it was just a complete delight. the art style and the vibe of the story reminded me a LOT OF studio ghibli/hayao miyazaki.
i personally find that a lot of standalone graphic novels feel incomplete and rushed but this was amazing start to finish. i loved the simplicity of the narrative and i liked the contrast in familial relationships that was presented. i don't want to be bold but i think this might be my favorite graphic novel that i've read this year.
i genuinely couldn't recommend this enough... and now i think i might need to own a copy....more

and a lot better than i expected. i'm not usually into graphic novels, mostly because they're too short for my liking and it's hard to get to know the characters. i usually prefer ongoing webcomics. but this was nice!
despite it being short and plot heavy i started seeing character development and some relationships forming. i was genuinely surprised at how much i liked the characters, i actually want to know more about all of them!
overall, a good choice for contemporary-a-thon and i'm interested to see what the next one is like....more

the story follows deja and some boring white guy as they try and have one last adventure at their final pumpkin patch seasonal shift (cause they're graduating). the plot was pretty predictable. deja was helping the dude chase down this girl he's always had a crush on but guess what happens.... exactly what you think is gonna happen.
i loved the setting and the artwork but the story is ultimately forgettable. ...more
