July 30. Finished The Guermantes Way, meaning I’m about halfway through. Alas the glue has given out for a considerable chunk of Chapter Two, so I have to check out of the library the single volumes of the Modern Library edition, essentially the same translation.

I started reading this book from the library and it's a wonderful look at a Paris that disappeared between the cracks. There are glimpses of it in literature--everyone from Zola to Modiano--but Sante thoroughly exhumes the darker aspects of the City of Light.
I decided this was one I had to have on my Besotted With Paris™ bookshelf and have been eagerly awaiting the paperback release. I don't often write proper reviews but if I win this giveaway, you betcha I'll write a review....more
