It started off so good but after a while ~100 pages in, it lost the pace and intrigue, hence it put me in a bit of a slump lol. I loved Fire, her slow growth and many layers that were slowly and subtly revealed, but the writing kind of took away the magic of it all.
Everything was super descriptive and not even in a lush or metaphor type of way (a la Laini Taylor, Tahereh Mafi, Roshani Chokshi) but there were point black descriptions of actions instead of showing those actions. Most of the time we spent with Fire's internal thoughts and scene descriptions (of who came and went) and Fire's slow and steady character growth.
There was also too little of graclings and the aftermath was very underwhelming, especially considering the so messed up but hella intriguing prologue. I also failed to make lasting connections with the characters which is why the book probably feels a little lackluster as well.
I can't remember what Graceling was like per se - the writing, what happened in detail etc. - but I do remember how it made me feel. I expected a great deal from the sophomore companion, but unfortunately it did not impress as much as I had hoped....more

dnf at 78 pages. on paper this was supposed to be a new favorite but not really feeling it tbh. i recognize this book has important stories to tell and i really appreciate that there are three different upbringings and circumstances showcased, social issues and topics tackled etc. but the characters themselves are not gripping my attention. also, maybe it's the language barrier but there were also two incestuous jokes :-/ just.. why
anyhow, it did make me crave to continue 'this is us' where i left off in 2017 which im pretty excited about :-) give me some feels yes thank u...more

however those fears did not come true because once i sat down to actually read a chunk of it, i was immersed and wanted to get to know each character and their backstory more; also, i am a sucker for the found family trope and morally gray characters, both which were present here; i saw some things coming but not all and those final chapters had me very excited to see what happens next for this bunch
also can we please talk about that cover and map because how do u do gorgeous, wow!!...more

Sophie's voice is so raw and painful that I could not connect with her grief just yet, hence I paused it for a while.
Some days ago I decided I would finish it before I leave back abroad. Truth be told, this was the right decision. While I could guess the mystery and most of the twists, I still highly enjoyed the novel and it definitely kept me guessing throughout. I was not strong enough to resist a bucket full of tears at the very end, a sign of how much Sophie and her story had grown on me.
It has been a few minutes since I finished the book and, while overly emotional and high key influenced by this state, I would very much recommend this book. It is not a happy story, but it is one worth reading and cherishing....more

I think this is a poignant coming of age novel and Ari's road to self-discovery was a very realistic and moving one; the questions he and Dante had about everything were natural, thought-provoking and very nicely presented to the reader through dialogue and inner conversations with oneself.
On the other hand, I was not a huge fan of the writing style at first, but it managed to grow on me some by the end of the book. Many have pointed out though that they were bewitched by the prose, so it was probably just my personal taste. I found that the writing style, for me personally, caused attachment issues and I often got confused who was speaking during lengthy dialogues with text within quotation marks and no "he said, she said" etc added to it all. This is also the reason for 3 stars, because I feel as though it prevented me from being super duper attached, though I did get teary eyed at the end and had a big smile plastered on my face when I closed the book.
I believe this novel to be a beautiful portrayal of a teenager's life and one's coming of age, but the writing style did not suit me personally. I am intrigued to see if the sequel (companion?) from Dante's POV would be different in this aspect, because he always spoke more than Ari and expressed himself a lot more through vocal words. Overall I would highly recommend this book though! ...more

Maybe it would have worked betterI read this as an audiobook, so it was quite hard to follow certain things and I didn't find myself invested enough. Maybe it would have worked better if I had seen the words in front of me? It was a decent book, but I was invested in some povs more than in others. Overall it was okay, though I personally do think the hype is a bit too much (and definitely overwhelming). I'd like to re-read it on paper / kindle sometime to see how my thoughts contradict themselves, so maybe stay tuned for part II of this review? lol...more
I'm not too keen on writing full reviews these days, so I'll possibly write a few more lines one day, but I'll leave you with this summary of thoughtsI'm not too keen on writing full reviews these days, so I'll possibly write a few more lines one day, but I'll leave you with this summary of thoughts:
- the romance is lit lit lit!!!!!! - perfect for hate to love trope lovers, especially those who are looking for diverse books written by diverse authors - note: I must say though that the hate was too brutal for me at times (the only one where the hate is this strong has been my fav ship ever which is Rose and Connor from the Addicted / Calloway Sisters series, but theirs is a different sort of dynamic, because Connor isn't the equally as spiteful and hateful towards Rose, and Rose uses a lot of hyperboles which she doesn't mean) - the story is super emo, poignant, thoughtful and beautifully written - side characters ftw - love the character growth and that characters admitted their mistakes and learned from them (though i did cry angry tears of major pain over jay at one point, he was truly a douche in certain situations, but he grows a lot; maria wasn't without fault though, they both made mistakes, but grew a lot as well) - you will cry 10/10 and smile a lot too - internet friendships / relationships are just as important as irl ones, especially if you don't find the security and happiness from people around you - if you're looking for lots of science, especially math stuff (as it is advertised by some readers), know that you won't find so much math here as physics..... which sadly is not my favorite of subjects lol - i'm a trash for family dynamics and you'll find these in the cyclone series, in case you're a fan as well
Overall would recommend to the max and cannot wait for the future installments of this series, because Courtney Milan is a powerhouse of a writer and I'm just captivated and simply in love with the cast of this series \(^-^)/
