Gelas pertama selembut kehidupan, gelas kedua sekuat cinta, gelas ketiga sepahit kehidupan.

Saman is a manifestation of freedom ; from repression, of the soul, of sexuality, of faith, and of literature, especially remembering the time setting of Orde Baru-Reformasi. I feel like this book presents deep meaning with storytelling-like narration-which supposedly makes it easier for the reader to swallow the deepness-but unfortunatelly doesn't meet me wholly.
This is a story of Saman. Athanasius Wissangeni, which later will be called Saman, was a complex and humane character : full of contradiction and love. I adore the character development, and how he pour his love to his surroundings. The author managed to portray his faith's ebb and flow through bad events that happened around his life. I believe, to have faith is to fall and to rise up, and to fall again to finally rise up.
This is a story of sexuality. The author used female characters to bust sexuality closure, especially in women. One of my favorite character, Shakuntala, celebrate her sexuality freelly and beautifully, just like dancing.
This is a story of freedom of speech through literature. I can see that this book is the authors thoughts' concrete realization, which at the time this book was published cannot be said carelessly. Handsome, but also gripping and full with bitterness.
But then, again. The time setting, the restless feeling, and grey aura that the author managed to bring squeezed the life out of me and makes it harder for me to read. This book concentrated heavily on the characters, which at the same time means that this book has no real, clear, plot. This book did not amuse me. Oftenly, I don't feel anything. I might not going to read this twice.
And at the same time I can say that this book deserves all the appreciation in the world.

Buat saya, tulisannya bernyawa.
Saya butuh puisi-puisi karya Sapardi Djoko Damono lainnya.
