I listened to it once on audio and could retain zero from the very short book... And had to reread it a couple of months later (now) to say that I actually read it and know what it's about. It's a 3-star because of the icks and the weird dynamics.
Now I will tell you why it's a 3-star book. It's because for a 1988 book, damn that's good writing, I did not even notice that the book was this old. And for a book with this little reference to the current world, i still feel like it's relevant. And the mundaneity spoke to me and I relate to it, kind of like an outdated, slightly more weird Convenience Store Woman but I know if anything The latter took inspiration from the former.
So a very mild 2.5 stars rounded up to 3, not sure if i'll pick any more Yoshimoto books, but maybe if I have nothing else to read and really in the mood of a mundane book.

I loved the anticipation between lowe and misery and i know that so many reviews are saying that Misery has basically zero personality or thoughts I felt that I could relate to her, because sometimes shit just isn't in your control, and while so many people think that you can't think for yourself maybe you are.
On another note, it feels like the whole book tried so hard to not be about them being together but my personal focus was on that lol. But i'm not complaining.
Not sure what else to say, I think when I enjoy such a book so much I always have very little to say about it because I want it to stay in my head protected from people's opinions lol.

I wont lie and say that i remember everything that happens, which I was also thinking that if Emily is referring to characters from previous books then its definitley going over my head. But i liked the little "X days until i can leave" references and the kind of forced proximity, even though i don't think it really is. The bookshop thing is getting kind of old, but its nice that she tries to bring new aspects of it. I think the emphasis on how broke and struggling she is was not super nice, it just rubbed me off the wrong way.

The author/writing was not snobby or obnoxious in any way and the content while simple held a lot of value. I do agree though that it can be a bit shorter than it is (already is short but..).

I just can't. the truth is that she has a damn good formula and sometimes I just love the simplicity of the world, the characters are set up so well, and we know who our MCs are, it's just a safe space where I can get immersed. I know the not having enough romance, or I guess spice, wasn't what people wanted, but honestly, I didn't mind the subtly. And as someone who has a mild interest in chess because of their partner, it's safe to say I enjoyed this book haha. HOW DOES NOLAN MANAGE TO BE SO COOL YET SO NICE IDK! You know at some point Mallory really was so obnoxious both with family and friends and then it was literally like resolved in a couple of pages? That was a bit meh but again the type of things I justify for 18 year old ya's in their clown prime, just trying to figure everything out.
Honestly after Bride's release, I'm a bit worried that I'm losing Hazelwood to romantasy, like idc give me 7 stem romances with different MC names just don't start writing 600-page novels with fantasy world-building and whatnot. But maybe I'll just start liking romantic who knows...

I'm just a sucker for a good plot and while I wanted to like this I can't say that it was memorable.

Up until the last quarter of the book I genuinely thought that there was zero romance and that the girl was gonna be brokenhearted / end up alone. I also don't understand what otherwise this book is about...London? Okay... Maybe that's the only thing that kept me from dnfing because I haven't been to that part of England before... but otherwise yea idk, even the house ownership thing just felt too unrealistic, like yes I would love someone to buy me a house under their name lol but it's hard to make that believable. The self-loathing and whole career trajectory was also very cringeworthy and not as Grinch Esq as it was supposed to look i guess? El is just insufferable by the end to be frank and so is Ray. Maybe as someone who is so fucking obsessed with the mundane and with reading books and watching videos and series of just super mundane stories and people doing nothing or just living their lives my standards were quite high and this book just didn't do it for me? Anyways, this book really made me want to read a nice cozy fiction or like even something with good magic or whimsy because of family lore?
