Loved the relationship dynamics this time around and how the gap between the generations, based on different experiences in the youth of the parents can create distance and misunderstanding. This dynamic was very well illustrated. So much of the story is revealed in the art and in the personality’s of the parents who I loved.
I loved this!! Not as complicated as the Monstress series which definitely adds to the enjoyment. Accessible but still a layered story with the complexities and dynamics of family. Ipo, the mother, is a total badass and I absolutely loved her. Having grown up with a tough, critical mother, and appreciating what that does to one’s psyche, Ipo could give lessons to my mother. She definitely was next league and probably not going to be winning any mother of the year awards. Still loved her character! I liked how The Nighteaters explored this while telling a story set in a truly creepy, next level haunted house. Excited to read the next instalment this fall....more

Those are the books that gave me tools in which to recognize and alter my understanding of myself and deepen my practice of mindfully being present, in the moment, with myself and with others. This and the author’s book, The Mandala of Being have brought a noticeable shift to my emotional well being and I will be forever grateful. To get the most of this book, it would be helpful to have an understanding of mindfulness and the importance of presence and being wholly present In the present moment. I believe, having read the Mandala of Being first definitely contributed to understanding the concepts the author covered and with that as a foundation of his teachings, I found this book spoke directly to the issues that have been an ongoing block to self understanding and healing. It has also brought a new depth and joy to my meditation practice as I had unknowingly been suppressing the joy I would experience because of fear. For that understanding and shift alone, I would be forever grateful, but the teachings about ego have been absolute game changers in terms of recognizing how it’s impacting my life in ways that ultimately cause suffering. Absolutely would recommend to those who have an understanding and some practice of mindfulness and meditation....more

I found the characters lacking depth and believability. I thought the female captain was treated in a way that a male captain would not have been and Cavalon read like a seventeen year old boy rather than a twenty seven year old man. It also stretched plausibility for me that these hugely significant tasks would be required of someone who was so inexperienced but who could manage to know how to do everything. To be fair, I have recently finished the Expanse series and War and Peace which were amazing reading experiences for me and it’s hard for books like this to measure up, even a little. Not that this book is trying to, but those books have spoiled me for anything not excellent. ...more

The pacing, the characters and plot were pitch perfect for me. I found the deeper questions thought provoking as Rex wrestles with what is good and bad and what agency he has. What makes him good or bad? On the surface, this appears a simple straightforward question but as the story progresses, that question and the possible answers becomes more complex as Rex finds himself having to decide whether he is a creature of agency, or a creature who’s choices are made by those who master him. I really enjoyed Rex and the other biotech creatures and I think Tchaikovsky shines as an author when he’s writing from the perspective of animals and other sentient nonhuman beings. Also, I appreciated that this page total came in under 400 pages which made for a quick read. All in all, I really enjoyed this and I’m glad I picked it up after finishing The Final Architecture trilogy so that I finished with Tchaikovsky on a high note. ...more
