There may have been too many of them and not enough time for each to get any depth. It may have been that the dialogue had too much slang and was not as clever as I usually expect from Ms. Roberts. Possibly it was the length of time that passes as the book has four parts. Mostly, Cate just didn't appeal, and Dillon seemed a bit young in the way he reacts to her. Maybe on a second reading I will get more from this one....more

It is an eye-opener, for sure. Lansing struck a false note, however, in that he seemed to come out of nowhere with insufficient data as to why and what little is there makes no sense really. Also, Eve's final interview with the killer left something to be desired, since the killer rolled over way too quickly, given the killer's lack of emotional depth. I was really hoping the cohab was not involved, too. Too bad....more

I was afraid it would end too fast, but Ms. Roberts did a fine job of making it last and leaving the reader with hope and relief and satisfaction all around. Her imagery, as usual, is top notch, so you feel as if you are there, right beside Breen, as she works her way through both worlds. I would have liked to see Sally and Derrick's reactions to their visit to Talamh, but I'm thinking Ms. Roberts ended it in the exact right place....more

Evil comes more than once to assault the Fey and is beaten back while Breen grows stronger and stronger. I like that the book doesn't leave you with a cliff-hanger and still makes you want to move on to the next book in the series as fast as possible. ...more

Once again, we are treated to witches, but this time elves, fairies, and weres (as in werewolf only changing into other animals as well). There is also the dark. Breen has spent her childhood in Philadelphia, never knowing she is also Talamhish from another world that exists beside the human world. In this book she "awakens" to her other heritage and learns to deal with it. The reader learns right along with her. ...more

The first murder is someone the reader could really like, and it just didn't seem right that he should be out of the book so soon. I did feel the way the couple behaved to each other was almost sickeningly over-the-top. The person I selected as the one I wanted to be the murderer seemed like a shoo-in most of the way through the book, although it took Eve too long to figure that part out. In the end we were both wrong. Once Eve was on the right track, it seemed to zip to the end way too fast. Mostly I missed Mavis in this one. She would have had a great time taking the actors that Eve had to deal with down a notch or two....more

For once, I wished Ms. Roberts didn't have such a visual way with words. As the book progressed, the horror continued until I felt totally wrung out by the end. Fantastic writing? Yes. What I want to read? Not so much. It took days to get over. It is on my re-read shelf, but I'm not sure I have the strength to read it again. We'll see....more

Plus, I am usually outraged when people who in no way deserve it get murdered, which is definitely the case here. On the other hand, hey, it's Eve and Roarke and Peabody and McNab and Morris, even Mr. Mira, so what could be bad? I will probably appreciate it more on a second reading. These books get devoured so fast on a first reading that I may not have taken the time to really plumb the depths. There were several of Eve's trademark questions about some colloquialism that she or someone else uses that were delightful. I love trying to follow her reasoning. It will make your head spin. Oct. 8, 2022: Just completed a second reading. This time I was horrified that total jerks would take the lives of people who are truly loved and appreciated by their families and friends and worth so much more than the murderer was. I spent most of the book worried that Eve and Peabody would miss warning someone who they hadn't considered as being threatened, like Flint. It was a difficult book in many ways with its moments of humor to lighten the way. I was ready to do a happy dance myself when the murdered was taken down....more

Still,I loved the premise for the murders in this one, although one could easily see it going awry easily, which it did by the fourth planned murder. Still, Lady Justice! What a concept! The supporting characters continue to please and I look forward to Bella and Somerset and Mavis every time and miss some of the others who don't get much of a look-in, if at all. My one pout about this one is that you are told who the killer is far too soon. It removed a little of the suspense and I kept thinking it was a ruse and it would be someone else entirely. Make that hoping it was someone else entirely. Still . . . a great addition to the Eve Dallas saga. And, for once, I felt the murdered deserved it, although I could see Eve's side of things there....more

Even the excuse of stealing from those who can afford it or deserve it didn't persuade me. It is still a hurtful, and let's face it, a destructive thing to have happen to anyone. The action takes place over a period of twenty years in three parts. It is difficult to watch the process of aging, although Ms. Roberts does a great job of describing a man succombing to Alsheimer's. I guess that reading about twenty years passing that fast is just scarey. The main part of the story is great and you can see the different magic events as the writing is very visual. ...more

That lurking worry kept my attention thoroughly on everything in the book, trying to interpret actions in more than one possible way, so I was pretty much wrung out by the end. On the other hand it is full of "Eve-isms" and her thoughts on clothes, parties, make-up, shoes so that the reader can chuckle and lighten the load at various points. I can always count on being entertained by one of Ms. Robb's books, and there is a bonus in having Crack involved in this one....more

Eve is once again presented with a situation in which she has to think about the very nature of justice versus the law and make a decision that goes against the grain in many ways, but when one gets right down to it, it is the only decision she could make to serve justice, if not the law. It really comes across once more what a complex woman she is....more

I'm sure Ms. Roberts could have come up with a good one and I almost wish she had, since I will be worrying this to death in the coming days. I was heartsick over the needless destruction of lives but happy to see many old friends as Nadine is up for an Oscar and so many were there to watch the results. I reInteresting villain and crimes, based on published books, which gave Eve and Peabody hints about future crimes so that they could issue warnings. I really hope DeLano's ex-husband's son gets his comeuppance in some future book. It did raise the issue of whether it's too late to save a 9-year-old from his upbringing if the mother just had the courage to walk out. He sounded a bit too indoctrinated to me, but I'd like to think he might turn around given the right circumstances. My favorite scene in the book is the big dog at the vet's and Galahad's reaction when Eve gets home. Ms. Roberts continues to bring up interesting colloquialisms so that Eve can pick them apart and wonder where they come from. Dog in the manger? Got me.
The twin aspects of fiction versus reality written in fiction is fascinating. I have never thought about the emails and mail writers must get. I noticed my own leanings and wishes that I have mentioned in previous reviews standing out in those emails that were shared. After reading more than fifty of these books, I have noticed that one of my pet peeves, i.e., loose ends or even just a character or characters that I wonder what happened to next when the book ends, are often tied up or mentioned in the next book of the series, so reading them in order again mostly seems to solve that problem for me. There is no question that Ms. Roberts has a convoluted way of thinking and writing that I enjoy immensely....more

Still a fairy tale, but the third book hooks you into the characters of Moira and Cian. Although I questioned the logic in several places, I was willing to go along. The ending is fantastic, and makes up for the lapse in logic several times over. I also like the pity that the good guys could feel for the bad guys, whether they deserve it or not, but sometimes I wanted to shake a few of the characters for being taken in and not following orders. ...more

Half of the book takes place in Ireland and the other in Geall, Larkin's home. The action stays fast-paced and interesting, whether you find vampires and magic a fun story line or not, which mostly I don't, so take that into account when you look at my rating for this book.
