There are so many decisions to make, it can be overwhelming. The author walks the reader through the pros and cons of various styles, and shares what has brought them success in their farming journey. Our purpose and motivation for gardening and farming is important, and will determine the choices we make and prevent burnout. I read the book from beginning to end, but it is definitely one that I will go back to and use as a reference as I establish my own mini-farm for our family.

It delved into the technical, which doesn't make for engaging reading but will set the reader/gardener up for success. Living in a semi-arid/Mediterranean climate, it was gratifying to learn about plants and landscape ideas that would apply to the unique challenges of our area. I definitely feel more prepared as I plan our yard and meet the purposes of each area. I would have liked a more comprehensive plant guide as well as which are native to my area, but this book gave me a strong foundation and start to the process.

I appreciated the introduction of getting off to the best start possible with good habits and preventative measures of location, timing, spacing, support, watering, and feeding your soil. The troubleshooting section addressed common issues such as weather and bugs. I appreciated the organic and sensible strategies to combat these problems. The book covers diseases common to each vegetable with a quick reference table, and then disease profiles with further information, what to look for, and possible solutions. I'm looking forward to planning my own garden and am glad to have this helpful book to turn to.

It only took about an hour to make my way through the author's delightful narrative and peruse the forty plants she selected to spotlight. Because she focused on a smaller number I was able to get a good feel for the plants and which would work in my landscape. Because I live in a climate that often has drought conditions, not many of the specimens featured would be ideal, but I enjoyed learning about the variety she presented and the lovely photographs.

The more I read about native plants and supportI'm currently planning the landscaping for both my front and back yards, and it is a bit overwhelming! The more I read about native plants and supporting the bees, birds, and butterflies, the more a meadow-type landscape appeals to me. I appreciated the foundation this book gave me and the things I learned that I need to consider. The author addresses the benefits of meadow-scaping, finding inspiration, and the planning, designing, preparing, planting, and maintaining of meadows small to large. The natural and native look is beautiful, and I enjoyed perusing the lists of suggested plants, divided by category: mid-height dry sun plants, tall dry sun plants, mesic to wet sun plants, grasses, annuals, edible plants, part-shade plants, groundcovers, bulbs and bulb-like plants. I'm more excited to get my soil prepared and design my yard after reading this book, and plan to refer back to it as a reference.

It offers so much advice, from basic tips to technical and scientific information that explain the why's. It's obvious the author is an expert and passionate about helping plant owners be successful with their indoor flowering plants. The first part of the book, about 50 pages are on caring for the plants, and then over 100 pages on individual flowering houseplants with a description and details on light, watering, flowers, propagation, and toxicity. There is also a chart of indoor plant pests and their control, resources, and an index that includes both common and scientific names. This is an amazing resource that I highly recommend to plant lovers!

The illustrations are simple yet fill each page with beauty and the joy of the season. The information is basic, yet includes facts and details that many adults may not know. I enjoyed the learning and the fun ideas that are perfect to do alongside children. From plants and produce to animals and insects, many aspects of the winter season in nature is explored. Like the others I would have liked more content, and I hope that the publisher will release all four books combined together in a collection!

It's a wonderful resource, and the most helpful part to me was the beginning with guidance on planning and designing. I also learned from the introduction which explained the various types of ground cover and what makes them different from each other. I was completely overwhelmed by the vast amount of plants to learn about, but there are 17 sidebars with lists of plants suggested for various conditions and categories, such as edible, trailing, tight spaces, lawn replacement, deer-resistant, fragrant, and the various soil and light conditions. I found it to be a good place to start, and was able to look up the plants by name rather than try to read through the plant listings beginning to end.

I love the sweet illustrations and information that is at an introductory level for the younger crowd. We learn about apples and pears, pumpkins and gourds, mushrooms and herbs. There are simple activities and crafts that focus on using the produce and nature of the season in a variety of ways. I only wish that the book was longer! It would be wonderful if the publisher combined all four books into one. The book size is large and I enjoy the feel of the matte cover and pages.
