I based this book of the title alone thinking I was going to maybe get some tips to fix some of my behavior or just letting things go and giving slack to people I care about helping me with an event I care about. (like, no one will as invested in your wedding as you...ya know), things going as planned or not as planned... You know. I feel so superficial now thinking this, little did I know that this book will change my life. I've changed my outlook - I can't explain it but It feels like this book was made for me at this time. I've been trying to change things about myself but I'm approaching it to like obliterated instead of learning to manage and use it to my advantage. This idea was really striking to me. Learning that joy is not conditional, and there was a segment about suicide. The suicide chapter was what I needed.
"I'll never get what I want - I'll lose what I have" was my biggest revelation. Living in this state of constant fear and depression is what has lead me to really powerful suicidal thoughts since like 2022 - I've told my partner this year about them when I started to plan. I never could put into words my dread - but this is it. It's this circle of "I'll never get what I want - I'll lose what I have" is basically my drive.
This book has changed me. Excellent read - embrace your perfectionism instead of tearing yourself to pieces. ...more

Pretty great story that kept me hooked enough. ~Ashley

When I found out Kate was going to be one of the few women working on the oil fields, I was scared for her for several reasons but I was mostly scared for her about the working environment dominated by men. I never expected the experience, the story, the empathy, and how she managed to still keep her sense of humor still after it all. I was surprised that this story is much deeper than surface level...to see how she was treated, to see how her co-workers who were women treated her (and you know they were facing similar things), her age, how it felt to be treated as worthless, how life in the camps drained away their humanity & decency, despite being free from the camp that society didn't even really change, the working culture with other factories being shutdown and men having to switch careers because this life is all they know, corporate greed, fighting to get out of debt, and the suffering of First Nation people and their land and quality of life being destroyed by the oil sands. There is a lot to unpack here and I hope to read it again to pick up on the nuance I've missed.
There is not a page wasted. The illustrations have extreme can put into them...black/white was a powerful choice and there are images of beauty which can't even ever been seen because all it is ...is the oil sands. It ruins it. It still has a moment to breath but the feeling overtakes you when you see how ugly it is.
You feel it all in this graphic novel - the story it tells is not just Kate's alone but what the oil sands was to many people. ...more

I've borrowed this from the library and there is always another hold for this item and I see why. I think it's important to record this bizarre 2020 events and how it has impacted several people and this is of especially for me because it is locally.
I almost never got to process the events of 2020 (the stress and trauma events for me) but reading things like this and Amanda Gorman's Call Us What We Carry help me place these events and settle things a bit better.

This is a history, not history, book. You know the history, but here is the background you never got and sometimes never even heard of. I usually speed up my audiobooks a bit, not this one. I wanted to hear and absorb everything I could. This is a re-read for sure.
I recommend this to everyone. It's about 4 hours on audio and the tone will grab you immediately. This is suitable for pretty much everyone. I would say older Juv thru Adult, so I hope to see this book in classes. (whenever those happen). I've seen Jason Reynold's books go out frequently so i'm confident that these will get into the hands of young readers.

Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts. and it is an excellent read as preparation to get the most out of this book. In Dare to Lead, that book talks about discomfort and teaches you that these are the most important learning tools. In White Fragility, if you're white you probably will feel uncomfortable or awkward because Robin is also white...so she can accurately pinpoint situations & thoughts that you may have, previously had, or know other people who have. Continue forward and be open to learn.

The book provides great advice with applicable stories and techniques. I think one day i'll re-read this to get a better handle on the specifics. For a first time read it's changed my perspective on how I view difficult people and approaches.
I took it down the stars because at times during the book you can hear the white male privilege ooze out. Still, doesn't last long and ultimately the value of the rest of the book was worth it. -UPDATE- It's a combination of white male police privilege, i'm able to place it now! So when these phrases or parts leak out it makes him sound really insincere. I'd still say this is worth the read because it does provide valuable insight on deescalation, just a heads up.
The audiobook narrator I think was a perfect fit for this book. Nicely read....more
