Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to have sex with E.M. Forster? If so, then this is the book for you!
"Arctic Summer" is admittedly a competent and occasionally compelling novel about the author of "A Passage to India" during the twelve years of his life that he worked on the book. It was his last and undoubtedly best novel. I do recommend "A Passage to India" whole-heartedly.
As a novel about the writing of a novel, "Arctic Summer" is pretty okay. It's not helped by the prosaic nature of Forster's life. Yes, he did have a significant friendship during these years with an Indian intellectual and physical and intermittently romantic relationship with an Egyptian tram conductor who he met in Alexandria. The novel also "covers" a friendship with the great Greek poet Cavafy that Forster had. I just don't think that Galgut goes any deeper or more profound than Forster's excellent biographer P.N. Furbank in helping to illuminate the sources of Forster's creativity.
