REREAD rounding up to 5. I love it as a paperback, and on audio. MZ is a goddess.
4,5 stars but I will keep it on 4 on Goodreads. I just can't give it the full 5 since it felt sooooo long. There were so many wonderful moments throughout the novel, but it was just way too long. 16 hours on audio, 600+ pages on paper. It felt just a tad excessive. I think they could have easily taken out a 100 pages, because a lot of it wasn't THAT interesting or important.
I did enjoy how it was a slow burn romance from acquaintance to friendship to love. Yes, gasp, shock, horror, but I liked it. However, I did not like that the first steamy kiss was on hour 15 out of 16. Come on now. The steamy bits were steamy, however. I wish there were more of them, and yes, I realise it makes me sound pervy. Such is life, and so on.
Would recommend this to everyone. It's funny and cute and romantic. Extremely sweet. I love Ms Zapata's sense of humour. She is just a bit formulaic (there're a lot of similarities between books), but if it works for her, then I guess that's fine. I've said before how romance has to follow a set of rules anyway, but her novels employ a lot of the same tropes, and I think she's well capable of expanding her repertoire.
The length of the novel is why I deducted that half-star actually. Tehnically, it worked, but I just had points were the length was in the foreground of my mind, and it really bothered me. Shortening it just a teensy bit would have improved the book.
Anyway, despite this small flaw, I enjoyed the novel immensely. The characters are cool, and I grew to like and love them. Would recommend both this novel and the author herself. I prefer this one to Under Locke, however, but the author is already an auto-buy/borrow for me. Definitely give her a go.
I listened to this on audio and Callie Dalton is great. I really enjoy her narration. She does a great male voice; her Spanish pronunciation sounded a bit weird, but it's better in the Kulti audiobook. I will pick up other Mariana Zapata books on audio, as well, just because CD narrates them.
