🐚 You are not the world, but you are everything that makes the world good. Without you, my life would still exist, but that's all it would manage to do. 🐚

Ahh, I love this book so much!! This entire series is absolutely ✨magical✨ I read most of this alone in my room, curled up in my saucer chair with my headphones on, so to say I was in my feels would be an understatement. These are my comfort books, so I will probably end up reading them once a year for the rest of my life lol. If you haven't read this series, PLEASE DO.

🌼Plot/World-Building🌼
Okay, so obviously this is a series, so the plot isn't just based on what has happened in this book alone. I think Kiera did a great job mentioning little details of the other books in this one. You would think America changing her mind about a million times would get boring, but I think I got more and more emotional every time. The world-building was pretty good. I think the caste system throughout this series was an interesting idea.

🩰Characters🩰
🩷 America: America, you are full of nothing but bad ideas. Great intentions but awful ideas.
This girl cannot make up her mind, but it's so sad because I feel like if I were in her position I couldn't either. I love America so much. She will fight for what she wants and protects those she cares about. She's not about to take crap from anyone *cough* King Clarkson *cough* and she's so passionate. (view spoiler)

🩷 Maxon: I want everything with you, America. I want the holidays and the birthdays, the busy season and lazy weekends. I want peanut butter fingertips on my desk. I want inside jokes and fights and everything. I want a life with you.
My poor baby Maxon needs a hug. He is cornered by almost everyone in his life trying to tell him what to do. Idk how my boy didn't snap from the pressure. Also, Maxon has the definition of "daddy issues." But even on top of everything that is wrong with his life, there is a shining light that is America. These two aren't perfect, but I think that's what makes their relationship even better. Maxon is so sacrificial and sweet and the definition of a cinnamon roll 😊 When I think of him, I think of a tall blonde with a football build and impeccable abs, so basically ✨perfection✨

🩷 Aspen: I’m just realizing, Mer, that no matter what happens . . . there will always be a string tying you to me. I’ll never not worry about you. I’ll never not care about what you do. You’ll always be something to me.
I think knowing how this ended because I've read it before really helped me see how Aspen just kind of... (view spoiler) I just liked Aspen overall. I know a lot of people, like, hate him or something, but I really don't think he's a bad guy. I don't think he was right for America, they both needed to be with other people, but he was protective and kind, so I don't get why y'all want to practice knife-throwing with him 😊

🩷 Marlee: I'm always here for you, America. You know that.
Marlee is bestie goals. I love her so much, probably more than any of the other characters. Marlee isn't in this book much, but when she is, all she is is kind, loyal, brave, and an awesome friend. For some reason I always imagine Marlee as this tall brunette, but she's actually blonde, so idk. There is no dumb blonde in this girl though. I feel like, if you don't love Marlee, your brain must be injured, but maybe that's just me 😊

🩷 Shalom: I love you beyond paint, beyond melodies, beyond words. And I hope you will always feel that, even when I'm not around to tell you so.
Shalom is America's dad, and wow, a lot happens with him in this book. Okay, this man seems like the best dad ever. He always tells America how proud he is of her, how much he loves her, and how she can do anything she puts her mind to. Also, this man should be an author. He's an incredible writer 😢 (iykyk). (view spoiler)

🩷 The Elite Girls: And there we were, in the background of it all, holding on to one another. The Perfectionist, the Sweetheart, the Diva . . . and me.
One of my favorite things about these books is seeing the evolution of the Selection girls into the Elite girls, and the Elite girls into BESTIES. SO much happened with these girls. It really annoyed me when they decided they had to check scores with one another and were pressing America for information, so I understand why Maxon was upset about that. Celeste was easily my favorite out of these girls. Kriss was so perfect it was annoying, and the fact that (view spoiler) Although Celeste may seem stuck up, Kriss is the one who really looks down on everyone. If you can't tell, I don't like her. Elise was just... there. She made me kind of sad with the whole "I want to marry Maxon to fulfill my duties, love can come later" thing. She seemed sad most of the time, but I didn't dislike her. She was nice to America and made a good character, I just wish we had seen a little more into her life and had some more character development. Celeste was the bomb. She's infuriating, but in a good way. I like that we got to see her being vulnerable, and her friendship with America and the girls was awesome. I love how she started rooting for America to win after she knew Maxon didn't really want her. (view spoiler)

💀 Kota: I hated Kota. He was a stupid, unnecessarily rude, ungrateful, lazy, greedy, arrogant, impulsive, jealous, selfish, cowardly, impatient, disrespectful DIRTBAG. He wasn't a big character in this book, but I needed to rant sometime during this review. Kota doesn't deserve a heart next to his name or a quote, because everything he said was stupid and unnecessary. He had a caring, loveable, gracious father who loved him and he COMPLETELY DISRESPECTED HIM. Kota can go die in that craphole studio of his. I'm done ranting now, thanks for listening 😊

🪞My Fav Quotes🪞
🌷 Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyway.
🌷 The best people all have some kind of scar.
🌷 America, my love, you are sunlight falling through trees. You are laughter that breaks through sadness. You are the breeze on a too-warm day. You are clarity in the midst of confusion.
🌷 I'll love you until my very last breath. Every beat of my heart is yours. I don't want to die without you knowing that.
🌷 In those seconds, I was mourning everything I'd lost. How I'd never get to see you walk down an aisle toward me, how I'd never get to see your face in our children, how I'd never get to see streaks of silver in your hair. But, at the same time, I couldn't be bothered. If me dying meant you living, how could that be anything but good?
🌷 “Your eyes look like chocolate,” I mumbled. He smiled. “And yours look like the morning sky.”
🌷 “Do you need me to break her leg? I could make it happen.” She chuckled to herself. “I’m kidding.”

“I took a steadying breath. “Listen, I know we have a full night ahead of us, but I wanted to give you your birthday present.”

“Oh, darling, you didn’t need to get me anything. Every day with you is a gift.” He leaned in and kissed me.

“Well, I hadn’t planned on getting you a gift, but then something presented itself, so here we are.”

“All right then,” he said, placing his glass on the ground. “I’m ready. Where is it?”

“That’s the only problem,” I started. I felt my hands begin to shake. “It won’t actually arrive for another seven or eight months.”

He smiled but squinted. “Eight months? What in the world could take . . .”

As his words drifted away, so did his eyes, leaving my face and making their way to my stomach. He seemed to expect me to look different, for me to be as big as a house already. But I’d done my best to hide everything: the tiredness, the nausea, the sudden distaste for foods.

He stared on and on, and I waited for him to smile or laugh or jump up and down. But he sat there, frozen to the point that it started to frighten me.

“Maxon?” I reached out and touched his leg. “Maxon, are you all right?”

He nodded, still watching my stomach.”
