it was amazing

I absolutely loved this book! Estes's writing transported me to a well-constructed fantasy world, complete with dragons, powers, fantastical creatures, chosen ones, prophecies, reluctant heroes, political intrigue and more.

In this world, some people are born with a kind of birthmark that grants them unique powers. But not everybody uses their power for good. Get ready to set out on a journey filled with twists and turns, and tons of people who you're cheering for (and against), all while knowing your favorites have the unfortunate problem of having been born into different sides of a brewing conflict.

The story itself follows multiple, fully realized POVs, with each character having a distinct narrative flavor and believable motivations (my two favorites were Roan and Annise). The pacing was spot on, with plenty of action to drip out the worldbuilding without being overwhelming. And of course, it contains some absolutely endearing moments where I couldn't stop smiling at the pages, and suspenseful bits where my lips hurt from how hard I was chewing them.

Definitely a gripping story that had me invested the whole read. 10/10 for this page-turner.
