Each book in this series has delivered a dose of angst and emotional heartache at some point. This book gave it to me in layers as each characters' past is slowly revealed. Breanna’s layers began in the previous book Citadel. I admit, I was a bit apprehensive going into this one. However, Ms. Kent exposed the dark part of Breanna's life in a manner that pulled me into her story and gripped my heart.





While we are not given Aiden's point of view, there were enough hints along the way to guess where his heart and mind were. Of course, there were also those times that I found myself questioning his motivations. His gentle care of Breanna when she needed it won me over big time.





This is filled with a lot of action, some serious danger and drama, as well as moments that had me tearing up. It's also laced with the perfect amount of steam, written in a way that had me moving Aiden to the top of my recent favorite hero list.

Most of the books in the Kindled series can be effectively read as standalones, but Sanctuary is a book best read after the previous one. You’ll lose a lot of the emotional power if you jump into it out of context. While you certainly don’t need to start from the beginning of the series, I recommend you at least read Citadel before reading this one. Sanctuary also features main characters with the most traumatic backgrounds in the series. Both Breanna and Aidan have gone through a lot. Last Light and the Kindled series have always included violence, death, and sexual assault as part of the backdrop of the post-apocalyptic world, but this book hits harder on those themes. Breanna was repeatedly sexually abused in the past. While those acts are explained as backstory, there is no on-page sexual assault in this book. Aidan’s family history is violent and traumatic—again, only explained after the fact and not shown on page. If you’ve already read Citadel, then Breanna’s history won’t be a surprise, but Aidan’s might be, and I thought I’d give an early warning about the book as a whole in case you’d prefer to avoid these themes.
